Professor NL Singh, who has taken care of me for the entire duration of the visit today, members of the academia, last but not the least young graduates from the University, Ladies and Gentlemen.

It gives me a great pleasure to be standing here to address the distinguished invitees, teachers, academicians and the graduating students of MS University, on the occasion of the convocation of the batch graduating from the university in 2018. Given the importance of the event, I am sure that all of you might be having a mixed set of emotions – joy, excitement, nervousness, nostalgia and such others.

A convocation ceremony is among the most unforgettable events in one’s lifetime, as it marks the end of a chapter in life’s journey, giving way to a larger and potentially more challenging phase of career, profession and life. While the lessons imparted by your parents, teachers, mentors and guides until now have prepared you and will continue to support you, you are essentially facing the trials ahead on your own.

I am indeed very happy to be present in your midst today on this momentous occasion, and I hope that my words, that I speak today, will stay with you for a while and will provide some level of motivation and guidance for future endeavours, you are likely to embark upon. I would like to share three things with you, namely, my own experiences in life, a bit about the department in which I am working and a few advices based on my experiences in life.

With regard to my own journey, education and student life, have had a profound impact on me, and on my professional life that followed. My father, a civil engineer, moved from one project to another. Due to this, I had the opportunity to study in schools in Mumbai, Ranchi, and two towns in Gujarat, namely Valsad and Bardoli. In Bardoli, I finally gained continuity, as I spent five years at a

11

stretch and passed eleventh standard examination, then known as SSC. For this, I am grateful to my maternal uncle, at whose residence I grew up in, and who also mentored me as he was a Science Teacher himself. Studying in different schools, in various environments, different teaching methods and the diversity in fellow schoolmates, allowed me a unique experience, where I was constantly unsettled and was required to adjust in a totally new environment. At this point in my life, I realize that repeatedly leaving my comfort zone helped me gain maturity, and I believe, it helped in learning to adapt to difficult situations in life.

This pattern of being unsettled and shifting from one place to another, continued throughout my life, perhaps defined by my fate. Following school education, I studied for a year, in First Year Science, at Mumbai’s Jai hind College.

Subsequently, I returned to Gujarat and studied Mechanical Engineering at MS University, Baroda. Therefore, speaking here today fills me with nostalgia, and indeed, feels like home-coming. As I look back, my five years of study here enabled me to have a thorough understanding of the foundational aspects of engineering studies, and indeed, it is through this that I could clear the interview for BARC training school, which is known to be among the most rigorous.

After joining Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, even throughout my working life, I switched between various fields, from developing computer science related understanding, to stress analysis, to thermal hydraulics analysis, to equipment manufacture, to design and assistance in manufacture for fuel, to reactor system process design, to review of safety analysis and so on. I had a chance to be near the stalwarts such as Dr. R Chidambaram, Dr. and Dr. Sekhar Basu, whose working methodology I could observe. Also received guidance and support of many other seniors within the department, due to which, I could work to the best of my ability in completing the assignments given to me. Truly, with regard to my professional life, I would like to state that working in a variety of fields made me a more complete engineer. Based on this experience, I suggest that whenever you face a situation where you are forced out of your comfort zone, believe that it is an opportunity for growth and a chance to expand your horizon.

However, despite my experiences in various fields, when I became the Director of BARC in February 2016, I realized that my knowledge comprised only about ten percent of the total activities being undertaken at BARC. I will now briefly speak of some aspects of the interesting field of nuclear science exemplifying its societal applications.

While I wish to address the work currently undertaken at BARC, I find that it would feel incomplete without paying homage to the scientists who introduced the very concept of atom and nuclear energy. Much of our progress can be traced back to the discoveries of the golden age of nuclear physics. Rutherford, the father of nuclear physics, worked long hours in a basement laboratory and discovered the nucleus and proton, Bohr agonised for months and formulated the revolutionary quantum theory, Einstein proposed the mass and energy equivalence, Chadwick discovered the neutron,Marie Curie, without access to any formal education studied radioactivity, and made the discovery with Henri Becquerel and Pierre Curie. Hahn and Strassman had the courage to report fission, Leo Szilard conceptualised the chain reaction and Enrico Fermi, considered the pope of Physics, experimentally demonstrated the first nuclear fission chain reaction.

As stated, the basis of nuclear energy, radioactivity itself, was discovered in 1896 by Henri Becquerel, Marie and Pierre Curie, and since then, to the late 1950s, which was when nuclear energy began to be used for generation of electricity, immense efforts were put into the fields of nuclear science and pioneering discoveries were made. Statistics from these years indicate that almost half the Nobel Prizes then were awarded in the field of atomic and nuclear sciences.

We stand on the shoulders of these giants and in India, we owe everything we have achieved so far, to the vision and foresight of the founder,Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the father of the Indian Nuclear Science Programme. Dr. Bhabha, during this exciting period, happened to be conducting research in the laboratories of the United Kingdom. While on vacation in India, he could not go back to Europe

12

due to the Second World War, and therefore established a research facility with a stature matching that of the rest in the world.

In 1956, Dr. Bhabha commissioned the first research reactor in Asia and initiated work in the field of nuclear science and engineering at Atomic Energy Establishment at Trombay, which was later renamed as Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. Dr. Bhabha realized that nuclear energy should be harnessed for the benefits of the Indian populace and therefore initiated the development of the peaceful uses of the atom with several applications in power, agriculture, health-care, food preservation and industrial sectors.

Today, research reactors in BARC produce more than 75 different radioisotopes on a regular basis for various applications. These include applications of radiation technology for variety of societal uses such as urban waste management, nuclear medicine and cancer cure, agricultural uses, etc.

