Barriers to Primary Care Among Somali Immigrants In an effort to identify usage patterns and barriers to accessing primary care among Somali families, five trained research personnel administered questionnaires to 125 newly-immigrated Somali patients and 125 non- immigrant patients (comparison group) within St. Cloud’s CentraCare system. The results will assist in defining barriers that prevent Somali immigrants from accessing primary care clinics for non- emergency health concerns and enable physicians to improve family medicine care access. Trans-identified patients reported poor quality health care at a higher rate than non-transgender identified people (44% compared to 25%). With mentorship from Carrie Link, M.D., and Smiley’s physicians, Dr. Amanda Hinrichs will interview and analyze findings regarding how care for TGNC patients can be improved throughout Minnesota and the United States.
