DVAR TORAH BY RABBI METZGER [email protected] Why is Yaakov the first person to bless and give blessings and a will to his descendants before his death? The Midrash (Breishit Rabbah 65:9) explains that Yaakov specifically requested that there be sickness in the world. Why? Because until that point people would simply pass away with no warning. Yaakov wanted to be able to rebuke and bless his sons shortly before he passed away, and if he didn’t get sick he would have no warning about when that would be. But why is being sick in bed close to death necessary to rebuke someone? The Sifrei Devarim gives four reasons - 1) so one doesn’t rebuke multiple times 2) so no one will be embarrassed by the rebuke 3) so there will be no hard feelings 4) so that the descendants will say goodbye peacefully. People often procrastinate and say “I’ll get around to it later,” “when I’m not so busy I’ll have time…” and with no clear deadline, people don’t seek to change or repent for their actions. Yaakov knew that seeing one’s own or a close relative’s mortality can change that perspective and allow people to accept the rebuke and change.

Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

What is hecha kedushah, and how is it conducted?

When time is short, or when it is unsafe to be together for an extended time, a minyan may abbreviate the davening by having the chazan recite the amidah first, through kedushah, and then having the community complete the amidah silently. This is called hecha kedushah, a Yiddish term meaning "loud kedushah".

There are multiple views regarding how the pre-kedushah portion of the amidah should be recited. The two most common practices in contemporary Ashkenazi minyanim are:  The minyan recites the first three berachot silently along with the chazan's loud recitation, responds to kedushah, says “L’dor vador” with the chazan, and then concludes the amidah silently. But ideally, one participant should not recite with the chazan, and should only respond to the chazan and then recite the entire amidah, from the beginning, silently.  The minyan listens to the first three berachot and responds "Amen", responds to kedushah, and then recites the en- tire amidah, from the beginning, silently.

Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik practiced the former approach, but the latter approach seems to be more common.

Adult Education is planning a Zoom Trivia Night. Compete against other families Motzei Shabbos January 23, 2021 ANNOUNCEMENTS MEET OUR BOARD: WITH LAYA WITTY

Hi, thanks for asking. I doubt that there is much to hear about me that people do not already know, but if it helps you out, here are some answers:

I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and married Rabbi Avrham Aryaih Witty in 1989. (Fun Fact: we had Sheva Brachos at the BAYT, July 6, 1989). We lived in communities in the US over the next 14 years. Our family grew to 7 children, Yisrael Mordechai, Tzipporah, Rivka, Tzvi, Shlomo, Kinneret, and Eliezer. Kinneret and Eli are still at home with us, the rest of the family have made Aliyah. We also have grandkids living in Israel, Devorah, Yitzchak Gamliel, David and Aharon Rosner, and Tikva and Eli- sheva Witty.

We moved back to the Toronto area in 2003 and joined the shul that year. I believe I joined the Youth Committee in 2005 and the Sisterhood in 2006, and served as Sisterhood president from 2007-2009. I found the experience of being able to give my time to the shul very rewarding. It was empowering to be able to give back to the shul which has given my family so much. It was actually the experience of being a member of the Shul Board and Executive which inspired me to go to law school in 2008 (Osgoode Hall, Class of 2011) and then to be called to the Bar.

Since 2011, I have been working as a personal injury lawyer, helping injured people in their disputes with the insurance indus- try. It is very satisfying work, and I enjoy helping my clients feel that they have been heard, and that their pain has been acknowledged.

Best part of BAYT: There is a tremendous variety in the shul, especially in the Torah learning that goes on here. Whatever you are interested in, you will find other people who want to learn it too. For example, in 2018, when the worldwide 929 Tanach project began its second journey through studying the entire Tanach, a chapter a day, I wanted to start a study group in the shul, and we were able to bring together about a dozen of us who continue to learn together every week. (Special thanks to Rabbi Witty, who teaches the shiur.)

What life is about for me is kindness. I believe that G-d loves each and every one of us. When we feed, clothe, strengthen and comfort each other, we enable His love for us to be expressed in the physical world. That is why I am here, and, to the best of my ability, that is what I do.

THANK YOU TO THOSE SERVING IN THE IDF If you have children or grandchildren currently serving in the IDF please email [email protected] and we will add them to a list to be kept in mind during davening. Please send in their Hebrew name and their mother's Hebrew name. Thank You.

NAMES TO KEEP IN MIND: Ariel Markus - Ariel Abraham ben Tova Rivka, Yaakov Moll - Eli Yaakov ben Gavriela, Miya Hames - Miya Rachel Devorah bat Yehudit Chaya Sarah, Yonatan Rosenzweig - Yonatan Menachem Dodi Ben Aura Chaya, Zachary Brown - Zacharya Zalman Ben Chana, Gavriel Bowman - Gavriel Ben Laya Michal ANNOUNCEMENTS SISTERHOOD PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I know that Purim seems very far away, but as we turn the calendar to 2021, our committee is in full swing to bring you the amazing Mishloach Manot campaign that the BAYT community has come to love. This year, we need your help.

Please log into your BAYT account and head over to the campaign page and select if you would prefer to receive an electronic scroll in lieu of a basket, are able to pick up your mishloach manot at the shul, or if you are unable to leave your house due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, please select delivery. If nothing has been selected, it will default to in shul pick up. By completing this portion early, we have ample time to organize our delivery routes, and pick up schedule. Should your situation change clos- er to Purim, please email [email protected] with the re line “MISHLOACH MANOT CHANGE”.

As many of you have noticed, and commented, we have changed the format this year. First, there is no early bird special. As 2020 was a difficult year for many in our community, we have kept the pricing at $6.00 per name for this year’s entire cam- paign. With this gift to you, our community, we are asking for your help to please make sure that all orders are submitted by the deadline.

Finally, we will need your help more then ever with packaging and delivery. One of the highlights of my first Purim as the Sis- terhood President was seeing how many of you came out on the Saturday night before Purim to help with the packaging. If you are able to help with the packaging or with delivery, please select those options when logging into the campaign. We are in con- sultation with the shul’s Health Committee and Reopening Committee to ensure that we are in compliance with the necessary protocols when we will be packing and distributing the Mishloach Manot.

On behalf of the committee, I thank you very much for your support this year and look forward to seeing you all again very soon!

NEW REGISTRATION SYSTEM TO MINYANIM

The new system for signup is that registration for each day will open at 6 pm the evening before. You will need to register daily for the next day's minyanim. The link remains the same: https://www.bayt.ca/new-sign-up-link.html

Please be sure to login to your BAYT account to access the sign-up genius.

Please also keep in mind that by signing up, you are committing to be one of ten that are needed to make a minyan. Do NOT sign up if you're not sure if you will attend. By signing up, you are also committing to be on time and stay until the very last kaddish of each service.

To shorten davening times, Davening at Shacharis begins now at "YISHTABACH," except for the 6:30 am minyan, which cannot start any earlier due to times of dawn. Please recite Pesukei D'Zimra before coming to shul.

If you signed up and need to cancel the morning of the minyan, please either find your own replacement, or call Aaron Rosenberg at 647) 234-0696.

Most importantly: if you are feeling unwell for any reason, please do NOT come, even if this means that there won't be a minyan. Everyone's safety is more important than making the minyan.

Please Remember:  All siddurim and seforim in the Bais Medrash are currently not available to be used or removed from shelves.  As soon as the minyan has ended please exit the building as soon as possible to enable others in and the staff to clean .
