Rio EDITION 03 | DECEMBER 2016

A song from Ipanema Decades ago, two bohemians sat in the old bar Veloso, in Rio, drinking and talking. Suddenly, they saw a beautiful girl on her way to Ipanema beach. This moment was the inspiration for the classic song “The Girl From Ipanema,” composed by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, and considered by many the most representative summary of the musical style known as Bossa Nova. The song’s success was huge, spawning more than 170 versions worldwide - even from Frank Sinatra. Since then, everyone wanted to meet the mysterious girl from Ipanema. Vinícius de Moraes revealed later that his muse was Rio native Helô Pinheiro. Today, those who are curious can find out more about the story in the place where it all began – at Veloso Bar, today renamed as Garota de Ipanema.

The legendary REPRODUÇÃO Veloso Bar

A train robber in Rio REPRODUÇÃO A true paradise on Earth: beautiful beaches, sun all year-round and nice, warm people. This description of Rio de Janeiro is universal, and has turned the city into both a pleasant touristic location and a haven. The most notorious case is, of course, of Ronald Biggs, the Great Train Robber. The nickname is because Biggs was part of the group that robbed £ 2.6m from the Glasgow-London train on August

1963. He was jailed, but escaped in 1965 and slipped REPRODUÇÃO away to Belgium, France, Australia and, finally, Brazil (which hadn’t, at that time, an extradition treaty with the United Kingdom). The fact was all-known; photos of Biggs sunbathing in Rio circulated in 1977 – which is also the year when he attended a cocktail party at the Royal Navy frigate HMS Danae, and Ronald Biggs and Sex Pistols was not arrested. In time, bon-vivant Biggs would become a local celebrity and a touristic attraction himself, telling tales about the robbery and his life in Brazil, and recording songs for the first album of punk rock band The Sex Pistols. The infamous man decided to return to the UK in 2001, where he stayed in jail until his death in 2013. POPPERFOTO Tourism in Communities Dive into the simple, poor, disorganized but surprisingly colourful and cheerful universe of Rio’s Communities: a great opportunity to see that a people’s happiness is not binded to their social status. With the pacification of most ‘Morros’ in Rio’s southern region, a high-scale region, there is a growing movement of tourists that want to experience this environment. WHERE TO GO: Factors such as hospitality, great food, lower prices are some of the MORRO SANTA MARTA ROCINHA Communities’ main attractions. They represent Rio’s identity and are a BABILÔNIA great tour option for those who do not want to spend much, but prefer VIDIGAL to have fun in a variety of cultural attractions and, of course, get to know COMPLEXO DO ALEMÃO Brazilians a bit more. Jeep tours are available for the visitors who want to known

Rio’s Communities, as well as touristic trams.
