ART REVIEW AS REFLECTED by the ROMANIAN PRESS (1900-1914) - Abstract
ART REVIEW AS REFLECTED BY THE ROMANIAN PRESS (1900-1914) - Abstract - The doctoral thesis is structured according to five major units: Introduction, the six central chapters, Conclusions, References and Appendices. The paper has a total of 260 pages, of which 216 pages are the text itself, with 891 footnotes. In the Introduction I presented the reasons for choosing the subject of the paper, reminding the most important studies and research previously developed in the relevant historiography. Also, I mentioned the methods used and I listed the main cultural magazines analysed for the period between 1900 and 1914. The analysed Romanian press included both cultural magazines from the former kingdom (“Convorbiri literare”, “Noua Revistă Română”, “Sămănătorul”, “Viața Românească”, “Furnica”, “Flacăra”, etc.), as well as magazines from Transylvania (“Luceafărul”, “Transilvania”, “Țara Noastră”, “Telegraful Român”, etc.). On the other hand, I attempted a comparative analysis of the Romanian press and the western press in terms of art reviews. For this purpose I chose prestigious foreign art magazines of the time, consulted on the occasion of the mobility period spent in Italy, such as “Emporium”, “Vita d’arte”, “Il Giornale d’Italia”, “Il Marzocco”, “La Stampa”, etc. Also, I studied the funds of the International Exhibition in Rome in 1911, in which our country participated as well, the delegation of which was conducted by Al. Tzigara-Samurcaș, found in the central state archives in Rome. The second part of the thesis includes the actual research, where Chapters 1-6 are the original contribution of the author. In I. Social and Cultural Context in the Early Twentieth Century for the Romanian Elite I presented briefly the cultural and social framework in which the Romanian artists lived, were educated and created, as reflected in the press. -

ROMÀNIA ORIENTALE Dipartimento Di Studi Europei, Americani E Interculturali
31 ROMÀNIA 2018 ORIENTALE DIPARTIMENTO DI STUDI EUROPEI, AMERICANI E INTERCULTURALI University Press ROMÀNIA ORIENTALE Dipartimento di Studi europei, americani e interculturali 31, 2018 2018 L’ERRANCE ÉTERNELLE DU DESTIN JUIF DANS LE MAL DES FANTÔMES BENJAMIN FONDANE: BUCAREST-PARIS-AUSCHWITZ Emilia David Abstract – The individual destiny and the intellectual biography of Benjamin Fon- dane allow us to reconstruct his existential pathway as a sequence of three fundamen- tal stages, marked by three emblematic cities: Bucharest-Paris-Auschwitz. The last one represents an infernal, ominous topos, a place of no return. Bucharest and Paris were the cities that profoundly shaped his cultural identity. In the capital of his first country he assiduously attended to the birth and development of several modernist and avant-garde artistic groups. On the other hand, from the late 1920s on, the City of Lights made it possible for Fundoianu-Fondane to assert himself as a philosopher within the frames of existentialism and to be recognised as an essayist of European stature. His transfer to Drancy (1944), which then led to his being sent to the gas chambers of the Nazi concentration camp from Auschwitz-Birkenau, marked the be- ginning of a personal experience which precipitated into a brutal and atrocious end. This study will present a few documentary texts, published in literary journals of the French Resistance, such as Les Lettres Françaises and Les Cahiers du Sud. We will also include other aspects relating to Benjamin Fondane’s contributions to the periodical publications of the French Resistance, revealing the vocation of some cities and personalities to become entrenched in collective memory as benchmarks of moral revolt and intransigence. -

Fall 2020] ABSTRACT: Veronica Porumbacu (1921-1977) was a Romanian poet and translator who has been unjustly forgotten today due to her proletcultist poems of the 1950s. Yet her work was widely published and well-known during the socialist re- gime, and is especially relevant for the two decades of growth and ideological innovation of the 1960s and 1970s. In my article I analyze a remarkable vol- ume of hers published in 1966, situating it in the context of her work and in the wider frame of the political context of Romania. I argue that Return from Cythera can be considered a conceptual manifesto of socialist feminism, rely- ing on reflexive eroticism, embodied thought, and historical consciousness to challenge the surrounding patriarchal order and to claim the necessity of developing a different cultural genealogy, centered on the standpoint and ex- periences of women. © Wagadu (2020) ISSN : 1545-6196 2 | Ovidiu Ţichindeleanu Postcommunist România has tried hard to abandon its own recent past, although as visual artist Ciprian Mureşan has reminded us, strictly speaking “Communism never happened.”1 In the past three decades of “post-socialist” or “post-communist” West-oriented transition, a specific type of forgetting has been perfected in aca- demia, the public sphere, as well as the larger culture industry. -

