Newsletter of the Naval Wargames Society No. 290 – DECEMBER 2018 Extract from President Roosevelt’s, “Fireside Chat to the Nation”, 29 December 1940: “….we cannot escape danger by crawling into bed and pulling the covers over our heads……if Britain should go down, all of us in the Americas would be living at the point of a gun……We must produce arms and ships with every energy and resource we can command……We must be the great arsenal of democracy”. oOoOoOoOoOoOoOo The Poppies of four years ago at the Tower of London have been replaced by a display of lights. Just one of many commemorations around the World to mark one hundred years since the end of The Great War. Another major piece of art, formed a focal point as the UK commemorated 100 years since the end of the First World War. The ‘Shrouds of the Somme’ brought home the sheer scale of human sacrifice in the battle that came to epitomize the bloodshed of the 1914-18 war – the Battle of the Somme. Artist Rob Heard hand stitched and bound calico shrouds for 72,396 figures representing British Commonwealth servicemen killed at the Somme who have no known grave, many of whose bodies were never recovered and whose names are engraved on the Thiepval Memorial. Each figure of a human form, was individually shaped, shrouded and made to a name. They were laid out shoulder to shoulder in hundreds of rows to mark the Centenary of Armistice Day at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park from 8-18th November 2018 filling an area of over 4000 square metres. -

NAYAL SITUATION. General Review. THE outstanding event in the Naval Situation during the past week has been the action taken to prevent the French Fleet falling into enemy hands. At least 4 Italian submarines and one destroyer have been sunk in the Mediterranean. There has been a considerable reduction in the number of German U-boats on patrol. French Fleet. 2. The French failure to comply with their undertaking to prevent their fleet falling into the hands of our enemies as a result of the armistice necessitated action by us to that end on the 3rd July, on which, date the disposition of the principal French naval forces was as shown in Appendix IV. All vessels in British ports were seized. At Plymouth the seizure was effected without incident except for the submarine Surcouf, where 2 British officers were seriously wounded and 1 rating killed and 1 wounded. One French officer was also killed and 1 wounded. At Portsmouth a leaflet raid was carried out on the French ships for the crews' information and the ships successfully seized. -

Stein2 Abstract Having ‘served his apprenticeship’ as Second Master on board HMS Assistance during Captain Horatio Austin’s expedition in search of the missing Franklin expedition in 1850–51, whereby he had made two quite impressive sledge trips, in the spring of 1852 Frederick John Krabbé was selected by Captain Leopold McClintock to serve under him as Master (navigation officer) on board the steam tender HMS Intrepid, part of Captain Sir Edward Belcher’s squadron, again searching for the Franklin expedition. After two winterings, the second off Cape Cockburn, southwest Bathurst Island, Krabbé was chosen by Captain Henry Kellett to lead a sledging party west to Mercy Bay, Banks Island, to check on the condition of HMS Investigator, abandoned by Commander Robert M’Clure, his officers and men, in the previous spring. Krabbé executed these orders and was thus the last person to see Investigator afloat. Since, following Belcher’s orders, Kellett had abandoned HMS Resolute and Intrepid, rather than their return journey ending near Cape Cockburn, Krabbé and his men had to continue for a further 140 nautical miles (260 km) to Beechey Island. This made the total length of their sledge trip 863½ nautical miles (1589 km), one of the longest man- hauled sledge trips in the history of the Arctic. Introduction On 22 July 2010 a party from the underwater archaeology division of Parks Canada flew into Mercy Bay in Aulavik National Park, on Banks Island, Northwest Territories – its mission to try to locate HMS Investigator, abandoned here by Commander Robert McClure in 1853.3 Two days later underwater archaeologists Ryan Harris and Jonathan Moore took to the water in a Zodiac to search the bay, towing a side-scan sonar towfish. -

WESTWOOD nCHTING C1TTDC or WORLD World War II was the last of the great naval wars, the culmination of a century of warship development in which steam, steel and finally aviation had been adapted for naval use. The battles, both big and small, of this war are well known, and the names of some of the ships which fought them are still familiar, names like Bismarck, Warspite and Enterprise. This book presents these celebrated fighting ships, detailing both their war- time careers and their design features. In addition it describes the evolution between the wars of the various ship types : how their designers sought to make compromises to satisfy the require - ments of fighting qualities, sea -going capability, expense, and those of the different naval treaties. Thanks to the research of devoted ship enthusiasts, to the opening of government archives, and the publication of certain memoirs, it is now possible to evaluate World War II warships more perceptively and more accurately than in the first postwar decades. The reader will find, for example, how ships in wartime con- ditions did or did not justify the expecta- tions of their designers, admiralties and taxpayers (though their crews usually had a shrewd idea right from the start of the good and bad qualities of their ships). With its tables and chronology, this book also serves as both a summary of the war at sea and a record of almost all the major vessels involved in it. -

Vol.XVII No.1 January-i'-iarch 1973 Sl\1-1 J .M. BROVJN - MARINE ARTIST (1873-1965) Fifty years ago a \'/ell known marine artist, Sam J .M. Brown, resided in Belgrave S trcet, Lis card, vlallasey. Of his work, there are still originals and reproductions about, nnd fortunately Liverpool Huseums have some attractive specimens. It happened that the writer once had tea with the family, being in 1925 a school friend of Edwin Brown, the artist's only son. Edwin later became a successful poultry farmer but was not endowed with his father's artistic talents. - 1 - Sam Brown painted for Lamport and Holt, Blue Funnel, Booth, Yeoward Lines etc., in advertising and calendar work. He made several sea voyages to gain atmosphere far his pictures, even to the River Amazon. In local waters his favourite type seemed to be topsail schooners, often used as comparisons to the lordly liners of the above mentioned fleets. About 1930, the Browns moved to NalpD.S, Cheshire, and though Sam exhibited a beautiful picture of swans at the Liver Sketching Club's autumn exhibition one year, no further ship portraiture appeared. In November 1972, I was privileged to attend an exhibition of Murine paintings, on the opening day at the Boydell Galler ies, Castle Street .
