Figuring translations as gifts positions both source and target cultures as givers and recipients and supplements over-used translation metaphors of betrayal, plundering, submission, or fidelity. As Marcel Mauss articulates, the gift itself desires to be returned and reciprocated. My project maps out the Hemispheric Americas as an independent translation zone and highlights non-European translation norms. Portuguese and Spanish have been sidelined even from European translation studies: only in Mexico and Brazil do we see autochthonous translation theories in Spanish and Portuguese. Focusing on translation strategies that value ii taboo-breaking, I identify poet-translators in Mexico and Brazil who develop their own translation manuals. -

Counter-Narratives and Social Transformation: Insights from an Experience of Legislative Theatre Inspired by Augusto Boal
Decimoprimera Conferencia Regional de América Latina y El Caribe Sociedad Internacional para la Investigación del Tercer Sector Quito, Ecuador, 18 al 20 de octubre de 2017 Thematic axe 4: Emerging research-action issues in Latin America and the Caribbean Counter-narratives and social transformation: insights from an experience of legislative theatre inspired by Augusto Boal Chantale Mailhot1, Marlei Pozzebon2 and Fabio Prado Saldanha3 Introduction The purpose of this paper is to reflect and discuss about the potential of social transformation of an experience of forum theatre – more particularly the Boal’s legislative theatre form – using a counter-narrative perspective. At the one hand, Augusto Boal – theatre director, dramatist, theorist, writer and teacher – was the founder of the movement “theatre of the oppressed”, a repertory of techniques and tactics that seeks to motivate people, restore true dialogue, and create space for participants to rehearse taking action. The underlying vision is that everyone has the capacity to act in the theatre of their own lives, everybody is at once an actor and a spectator. People are “spect-actors!”. Among the different types of interventions conceived by Boal, one that is prominent is the forum theatre, a short play or scene that dramatizes a situation, with an oppressive ending, to provoke spect-actors to react. In its turn, the legislative theatre is essentially a forum theatre performance, but that leads the audience to further discuss policies or laws that could help bring about some of the solutions the engaged audience - “spect-actors” - had offered during the performance. At the other hand, we have Mise au Jeu, an organization of theatre-intervention. -

Representations of Female Adolescence in the Teen Makeover Film By Kendra Marston A Thesis Submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in Fulfilment of the Requirements for a Degree of Master of Arts in Film Victoria University of Wellington 2010 Abstract This thesis proposes to analyse the representation of female adolescence in the contemporary teen makeover film. The study will situate this body of films within the context of the current postfeminist age, which I will argue has bred specific fears both of and for the female adolescent. This thesis will examine the construction of the initial wayward makeover protagonist, paying attention to why she needs to be trained in an idealised gender performance that has as its urgent goal the assurance of heteronormativity and ‘healthy’ sex role power relations. I will also analyse the representation of deviant adolescent female characters in terms of how their particular brand of postfeminist female masquerade masks a power and status-oriented agenda. Uma outra definição possível seria a partir do tema tratado nas peças. Levando em conta a sobreposição dessas várias definições é que iremos problematizar as visões que têm como referência o que é teatro negro no Brasil. Neste artigo, buscamos revelar ao grande público a existência, dos anos 1940 até hoje, de numerosos grupos de teatro negro no Brasil. Através de um trabalho etnográfico nas cidades de São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e Salvador, resgatamos as diferentes experiências desse ato ar- tístico-militante. -

Vol. 15, Num. 3 (Spring 2018): 240-268 Dulcinéia Catadora: Cardboard Corporeality and Collective Art in Brazil Elizabeth Gray Brown University Eloísa Cartonera and Cardboard Networks From a long history of alternative publishing in Latin America, Eloísa Cartonera emerged in Argentina in 2003, and sparked a movement that has spread throughout South and Central America and on to Africa and Europe. The first cartonera emerged as a response to the debt crisis in Argentina in 2001 when the country defaulted causing the Argentine peso to plummet to a third of its value. Seemingly overnight, half of the country fell into living conditions below the poverty line, and many turned to informal work in order to survive. The cartoneros, people who make their living salvaging and reselling recyclable materials, became increasingly present in the streets of Buenos Aires. With the onset of neoliberal policies, people mistrusted and rejected everything tied to the government and economic powers and saw the need to build new societal, political, and cultural models. Two such people were the Argentine poet, Washington Cucurto, and artist Javier Barilaro. Distressed by the rising number of cartoneros and the impossible conditions of the publishing market, Cucurto and Barilaro founded Eloísa Cartonera. Thirteen years later, Eloísa is still printing poetry and prose on Xeroxed paper and binding it in cardboard bought from cartoneros at five times the rate of the recycling Gray 241 centers. The cardboard covers are hand-painted in tempera by community members, including cartoneros, and then sold on the streets for a minimal price, just enough to cover production costs. -

Augusto Boal 1931–2009
Augusto Boal 1931–2009 I came to know of Augusto Boal’s theory of theatre long before I came to know Augusto Boal. It was in 1979 and I was teaching my first class in the theatre department of Mexico’s National University (UNAM) as I worked on my dissertation. I had been assigned three classes a semester—each with about 80 students. The first day of class, a student asked me how theatre could bring about the revolution. My doctoral work at the University of Washington had not prepared me for this. Still, I ventured a response: theatre does not bring about revolutions. But it doesn’t bring about revolutions. The next day, I had 20 students in each of my classes. If theatre could not bring about the revolution, of what possible use could it be? What could theatre do? My entire life as a theatre and performance scholar has been an attempt to answer that question. Boal’s work was never the “answer” to my question, but he became one of my most important guides and mentors. My earmarked copy of Teatro del oprimido had a pirated Susan Meiselas Nicaragua photograph as its cover. The Sandinista fighters were photographed as puregestus in the Brechtian understanding of powerful, recognizable, and quotable social gestures that performed the revolutionary hope of the late 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s throughout Latin America.
