A Message From the Artistic Director

“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.” –Rumi

Welcome to our production of the 2010 , Next to Normal. Only the eighth musical to win this prestigious award, the prize committee cited the ’s integrity and truthfulness as it grappled with a woman’s mental illness and its impact on her family. This musical centers on Diana Goodman, a woman who has suffered from for the past sixteen years. A very mental illness, it is esti- mated that 3 percent of the U.S. population is challenged by bipolar disorder. While much has been learned about this ill- ness, and its name has changed several times, there remain aspects of it that are simply not known. This musical is much the same way. Please don’t expect neat answers where there are none.

As a director, material like this is about as good as it gets. Next to Normal reaches me on multiple levels: emotionally, intellec- tually, dramatically, spiritually, and, of course, musically. Among a newer class of contemporary works—like Spring Awakening and —Next to Normal uses the ex- pressive quality of the medium to explore human relationships in their beautiful and ugly and dark places at once.

Working on this important piece of musical theatre has been a privilege and a pleasure. The world isn’t an easy place all the time. No one truly understands what it feels like to be inside the mind and heart of another person. We’re all fighting difficult battles. Next to Normal is a call to understand people who suf- fer mental and emotional disorders. This musical play also great- ly celebrates the human spirit; it celebrates the power of famili- al love; it celebrates the refusal to give up.

Have you addressed Retirement Living? This voyage has been filled with awe and wonder and discov- ery. All my fellow passengers on this voyage, the designers, the creative team, the band, and the actors are honored to bring Next to Normal to you.

Greetings everyone and welcome to the Susquehanna Stage Company’s PULITZER PRIZE SEASON 2017! This season Olde Town also represents our 9th year of operation, in which we “celebrate, through theatrical performances, the common Sampler humanity binding us all together” (from our mission state- ment). Those words, written years ago, still echo the goals our company strives to maintain within our artistic communi- ty.

Nine seasons of hard work, long board meetings, Saturday Antiques 630 Lancaster Ave. clean-up days, but also packed audiences, standing ova- Columbia, PA 17512 Candles tions, Broadway World nominations and wins, truly excellent Open: Thur.-Sat. 11 to 5 critically acclaimed plays and musicals; and we’ve learned Primitives Sunday 11 to 4 time and again that family doesn’t always mean those con- Gifts Tel. # (717) 314-9699 nected by blood.

Thank you to everyone who has ever set foot in SSC, either onstage, backstage, or in the audience. With our recent purchase of the Historic Marietta Theatre, we have set our sights on being around for a long, long, time.

Our inspiration for the 2017 season came from the phenome- nal success of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s , currently on Broadway for anyone lucky enough or rich enough to get tickets. HAMILTON is the winner of 11 and more importantly the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Since the distin- guished yearly award began in 1917, only 9 musicals have been awarded this prestigious distinction! That, dear readers, was the birth of an idea, albeit an ambitious and challeng- ing idea. Why not create and promote an entire season of Pulitzer Prize winning plays and musicals? Why not??!!
