Jeffrey Brown DVAR TORAH BY RABBI METZGER [email protected] Why is Yaakov the first person to bless and give blessings and a will to his descendants before his death? The Midrash (Breishit Rabbah 65:9) explains that Yaakov specifically requested that there be sickness in the world. Why? Because until that point people would simply pass away with no warning. Yaakov wanted to be able to rebuke and bless his sons shortly before he passed away, and if he didn’t get sick he would have no warning about when that would be. But why is being sick in bed close to death necessary to rebuke someone? The Sifrei Devarim gives four reasons - 1) so one doesn’t rebuke multiple times 2) so no one will be embarrassed by the rebuke 3) so there will be no hard feelings 4) so that the descendants will say goodbye peacefully. People often procrastinate and say “I’ll get around to it later,” “when I’m not so busy I’ll have time…” and with no clear deadline, people don’t seek to change or repent for their actions. Yaakov knew that seeing one’s own or a close relative’s mortality can change that perspective and allow people to accept the rebuke and change. Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected] What is hecha kedushah, and how is it conducted? When time is short, or when it is unsafe to be together for an extended time, a minyan may abbreviate the davening by having the chazan recite the amidah first, through kedushah, and then having the community complete the amidah silently. This is called hecha kedushah, a Yiddish term meaning "loud kedushah". There are multiple views regarding how the pre-kedushah portion of the amidah should be recited. The two most common practices in contemporary Ashkenazi minyanim are: The minyan recites the first three berachot silently along with the chazan's loud recitation, responds to kedushah, says “L’dor vador” with the chazan, and then concludes the amidah silently. But ideally, one participant should not recite with the chazan, and should only respond to the chazan and then recite the entire amidah, from the beginning, silently. The minyan listens to the first three berachot and responds "Amen", responds to kedushah, and then recites the en- tire amidah, from the beginning, silently.
