Spring Refresher Provides Education & Networking Opportunities for Minnesota Family Physicians The MAFP welcomed more than 320 family physicians, allied professionals, residents, and medical students to its annual conference on Thursday, April 14, and Friday, April 15. The Depot Minneapolis provided a unique backdrop for family physicians to earn CME credit and network with other attendees. More than 30 educational sessions were offered including a SAM study group on preventive care. Be sure to save the date for next year’s Spring Refresher which is scheduled for April 20 - 21, 2017, at the same venue. Minnesota Family Physician 7 More 2016 MAFP Award Winners Teacher of the Year - Carrie Link, M.D.

Carrie Link, M.D., Minneapolis, was named the 2016 Teacher of the Year. The award is given annually to an outstanding teacher of family medicine in either an academic or practice setting.

Dr. Link is a faculty physician at the University of Minnesota Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program. In that role, nominators say she has found her purpose as a mentor, a clinical-scholar, and a general “earth-shaker.”

They go on to say she is a role model for residents who want to practice full-spectrum family medicine.

Dr. Link is also a preceptor for many medical students on rotation in the clinic and she is the course director for the Service-Learning Experience. Nominators say Dr. Link models community-engagement, support and advocacy on many levels through work she has done to mainstream transgender care with the Health Care Home. Researcher of the Year - Jennifer Pecina, M.D. Jennifer Pecina, M.D., Rochester, received the 2016 Researcher of the Year Award. The recipient of the award must have contributed in an outstanding manner to the development of family medicine research in Minnesota and/or nationally. Dr. Pecina is a consultant at the Mayo Clinic’s Department of Family Medicine in Rochester and an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. With 24 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Pecina has become recognized for her expertise in tele-monitoring of older adults with multiple health issues, as well as innovative programs for medical students to encourage their interest in primary care. Based on her research productivity, Dr. Pecina was awarded the Mayo Family Medicine Silver Research Award. She has presented her work at the North American Primary Care Research Group and The Society for Teachers of Family Medicine. 8 May/June 2016 www.mafp.org 2016 MAFP Award Winners Resident of the Year - Elizabeth Lownik, M.D., MPH Elizabeth Lownik, M.D., MPH, University of Minnesota- North Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program, was chosen as the 2016 Resident of the Year. The award recognizes a third-year resident for significant contributions to family medicine in the community, including teaching, leadership and educational activities. Nominators say Dr. Lownik has been exceptional in her community engagement activities. She has been a mainstay in the program’s underserved medicine curriculum with a regular presence at homeless shelters, has spearheaded activities at CHAT (a monthly forum on the social determinants of health) as well as at The Ladder (a mentorship program for inner-city youth). A former MAFP Resident Director, Dr. Lownik is also a Chief Resident of her program. In 2015, she received an AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Lownik and her husband, Dr. Nathan Mustain, accepted her award with their 4-day old daughter! Medical Student Award - Mark Nelson

Mark Nelson, University of Minnesota Medical School, was given the 2016 Medical Student Award for Contributions to Family Medicine. The award recognizes a medical student for family medicine activities on a local, community, medical school, state or national level. Nominators say Mark uses his unique talent and skills to be an effective and passionate advocate for family medicine. Mark decided to pursue medicine in 2007 - after a successful stage, television and film career. He is a regular performer and contributor for Hippocrates Cafe - a group of actors and musicians who explore healthcare topics using story and song. During MetroPAP, Mark was an active participant in several community outreach activities, was involved in designing a resiliency curriculum for residents, and has remained active in a qualitative research study on urban underserved women’s beliefs about pregnancy.
