We hope consisting of a Windows 2000 based desktop PC, a that our experience will encourage other developers to Winnov Videum capture card, and professional grade explore using the AR toolkit in live performance video cameras. Using software based on the Microsoft scenarios. Vision SDK and OpenGL libraries, the system captured live video of the band or the audience and composited it with real time 3D graphic imagery. The results were projected onto a large screen where the audience could view the results. Simple animations were pre-programmed and triggered based on the lead singer’s requests during the concert. This process enabled animated characters to appear live with the band on a large projection screen. The system created an augmented reality effect that convincingly mixed 3D graphics with the audience’s real world view of the band. Prior to the tour we intended to utilize AR toolkit based tracking during the live shows. The band members Figure 1. Animated character triggered by a fiducial expressed interest in having the ability to appear to pick up animated characters and interact directly with them on stage. In rehearsals, under tightly controlled lighting conditions, this approach worked well. Ultimately, we did not utilize the tracking fiducials during the live shows due to random lighting conditions that made it difficult to achieve consistent results. However, we found that the AR toolkit was extremely useful for pre-programming 3D position locations throughout the stage environment. Before a concert, AR toolkit fiducials were used to set and record 3D coordinates where animated characters and objects would appear in the show. These saved positions were loaded during the live performance. Throughout the Figure 2. Large fiducial used to pre-program 3D stage actual concert, animations were keyboard triggered to coordinates before a live concert performance appear at these pre-programmed stage locations. References This project illustrates both the versatility and the [1] AR Toolkit http://www.hitl.washington.edu/research/shared_space/ practical limitations of using the AR toolkit in a live 1 .

  • Forty Six. the Average Age. the Perfect Age to Start a Band
Forty six. The average age. The perfect age to start a band. Musically skilled, no more stagefright and enough experience in life to tell a story. Too old for hipster hawaiian shirts, moustaches, millennial whoops or hey-hey-ho festival anthems. So if you're looking for a band that’s trying to be meta about a captivating blend of literate, visceral indie rock with propulsive, anthemic choruses, please stop reading. ‘You can label our style as modern 80’s indie rock or even midlife rock.’ So music for old people? No f*-ing way. Morgendust is not a ‘bluesband’, absolutely no ‘tribute band’, they don’t play classic rock and they’re not into bearded, be-flanneled ersatz blues or overly slow and sensitive singer songwriter songs. But they like to tell stories. Stories about this world. Energetic, warm, melancholic and sometimes critical. About the stupid things in life, dreams, social themes, politics and yes: also about love. And lot’s of other stuff that is important at a certain age. ‘Although our lead singer is a drummer too we don’t do that occasional floor tom or two on stage...’ Grown up in the 80’s they love the sounds of this golden era; it’s in their blood. Talk Talk, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd, Tears for Fears and Peter Gabriel. Nowadays they get inspired by everything good like Radiohead, Editors, Elbow & well, just good music... Label it ‘modern 80’s style dark-edged indie rock (they’re really indie, no record labels) or even midlife rock. Whatever you label it, it’s all about making music, the best thing in life to do since they were born.

LISTEN NOW On this new track - ’MORE JOY!’ - Duran Duran channel just that; drilling down on their signature pop energy whilst adding a flavour of J-pop-disco-punk with collaborators CHAI, the fast-rising all-girl punk band from Nagoya, Japan. With ‘MORE JOY!’ Duran show off all the reasons why they’re still one of the most exciting and forward-looking bands on the planet. With fast-paced synths, driving percussion and CHAI’s group chant of “more joy!”, the track does nothing but evoke pure elation. Speaking on the new track, keyboardist Nick Rhodes said: “The song ‘MORE JOY!’ was born out of a crazy jam with Duran Duran, Graham Coxon and Erol Alkan. It was such an unusual piece we weren’t quite sure if it would fit in at first. It reminded me of one of those retro Japanese video games, which I always found quite uplifting. We came up with the chant “more joy” early on, and that became the key to the rest of the track.