RETROVERSIUNE Emil Giurgiuca - Monografie Unquestionably, those who know the literary life from Transylvania, as little as possible, will not consider a futile effort to remove a writer from the undeserved shadow where the history placed him. Emil Giurca’s cultural activity, because about him we are talking about, is a significant “brick” from the wall which was created along with the vast process of clarifying the literary and spiritual Romanian literature and culture. Creator of literature, respected educator, he was in the same time an important fighter for national ideal but also a great entertainer, a cultural advisor to generations of writers from the interwar and postwar period. As many researchers of the aesthetic values observed, it seems that in any literature are important writers, widely recognized from the valuable point of view “as others who fall slightly below, but on different places in the hierarchy of values, enriching and diversifying artistic landscape from their period of time”1. Originally poet from his homeland, as Dumitru Micu noticed in “Romanian Literary History”, he became later the national poet of the whole national space, Emil Giurca cannot easily be integrated in any current or cannot be said that he belongs to any literary school and “if he installed in the classical formula, adopted by traditionalists (as Ion Barbu, a Paul Valery writer), he did it of course, because this formula and only it suited to his sensibility”2, Dumitru Micu said. Each poem in consistent with the requirements of the art is organize by an act of inner balance, a sense of the extent of composition; this is what we call Emil Giurca’s modernism. -

The Identity of the Romanian Pre-Avant-Garde
Cuvinte cheie: Pre-avangardă, anti-tradiţionalism, manifest poetic, post-simbolism, program- articol, arhitext Abstract: In the evolution and dialectics of the literary phenomenon at the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century we can note a period of artistic fizzle, of confirming literary currents and movements, that vehemently deny the tradition and which, through some important elements, shall announce the historical avant-garde. We are referring to a series of artistic and literary currents, with a set of similar features, having a fetish for the shocking novelty and bracketing of the established and generally accepted values, without having the force of penetration, aggressiveness, coherence and spreading of the actual avant-garde: the fauvism, cubism, futurism, imagism, vorticism and others. Keywords: Pre-avantgarde, anti-traditionalism, poetic manifest, post-symbolist, programme- article, archi-text. -

Catina -Alina Preda (Adjunct lecturer at the Dept. of Languages, Literature & Culture of the Black Sea Countries, Democritus University of Thrace) Literatura română la începutul secolului al XX-lea The Romanian Literature at the beginning of the 20th century Any scientific research upon any writer's work must start by establishing the spatial and temporal 'coordinates' in which the analysed phenomenon appears and de- velops. In this way, we think that a part of the marvelous work of Istratti can be better interpreted within the Romanian literature of the 20th century. This is why we intend to summarise the most significant aspects of the Romanian world of literature, as these are elements indispensable to our study. At the beginning of the 20th century, the debate between Maiorescu and Gherea is well known. It apparently stopped but it was re-ignited by some writers, out of habit, thus making the literary world of that period be dynamic. The need of a new direction for the Romanian literature was best perceived by Mihail Kogalniceanu, who actually succeeded in re-uniting some of the most signifi- cant authors of the time within the “Dacia literara” magazine. This explains the creation of a representative part of the literature, made up of writers who, even though not completely mature, proved themselves capable of un- derstanding their position and role under the new socio-cultural conditions that they had to reflect in one way or another. Not only did they manage to create a synthesis of the period of 1848, but they also achieved the gradual conquest of the socio-political fields and, eventually of the literary one. -
Bacovia, a Poet from the Edges of Existence
Salonul invitatilor BACOVIA, A POET FROM THE EDGES OF EXISTENCE Mihai CIMPOI Uniunea Scriitorilor din Moldova 1. The Poet - the Person When alive, Bacovia was considered a ‘minor poet’ and for a time after his death was quite forgotten. However today, he has again the scene, and is consid- ered great. Within the Romanian cultural space on both sides of the River Prut, he has become an emblematic figure of the existential sensibility that in our dynam- ic and convulsive present, is consuming modern man with his stressful spiritual states. Bacovia is read and studied by high school and university students who discover themselves in the monotonous, melancholy tonality of his verses. Many books, studies, essays, and PhD theses are being written about his work, and the postmodernists consider him their forerunner due to his fragmentary style and de- constructivism. How can you define a poet who once said that he was neither a traditional- ist, nor a modernist, and could not be caged in any one trend or artistic movement? Nevertheless, in some interviews he did admit to being a ‘poet of decadence’. Above all, Bacovia was an isolate, immersed in a zone of darkness and an underworld of strange shadows, of phantoms in a melange of desperate shrieks, groans and weeping that came from matter itself (‘. .heard all matter weeping ...). Such a solitary, timid figure, set apart by an endless neuroses, and living in a pro- vincial environment so full of misery, he appears to have come straight out of the slums of Dickens, or the gallery of those unstable, lyrical characters of Tennyson. -
George Bacovia 1 George Bacovia
