1 Ostropol – a brief Jewish history Neville Lamdan © 1793 Map showing Ostropol and Stara Konstantinov The town of Ostropol, in the region of Volhynia, is said to have been founded in 1576 by a Ruthenian (Ukrainian) prince, Constantine Basil Ostrog (1526 1608).i However, the name of the place, sounding like “Austro-pol(is)” [Austro-city], may suggest that it was established earlier by “Austrians”, coming from nearby Galicia (“ear-marked” in green on the map) or further to the west. Be that as it may, Prince Constantine Ostrog was one of the most powerful men of his day in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. At the height of his career, he served as the (military) Marshal of Volhynia and Voivode (civil governor) of the important Kiev Voivodship. He owned vast lands throughout the area, allegedly comprising some 100 towns and 1,300 villages.2 In the 1560’s, he built an impressive castle, around which the town of Stara Konstantinov, bearing his name, grew. He certainly had it in his power to develop Ostropol, on the Sluch River, a decade later. Prince Constantine Basil Ostrog - putative founder of Ostropol In view of its strategic location, Ostropol was frequently the target of marauding Tatar and Cossak bands, requiring it to develop its own defensives. By 1619, the town was fortified and 23 villages lay in its domain. In 1648, it found itself in the midst of the upheavals instigated by Cossacks, ostensibly trying to wrest their independence from the Poles. In June 1849, a Polish general succeeded in driving sizeable Cossack bands out of the towns of Kryvonosenka, Krasilov and Stara Konstantinov and bottling them up in the castle at Ostropol, where they put up fierce resistance. -

The Way to the Tree of Life Jewish practice entails fulfilling many laws. Our diet is limited, our days to work are defined, and every aspect of life has governing directives. However, in the Torah, our great teacher Moshe, Moses, declared that perfect fulfillment of all religious law is very near and easy for each of us. The Zohar explains that the different ways words are arranged according to the aleph -bais symbolize the different aspects of divine providence. A series of words sometimes appears in alphabetical order, the first starting with an aleph , the second with a bais , and so forth. This arrangement symbolizes divine mercy. Sometimes, a series will appear in reverse alphabetical order, called tashrak , the first starting with a tav , the second with a shin , and so forth. This symbolizes strict justice. There is a dispute in the Gemora (Rosh HaShana 10b) regarding when the future Redemption will take place. One opinion is that it will take place in Nissan . The other is that it will take place in Tishrei . According to the Zohar , we can say that the question is whether the Jewish people will be redeemed because they will have earned it or whether the Redemption will be une arned, an act of divine mercy. -

141 Are Converts to Judaism Required to Immerse Their Utensils after Conversion? By: MICHAEL J. BROYDE Introduction One of the unique features of modern life in America is the ease with which secular culture and population accepts conversions to a different faith. Unlike other times and places, modern America allows one to change one’s faith without any major social consequences, never mind the violence that was common in Eastern Europe just a few centuries ago if a person’s conversion did not find favor with the local population. Because of America’s increasing acceptance and tolerance of different religions and lifestyles, conversion to Judaism has become much more common, resulting in a larger number of converts nowadays within the Orthodox community than in eras past. This pattern has given rise to a renewed focus on hilchos geirim, the halachic issues relating to the status of a convert after conversion. There are essentially six areas of Halachah (Jewish Law) where the rules for a convert might differ from those who were born Jewish. The first relates to the unique obligation toward a convert. There are mitzvos incumbent on born-Jews in their relationships with converts. The most striking is the special obligation to love the convert. In light of this, born Jews often experience difficulty deciding when to single out the con- vert and when to treat him or her like any other Jew. It is a very complex matter indeed,1 but as Rabbi Moshe Feinstein avers, the duty to love the convert compels one to be lenient on matters of Halachah that relate to the ability of the convert to integrate into the community.2 1 See Rambam, Sefer HaMitzvos 307. -

Leonard Grunstein* This article explains the modern non-recourse mortgage nancing structure, traces its origins, and suggests that, conceptually, the non-recourse nancing format bears more than a passing resemblance to three nancing forms in use in medieval times, known as the Iska, Qirad, and Commenda. These forms enabled the nancing of trade and business. They also provided for an interest-like return to the nancier, in many cases, without fall- ing astray of the Biblical prohibition against making interest-bearing loans.
