The infestation of fruit borer, Cadra cautella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was observed in ber fruits at Fruit Research Farm, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during November-December. About 10% fruits of variety Sanaur were observed to be infested by black larvae making tunnels inside fruits. The pest is widespread in the stored conditions infesting stored cereals, dry fruits in warehouses but as far as field is concerned, this is the first report of field infestation of ber fruits from Punjab as well as in India. It is leaf roller, Psorosticha zizyphi (Stainton); American believed to be originated in Indo-Malaysian region of bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner); castor South-East Asia (Janick and Paull, 2008) and is widely semilooper, Achaea (=Acanthodelta) janata Linnaeus; cultivated from southern Africa to Indian subcontinent, castor capsule borer, Conogethes punctiferalis (Guenee); China, Indomalaya, Australia and Pacific Islands. -

Food grain production increased from 50 mt in 1950- 51 to 257 mt in 2011-12. A food-deficient nation during 1950s and 1960s, it has now not only exportable surplus of certain commodities but is among the top exporters of rice, one of three most important crops. Punjab state has played a leading role in this agricultural transformation. Food grain production in the state was 3.1 mt in 1960-61 and it increased to 29.2 mt during 2011-12. More importantly, productivity of wheat rose from 12 to 51 q/ha and that of paddy from 15 to about 60 q/ha. In fact, rice production increased by nearly 50 times. With 38- 75 and 25-45 % contribution of wheat and rice, respectively, to the central food grain pool for public distribution, the State became mainstay of national food security and came to be known as bread basket of India. The agricultural transformation was technology led. It started with the introduction/development of high yielding dwarf, input responsive varieties of wheat in mid 1960s followed by that of rice and the package of complementary production-protection technologies, the adoption of which ushered in an era of “Green Revolution”. -

Importation of Citrus spp. (Rutaceae) United States fruit from China into the continental Department of Agriculture United States Animal and Plant Health Inspection A Qualitative, Pathway-Initiated Pest Risk Service Assessment January 14, 2020 Version 5.0 Agency Contact: Plant Epidemiology and Risk Analysis Laboratory Center for Plant Health Science and Technology Plant Protection and Quarantine Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service United States Department of Agriculture 1730 Varsity Drive, Suite 300 Raleigh, NC 27606 Pest Risk Assessment for Citrus from China Executive Summary The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) prepared this risk assessment document to examine plant pest risks associated with importing commercially produced fruit of Citrus spp. (Rutaceae) for consumption from China into the continental United States. The risk ratings in this risk assessment are contingent on the application of all components of the pathway as described in this document (e.g., washing, brushing, disinfesting, and waxing). Citrus fruit produced under different conditions were not evaluated in this risk assessment and may have a different pest risk. The proposed species or varieties of citrus for export are as follows: Citrus sinensis (sweet orange), C. grandis (= C. maxima) cv. guanximiyou (pomelo), C. kinokuni (Nanfeng honey mandarin), C. poonensis (ponkan), and C. unshiu (Satsuma mandarin). This assessment supersedes a qualititative assessment completed by APHIS in 2014 for the importation of citrus from China. This assessment is independent of the previous assessment, however it draws from information in the previous document. This assessment is updated to be inline with our current methodology, incorporates important new research, experience, and other evidence gained since 2014.
