DeGruccio _________________________________ Gail Bederman, Director Graduate Program in History Notre Dame, Indiana July 2007 UNMADE: AMERICAN MANHOOD IN THE CIVIL WAR ERA Abstract by Michael E. DeGruccio This dissertation is ultimately a story about men trying to tell stories about themselves. The central character driving the narrative is a relatively obscure officer, George W. Cole, who gained modest fame in central New York for leading a regiment of black soldiers under the controversial General Benjamin Butler, and, later, for killing his attorney after returning home from the war. By weaving Cole into overlapping micro-narratives about violence between white officers and black troops, hidden war injuries, the personal struggles of fellow officers, the unbounded ambition of his highest commander, Benjamin Butler, and the melancholy life of his wife Mary Barto Cole, this dissertation fleshes out the essence of the emergent myth of self-made manhood and its relationship to the war era. It also provides connective tissue between the top-down war histories of generals and epic battles and the many social histories about the “common soldier” that have been written consciously to push the historiography away from military brass and Lincoln’s administration. Throughout this dissertation, mediating figures like Cole and those who surrounded him—all of lesser ranks like major, colonel, sergeant, or captain—hem together what has previously seemed like the disconnected experiences of the Union military leaders, and lowly privates in the field, especially African American troops. -

From the start, I knew it would take a steady hand to achieve brave justice and create a more equitable criminal justice system while keeping Queens’ communities safe. On day one, my team and I effectuated new policies, practices and structures designed to create the safest and fairest borough in the city. We immediately began navigating through the challenging implementation of New York State’s long awaited historic bail and discovery reform. I could not have anticipated the challenges to come: those already tumultuous waters deepened in just three months’ time, as a world-wide pandemic hit the city. And not long after, our city transformed yet again in the wake of historic protests and calls for meaningful police reform. This past year, we bravely rose above the turbulent waters. We began building bridges – bridges that will keep our communities safe while embracing new, progressive approaches toward prosecution and the criminal justice system. Inside this book, we will explore the remarkable bridge building we have started, in what has proven to be an unparalleled year: A bridge to Trust – where an emphasis is placed on new progressive leadership, staff training, and a demand for excellence and professionalism throughout a newly structured organization that is designed to further our mission to achieve brave justice. A bridge to Fairness – by instituting new policies that work to address racial and economic disparities, such as reducing prosecution of low-level offenses, utilizing alternatives to cash bail, reducing incarceration, making fair and just plea agreements, and providing more opportunities for rehabilitation and redemption from past violations. -

Specialty Center Partnership Shares Expertise Henrico County, Virginia Page 1 Program Overview All nine high schools within Henrico County Public Schools have specialty centers that enable students to specialize in particular areas of study. While this is a tremendous benefit to students, sometimes it is helpful for students in one specialty center to harness the expertise of students concentrating in another discipline. Two centers – the Advanced Career Education (ACE) Center at Highland Springs and the Center for Communications at Varina High School – paired to create a collaborative four-week project. The project enhanced the educational options for students at Varina’s Center for Communications and Media Relations, using an instructor from the ACE Center. It also enabled the students at the ACE Center at Highland Springs High School to serve as mentors. The Center for Communications and Media Relations at Varina High School offers limited course work in audio production. Because students at Varina wanted the opportunity to learn the history and usability of audio production, the center created a partnership with the ACE Center that allowed one of the ACE Center’s instructors to teach a four-week mini-session on the topic. Problem/Challenge/Situation Faced by Locality Henrico County Public Schools looks for ways to be more innovative and to offer students greater options. This partnership gave students from both schools the opportunity to collaborate. The students worked well together; students in the ACE Center’s Radio Broadcasting class saw the partnership as a way to help others while showing off their hard-earned skills. They also became evangelists for the field, sharing information about an area they find interesting and worthwhile. -