For cancer cure, more than five lakh patients receive diagnostic and therapeutic services at the DAE Cancer Hospitals. Tata Memorial Hospital is one of the foremost hospitals in the world and the Department is in the process of constructing many hospitals at various locations in India. BARC also carries out research in the field of new radiopharmaceuticals.

Further, BARC has developed over 40 improved crop varieties using radiation, which are used by farmers. These include ground nut, mung bean, urid, pigeon pea, cow pea, mustard, sunflower, rice and jute. The enhancements are in various aspects like increased yield; reduced time for maturity; ability to withstand stressed conditions like soil salinity, reduced water availability, pest resistance; etc. Radioisotopes are also used for irradiation of fruits and vegetables for increased shelf life and so on.

For municipal waste treatment, Vadodara has a sludge hygienisation plant called SHRI and based on the operating experience of the same, a 100 Te/day plant is being commissioned at Ahmedabad, which uses radioisotopes.

I have given you a little background information about my career and glimpses of the activities of DAE to draw attention to the fact that given the right attitude, ecosystem and a well-planned programme, achieving world class stature in any field is well within the capacity of any of us.

To give you an example, one of our reactors at Kaiga in the state of Karnataka recently set a world record for continuous operation of 962 days. Youngsters such as you that join our work force and drive the programme forward with energy and enterprise have always had an important role to play in our success stories.

As I reach towards the final part of my address to you, I realize that I have spoken at length about the fields related to sciences, technology and engineering due to the familiarity of my profession and experience. However, I would like to take a moment to appreciate the extensive array of fields encompassed by the MS University. All of us should be thankful to the great visionary Gaikwad family of Baroda, who envisaged and encouraged a formal education the fields of Arts, Fine Arts and Music, which define and express culture, imbibing essential values into the society. The University’s Faculties for Commerce and Business Administration are equally important for progress of the nation and ensuring prosperity for the citizenry.

Friends, as you graduate today from this University, please remember that this day is merely an end to formal institutional learning but at the same time it is the beginning of a life-long process of self- learning Technology is changing rapidly and you will need to constantly learn, unlearn and relearn. My advice is that you should keep your minds open to new ideas and innovations, be nimble in making changes and adjustments and strive to constantly upgrade and refresh your knowledge and skills. We are living in very interesting times and it is up to you to make the best of the great opportunities that lie ahead.

13

It is also important that each of the graduating student makes a realistic analysis of his or her strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, and accordingly chooses a career path best suited to the individual’s temperament. Be wise and judicious in your career choice and the adage-‘If you love what you do, then you don’t have to work a single day in your life’, as said by Marc Anthony, will prove to be true in letter and spirit. In this modern age, it is equally important to possess good planning and communication skills, as these bring clarity and objectivity, not only for defining your own work but also for drawing the best out of your team of co-workers.

At the brink of beginning your professional career, it is natural that well-wishers within your life will give you numerous suggestions and notes of advice. Among such advice, there are two I personally find noteworthy and helpful.

First of all, the importance of hard work cannot be undermined, and the true value of this is indicated by the fact, that through centuries, this has been a standing principle for inspiring figures and success stories.

Secondly, while advancing professionally, I think one should cultivate learning and expertise in at least two fields of your interest, thereby building a greater base in knowledge. These two notes of advice, are aimed to underline a basic principle – That hard work, and higher knowledge, will never go amiss.

Further, as I nearly conclude my note to you today, I would like to take a moment to address certain personal aspects of one’s life, related to your well-being. As the pace of life rapidly increases in the world today, it is of utmost importance that you take good care of your health, no matter where you are placed. In my opinion, for good health you need to eat proper food and do regular exercise. The importance of good health is felt once you are in 40s. If you have not picked up healthy practices it may become a little late to inculcate good practices.

All of us must realize that whatever we are today or hope to be in future is thanks to our parents and teachers. Hence, we must give respect to our parents, teachers, guides and mentors. I must remind you that as you fly away, exploring new horizons, you must take care of your parents to whatever extent possible.

As I near towards the end of my convocation address, I express my deep sense of gratitude towards MS University. I am extremely grateful to MS University for having conferred me the D. Litt degree. It is an extremely humbling feeling to come back to my alma mater and be honoured by the institute where the process of learning had begun. I am also grateful to my family, namely parents, wife and children to have supported me in the difficult times, so that I could work for my organisation and contribute my bit for our great nation.

I must also emphasize here, with deep gratitude, the role that MS University has played in the life of my family. My father studied his First Year Science in the Baroda College and obtained his Civil Engineering degree subsequently from Karachi University in 1942. My elder brother was a medallist in Electrical Engineering from this University. Both of us have stayed in Professor TK Gajjar Hall. Also, my wife completed her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Faculty of Technology. Our family is grateful to the Visionary Gaekwad Family, who has made the city an educational and cultural hub, and I am also grateful that the tradition is still being continued by the Royal Family. My father has a house on Juna Padra Road and I have an intention to come back to my roots when my active career is over.

Before I conclude, I would like to suggest that you consider DAE as one of the options for your professional careers. BARC and DAE are both multidisciplinary organizations involved in a variety of activities. We have opportunities to work in the disciplines of mechanical, electrical, civil, electronics, chemical, architecture, instrumentation, material science. For DAE, equally important are the areas in basic sciences namely physics, chemistry and bioscience. If your interests lie herein, I recommend appearing for the interviews at BARC, so that, should it be apt for you, you may decide accordingly for yourself.

14

Finally, I conclude my address to you, wishing all the graduating students the very best ahead, hoping that the knowledge you have amassed so far and continue to do so, and the values imparted in you, lead you through life’s journey, enabling you to keep growing, securing accolades and achieving fulfilment.

I thank the organisers for giving me this opportunity and honour and also wish you all great satisfaction, happiness and prosperity ahead.

Thank you and Jai Hind.
