ADAM and the ANTS Adam and the Ants Were Formed in 1977 in London, England ADAM AND THE ANTS Adam and the Ants were formed in 1977 in London, England. They existed in two incarnations. One of which lasted from 1977 until 1982 known as The Ants. This was considered their Punk era. The second incarnation known as Adam and the Ants also featured Adam Ant on vocals, but the rest of the band changed quite frequently. This would mark their shift to new wave/post-punk. They would release ten studio albums and twenty-five singles. Their hits include Stand and Deliver, Antmusic, Antrap, Prince Charming, and Kings of the Wild Frontier. A large part of their identity was the uniform Adam Ant wore on stage that consisted of blue and gold material as well as his sophisticated and dramatic stage presence. Click the band name above. ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN Formed in Liverpool, England in 1978 post-punk/new wave band Echo and the Bunnymen consisted of Ian McCulloch (vocals, guitar), Will Sergeant (guitar), Les Pattinson (bass), and Pete de Freitas (drums). They produced thirteen studio albums and thirty singles. Their debut album Crocodiles would make it to the top twenty list in the UK. Some of their hits include Killing Moon, Bring on the Dancing Horses, The Cutter, Rescue, Back of Love, and Lips Like Sugar. A very large part of their identity was silohuettes. Their music videos and album covers often included silohuettes of the band. They also have somewhat dark undertones to their music that are conveyed through the design. Click the band name above. THE CLASH Formed in London, England in 1976, The Clash were a punk rock group consisting of Joe Strummer (vocals, guitar), Mick Jones (vocals, guitar), Paul Simonon (bass), and Topper Headon (drums). They produced six studio albums and thirty-one singles. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Some of their hits include Rock the Casbah, London Calling, I Fought the Law, Stay Free, Should I Stay or Should I go, Train in Vain, and This is a Radio Clash. For this shirt, I wanted it to be a punk style much like the Clash. Click the band name above. THE CURE The Cure would be formed in Crawley, England in 1976. Other than lead vocalist and guitarist Robert Smith, the band has never consistently had the same members present. They would go through many different genres including new wave, alternative rock, post-punk, and gothic rock. Currently, they have released thirteen studio albums and over thirty singles. In 2019, they would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their hits are Lovesong, A Forest, The Love Cats, Boys Don't Cry, Pictures of You, Just Like Heaven, and Friday I'm in Love. For this design, I wanted to capture the odd, gothic feel of the band. Click the band name above. DURAN DURAN Consisting of Simon Le Bon (vocals), Nick Rhodes (keyboard), John Taylor (bass), Roger Taylor (drums), and Andy Taylor (guitar), Duran Duran is a new wave band formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England. They currently have fourteen studio albums and thirty-nine singles. They have earned numerous awards as well as a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Some of their hits include Rio, Hungry like Wolf, Notorious, The Wild Boys, The Reflex, and A View to a Kill. For this shirt, I wanted to capture the artistic nature of the band with a Rio style drawing of Simon Le Bon. It was important that this shirt had the classic eighties feel of Duran Duran. Their music videos and album covers often included silhouettes of the band. They also have somewhat dark undertones to their music that are conveyed through the design. Click the band name above. LOVE AND ROCKETS Alternative rock band Love and Rockets was formed in 1985 in Northampton, England by former Bauhaus group members Daniel Ash (lead vocals, guitar), David J (vocals, bass), and Kevin Haskins (drums). They would release seven studio albums as well as twenty-one singles. They would even release an album called The Bubblemen are Coming under the alias The Bubblemen. Some of their hits are All in my Mind, So Alive, No Big Deal, Ball of Confusion, No New Tale to Tell, Mirror People, and Yin and Yang (The Flowerpot Man). For this shirt, I wanted to capture the fun, whimsical nature of the band and use their colors of red, white, and black. Click on the band name above. THE PRETENDERS The Pretenders were a rock/new wave band formed in March 1978 in Hereford, England. The band originally consisted of Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals and guitar), James Honeyman-Scott (guitar, vocals, and keyboards), Pete Farndon (bass and vocals), and Martin Chambers (drums, percussion, and vocals). Drug-related deaths would cause the band to undergo many changes with Chrissie Hynde being the only consistent member. They released ten studio albums as well as forty singles and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Some of their hits include Back on the Chain Gang, Brass in Pocket, Don't get me Wrong, Stand by You, Middle of the Road, and Talk of the Town. For this shirt, it was important to capture the bands punk-like, carefree attitude. Click the band name above. SOFT CELL English synthpop duo, Soft Cell, consisted of Marc Almond (vocals) and David Ball (instrumentalist). The group was formed in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK in 1977. They would gain fame from their first album, Non-stop Erotic Cabaret. Overall they would release four studio albums, and nineteen singles. They would break apart in 1984 only to reunite again in 2002. Some of their hits include Tainted Love, Say Hello, Wave Goodbye, Frustration, Memorabilia, Secret Life, and Entertain Me. Neon was a large part of their identity, so it was important to incorporate that neon green into the design and make the white drawing of Marc Almond really stand out. Click the band name above. TALKING HEADS The Talking Heads composed of David Byrne (lead vocals and guitar), Tina Weymouth (bass), Jerry Harrison (guitar), and Chris Franz (drums), were a new wave band formed in 1975 in New York City. The band would have fifteen studio albums and thirty-one singles. In 2002, they would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Overall, they would have many hits. Some of which are Once in a Lifetime, And She was, This Must be the Place, Life During Wartime, Burning Down the House, Wild Wild Life, Houses in Motion, and Nothing but Flowers. The shirt alludes to the colors of one of their classic albums Remain in Light as well as their hit Once in a Lifetime. Overall, I wanted the piece to embody the wacky and artsy identity of the band.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • “THE MOVEMENT of COERCION” Justice David J. Brewer
“THE MOVEMENT OF COERCION” BY Justice David J. Brewer _______ FOREWORD BY DOUGLAS A. HEDIN Editor, MLHP David Josiah Brewer served on the Supreme Court from December 18, 1889 to March 27, 1910. Off the court, he continued to express his views on a wide range of subjects, legal and otherwise, through articles in journals, books and numerous public addresses, including the following to the New York State Bar Association in January 1893. 1 His topic was “The Movement of Coercion” which, he explained, referred to the demands of the “multitudes” to share the wealth earned and accumulated by a few: I wish rather to notice that movement which may be denominated the movement of "coercion," and which by the mere force of numbers seeks to diminish protection to private property. It is a movement which in spirit, if not in letter, violates both the Eighth and Tenth Command- ments; a moment, which, seeing that which a man has, attempts to wrest it from him and transfer it to those who have not. It is the unvarying law, that the wealth of a community will not be in the hands of a few, and the greater the general wealth, the greater the individual accumulations. 1 In his biography of the justice, Michael J. Brodhead devotes an entire chapter to his “off-the- bench activities.” David J. Brewer: The Life of a Supreme Court Justice, 1837-1919 116-138 (Southern Illinois Univ. Press, 1994)(“In fact, he was the most visible and widely known member of the Fuller Court.”). 1 He argued that the “coercion movement” against private property expressed itself through, first, unions and, second, excessive regulation, though neither was evil per se : First, in the improper use of labor organizations to destroy the freedom of the laborer, and control the uses of capital.
