2018 Annual Awards Dinner Christopher S. Edmond Lieutenant - Retired Nassau County Sheriff’s Guardians Awardee

Christopher Edmond was born June 23, 1962 to a single mother, Lois Steen Thompson of West Helena Arkansas. Early on it was believed that he suffered from birth defects, but GOD! Up until the fifth (5th) grade he was raised by his grandparents Hosea and Sarah Thompson. Two (2) weeks shy of his twelfth (12th) birthday, Christopher and his four (4) siblings was relocated to Freeport New York to live with their mother. During his junior high and high school years Christopher was an average student, but excelled in athletics. His high school years were highlighted with two (2) Ironman Awards. Individuals that participated in three (3) varsity sports were deemed Ironmen. Christopher participated in football, wrestling, and baseball. He received All-Conference, All-County, and All-State Awards in high school, but is most proud to have earned a full wrestling scholarship to attend the University of Tennessee. Thirty (30) minutes away from reporting to school Christopher and his mother was involved in a horrific auto accident. The accident occurred in Sevierville Tennessee. If you ever meet anyone from Sevierville Tennessee they will let you know that it’s the home town of Dolly Parton. Christopher’s mother had a long and painful three (3) month hospital stay while he proceeded on to school. While at the University of Tennessee, Christopher learned the concept of student-athlete. Nothing was given. He was not academically prepared for college, but with the help of counselors and tutors he excelled. He also excelled in the sport of wrestling. He was a member of the 1980 Freshman All-American team, he was a 1984 All-American (4th place finish), and won the 1985 NCAA Championship. His overall record was 105-30 (16 losses as a freshman). One of Christopher’s proudest moments was striking a balance between academics and athletics. In 1985 he won a NCAA championship and also earned his Bachelors of Science in Social Work. Christopher has been inducted into both the New York State and National Wrestling Hall of Fames. For more than thirty-five (35) years Christopher have used wrestling as a tool to help young men accomplish academic and athletic goals. He have held coaching positions at the University of Tennessee, Old Dominion University, Hofstra University, C.W. Post University, Nassau Community College, Freeport High School, Roosevelt High School, and East Meadow High School. As a coach Christopher participated on five (5) National Championship teams, two (2) National Dual Meet Championship teams, forty-four (44) All-Americans, and six (6) individual National Champions. “If the only thing a coach can teach is athletic skills they are falling short of their goals. A coach should be able to mentor and counsel individuals on how to become a better person. I was very fortunate to be coached by two (2) legendary coaches (Terry Haise at Freeport High School and Gray Simons at the University of Tennessee). My involvement in coaching is an attempt to repay what my coaches did for me.” Christopher has coached several Championship teams in both basketball and track for “Youth for Tomorrow” in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) leagues. With the same motivation and passion he has for sports, Christopher carved out a thirty (30) year career in the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department. Presently, Christopher is a retired Nassau County Correction Lieutenant. He states “It was an honor to be a Nassau County Civil Servant. To be able to support my family and serve my community at the same time was ideal. I found working in a correctional center to be comparable to riding a bus. Every now and then a nut gets on, but for the most part people are just trying to get to their destinations. No matter where you’re at if people (inmates, officers, administrators, etc.) are treated with respect they are likely to respond in kind. As a retiree I find that I miss the people (inmates, officers, administrators, etc.) not the job. When you survive experiences with individuals a positive bond is created.” Christopher has always tried to make the world a better place. He married Dawn Blount-Edmond (twenty-one years) and helped produce three (3) Children (Terrance-16, Sarah-20, and Christopher Jr.-29). He is a Grandfather of three (3) Grandchildren (Maleeyah-1, Makenzii-5, and Landon-8). Dawn is also a retired Nassau County Correction Officer. All three (3) of Christopher’s kids are well on their way of becoming great student-athletes and productive citizens. As noted by The Ojays “the world want get no better if we just let it be.” Get involved!
