A look at Europe’s top 30 airlines, based on flights offered from European airports in the first week of February, shows that for 26 of them, a domestic route has the highest frequency. The exceptions are Austrian Airlines, KLM, Ryanair and Wizz Air. If we look at the top five routes for the 30 airlines, comprising a total of 150 routes, just 25 of them (17%) are international connections (shown on a grey background). Ranking Europe’s airlines by flights (rather than seats or ASKs) produces some interesting results. There are two Turkish carriers in the top six, and six Russian airlines in the top 30. Norway’s regional carrier Widerøe ranks fourth, Binter Canarias ranks 13th and Greece’s Sky Express 21st. Conversely, Europe’s leading (U)LCCs are performing poorly at present; easyJet is 12th, Ryanair 15th, Wizz Air 16th, Vueling 23rd and Norwegian 28th. The European aviation market can be characterised by extreme growth and turbulence ever since the markets were deregulated and low cost carriers emerged on the continent. Initially the biggest toll was paid by main legacy carriers when low costs emerged on trunk routes, which lead to the bankruptcy of Sabena, Swiss airlines and Spanair. However, once big legacy carriers started merging and creating more alliances, sustainability was once again reached. Despite this, as low cost carriers entered the Eastern-European market and looked to stimulate even smaller regional routes, smaller carriers started to suffer. This article is assessing the status quo of the current European region- al aviation, highlighting the recent trends and ultimately coming to a conclusion that regional airlines can be sustaina- ble provided that certain key criteria have been met.

Within the scope of this research, the main focus was on the research question: How can the variation in the claims of sustainable measures reported in the 2018 annual reports and sustainability reports by four different European airlines be explained from the characteristics of the airlines and of the countries in which the airlines are registered?. The ecosystem for the conducted analyses consists of four airlines from four different countries in the European Union. Seven sustainability parameters were chosen in order to objectively analyze the sustainability reporting of the airlines and of their countries of registrations.
