After downgrading the growth rate of the world economy and factoring in the government’s reconstruction policies and draft proposal for the integrated reform of the social security and tax systems, we now forecast that Japan's economy will grow 2.4% (nominal) and 1.8% (real) over the next 10 years (annualized average trend rates). Rather than actual level, what has become problematic with respect to currency rates is the fluctuation that far exceeds changes in economic fundamentals. Excessive fluctuation in market exchange rates not only directly worsens Japan's economy but also has the indirect but still major adverse effect of restraining the growth of nominal wages as companies seek to maintain export competitiveness. To roll back the overly strong yen, measures that take a long-term view are needed. Specific steps that could be taken are rules to control excessive fluctuation accompanying a floating exchange rate system and Japan's manufacturers endeavoring to make products whose selling prices do not fall and developing sales methods where price reductions are not necessary. Electricity shortages resulting from the halt of nuclear power plants have mainly been met by curbing the demand of large-volume electricity users and by increasing the operating rate of thermal power plants.

    News from JAMA Motorcycle Autumn 2001 "Good Rider" Crime Prevention Registrations Top One Million Mark - Highly Effective Program Now in Sixth Year - The Japan Motorcycle Safety Association (Chairman Yoshihide Munekuni, Chairman of Honda) recently announced that the number of registrations under its "Good Rider" crime prevention program surpassed the one-million milestone at the end of this June. The Good Rider registration system was first introduced in 1996 by the Association, in cooperation with Japan's motorcycle industry and the National Police Agency. It seeks to prevent the theft of motorcycles by having the vehicles registered in advance. Motorcycle owners are encouraged to join the Good Rider crime prevention registration system at the dealer outlets where they purchase their vehicles. Upon joining, they receive a crime prevention registration sticker and a user card which provides proof of ownership. The information is added to a nationwide database compiled by the Association, which is supplied to the National Police Agency and placed online at all police stations in Japan. This enables any Japanese police officer to access the database of registered motorcycles on an around-the-clock basis.     TO áååÉåéçäáíáâ Abgezählt – die DPJ und die Frauenquote Simone Kopietz und Alexander Winkscha Counting (on) Women: DPJ and Gender Quota In the Japanese Parliament, women are dramatically underrepresented. In more than a hundred countries this democratic deficit is addressed through the introduction of gender quotas. In most cases these equality guarantees have proven to be effective in securing equal access to political mandates for both sexes. In Japan, however, this so- called Positive Discrimination approach is considered far more cautiously due to the liberal democratic framework within which Japanese politics is embedded. Neverthe- less, in late 2014, the Democratic Party of Japan declared its intention to introduce a party-level quota system, raising several questions: What are the true motives behind this unexpectedly progressive step? And what does this mean for the prospect of actual realization? Using the analysis framework of Mona Lena Krook, this study differenti- ates between principled stands and strategic incentives structuring the DPJ’s decision. It shows that, although the DPJ does indeed hold strong principled stands, encouraging it in general to secure equal opportunities for both sexes, this motive alone is not strong enough to push the DPJ to the final stage of implementation. Data collection and analysis has been conducted in a two-stage process. Firstly, candidates’ website and social media use (Twitter and Facebook) during election campaigns was examined, establishing the degree to which candidates are using new media to pursue the personal vote, and what form this takes. Findings from candidate new media use were also used to formulate the second stage of research – interviews with candidates and members of parliament in both the UK and Japan. A secondary research question has also examines whether personal vote seeking behaviour has a positive impact on candidates’ electoral performance, or whether party performance factors are a key factor of performance at the constituency level.

The incidence of autism has increased rapidly in Taiwan in recent years; however, little is known about families’ experiences of autism. Autism has a huge impact on family life and the caring responsibilities of parents. Moreover, the impact of autism on parents is gendered both in terms of experience and the meaning of parenthood. This article studies the gendered suffering and meaning associated with illness and parenthood among parents of autistic children in Taiwan. Using narrative analysis, this article discusses how parents interpret the meaning of autism and their parenthood with regard to their caring responsibilities. Moreover, the uniqueness of autism in Taiwan is emphasized. 2. Autism and Autistic Patients in Taiwan Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social functioning and communication skills, and by abnormality in unusual behaviors and interests. The disorder often lasts into adulthood and its symptoms can affect every aspect of a patient’s life. Autism is also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD); as it is a spectrum disorder, this means it includes different types of symptoms and degrees of severity, so every autistic child may behave totally differently.
