Duran Duran was founded in 1978 by Nick Rhodes and John Taylor. Starting with cautious live attempts in April of 1979, they soon became an established live group with quite a few line-up changes in the very early days. Simon Le Bon joined the band in May of 1980, and the 'classic line-up' - including Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor and Simon Le Bon - did their first gig at the Rum Runner in Birmingham in July of 1980. While on tour with Hazel O'Connor from November until early December in 1980, A&R man Dave Ambrose signed the band to EMI Records. Since then, the group toured every album, but Liberty, and until today, they played nearly 1400 gigs around the globe! Several shows have been broadcast by radio and on TV, but this list features only the live performances, which have been released, either by the band or their record company. But note, most recordings doesn't include the full show of what the band performed that night! ARENA Released in November 1984 as LP, Cassette and CD and re-issued in April 2004 on CD with 2 bonus- tracks. 4:33 Is There Something I Should Know? 4:02 Hungry Like The Wolf 5:37 New Religion 6:11 Save A Prayer [4:17 The Wild Boys] 5:16 The Seventh Stranger 5:15 The Chauffeur 4:07 Union Of The Snake 4:31 Planet Earth 4:07 Careless Memories 5:58 Girls On Film [2004 bonus-track; audio taken from the Arena video soundtrack] 5:56 Rio [2004 bonus-track; audio taken from the Arena video soundtrack] Although labeled as "recorded around the world 1984", the official Arena audio-release uses only the recordings done at the Oakland Coliseum. The album was heavily overdubbed and mixed, and is a completely studio-manufactured sort of 'live' album. Additionally, The Wild Boys as the then current studio-single, is included between Save A Prayer and The Seventh Stranger. On CD, the beginning of The Seventh Stranger is cut off. The Westwood One recording/s is/are from the same Oakland show/s, but it has 4 more songs compared to the original 1984 Arena album (The Reflex, New Moon On Monday, Rio and Girls On Film). It plays the correct track order of performance and does not have the same post-production compared to the Arena release. SAVE A PRAYER Released in January 1985 as a 7" single in the USA. Includes: 3:35 Save A Prayer [live edit from the Arena] Duran Duran: Live Baby Live ARENA (AN ABSURD NOTION) Released in 1985 on VHS amongst other video formats and re-issued in April 2004 on DVD. 4:38 Is There Something I Should Know? 4:08 Hungry Like The Wolf 4:14 Union Of The Snake 5:28 Save A Prayer [7:59 The Wild Boys] 4:41 Planet Earth 4:10 Careless Memories 6:02 Girls On Film [6:50 The Reflex] 5:58 Rio This 'film', with its odd story-line by Russell Mulcahy, is incorporating footage from Oakland, CA and additional crowd and concert footage filmed at the N.E.C. in Birmingham, UK on June 13 and 14, 1984. The long video version of The Wild Boys was integrated between Save A Prayer and Planet Earth. Also, The Reflex in this programme is a studio-remix of the song. AS THE LIGHTS GO DOWN (LIVE) Released in March 2010 on DVD as part of the Seven And The Ragged Tiger 2xCD+DVD edition and as a digital album. 6:08 Tiger Tiger / Is There Something I Should Know? 4:04 Hungry Like The Wolf 4:12 Union Of The Snake 5:31 New Religion 4:15 Save A Prayer 5:48 Rio 4:59 The Seventh Stranger 5:19 The Chauffeur 4:35 Planet Earth 4:25 Careless Memories 7:29 Girls On Film This concert film was conceived by the band and Russell Mulcahy. Compared to Arena (An Absurd Notion), As The Lights Go Down was edited and mixed completely different. Two different visual versions of As The Lights Go Down exist. This released version is also known as the rough edit, that wasn't 'completed' in time for the previously contracted US Cinemax broadcasts. This rough edit version was also used for the 2010 digital audio download release. Besides being shown on ITV in the UK and also on MTV in the US, the latter final edit has never been officially released. In comparison to the rough edit, it has quite a few minor, but also some considerable differences: • opening titles different on intro • Rio is removed, replaced with The Reflex standard promo video • Simon's spoken intro before Girls On Film removed • different graphics/intro/edit to Girls On Film • different end credit titles • includes Tiger Tiger audio over end of credits AS THE LIGHTS GO DOWN (LIVE OAKLAND COLISEUM '84) Released in April 2019 (Record Store Day) as 2xLP on pink and blue (with one side being etched) vinyl. 8:06 Tiger Tiger / Is There Something I Should Know? 4:22 Hungry Like The Wolf 4:10 Union Of The Snake 5:42 New Religion 6:08 Save A Prayer Duran Duran: Live Baby Live 5:44 Rio 5:15 The Seventh Stranger 5:19 The Chauffeur 4:28 Planet Earth 4:42 Careless Memories 6:36 Girls On Film Released by Parlophone, this is finally the performance without all those overdubbed sound effects that were used in the original release. The audio was remastered and re-edited from the (most likely) original and shelved mix done by Jason Corsaro back in 1984. These are some of the differences in comparison to the master video soundtrack: • a longer studio-version of Tiger Tiger has been considered as the opening intro • Simon's spoken introduction before Union Of The Snake is unique here • Save A Prayer is the full performance • the transition between The Seventh Stranger and The Chauffeur differs in length and mix • Careless Memories is noticeably longer at the end of the song • Simon's spoken intro before Girls On Film is shortened LIVE AID July 13, 1985 - JFK Stadium, Philadelphia, PA, USA Filmed and sent out live worldwide.
