Zsuzsanna Dominika Ihar 30th December 2020 2 Abstract The past decade has witnessed the proliferation of numerous ‘greening projects’ across Azerbaijan, aimed at transforming environments vandalised by hydrocarbon exploration and industrial agriculture into biodiverse havens, zones of conservation, and sustainable residential developments. This has been achieved via the uptake of remediation, horticulture, and naturalisation technologies by both state and corporate actors, shifting practices of extraction towards that of an alleged ‘post-extraction’. Here, ecological initiatives designed to cultivate and alter physical environments, as well as material interactions, seep into intimate circulations of life, reconfiguring relations between an array of human, vegetal, and animal beings. With a marked capacity for worldmaking, these initiatives have also become foundational elements in state- sponsored projects concerned with the renewal of national identity, territorial borders, and articulations of a cosmopolitan agenda. This dissertation attends to the ways in which more-than-human life has been mobilised by Azerbaijan's government, particularly for the purposes of nation-making and the creation of post- extractive environments. I look at how these processes have led to the reconfiguration of more- than-human relations and the transformation of everyday life in the name of a bourgeoning form of eco-nationalism. -

Conservation of Talish flora and its exposition at Azerbaijan Central Botanical Garden Dr. Vahid Farzaliyev1, Prof. Oruj Ibadli1, PhD student Rashad Salimov1, PhD student Hajiaga Safarov2 1Central Botanical Garden, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Azerbaijan 2Hyrcan National Park, Azerbaijan The territory of Azerbaijan comprises 86.6 thousand km2. The richness of the flora of the republic is related with its physical-geographical diversity. There are more than 4500 plants in the Azerbaijan flora, being one of the most important areas of the biodiversity in the world. More than 600 of them are endemic and about 250 are relict species. CBG founded in 1934 performs scientific research work on the introduction and climate adaptation of decorative, medicinal, ether-oiled and other plants in order to enrich raw-material bases of plant resources. In initial periods of the establishment of the garden the main objectives of the investigations were to enrich the floristic structure of the garden with new decorative and medicinal plant species as well as to arrange the scientific bases for their cultivation. Concerning these problems the main tendencies were based on the selection of prospective kinds, their introduction and study, aimed at gardening Baku city. While arranging the collection of subtropical plants preference was given also to the plants of the Azerbaijan nature as well as the introduction and study of exotic plants. After the establishment of green-houses and hot-houses the tropic plants came to be studied. The territory is 45.7 hectares. At present there is a plant collection of about 2500 species and forms from the local and abroad flora here. -

The article provides a relevant nomenclature list of Orchidaceae on the Black Sea coast in Krasnodarsky Krai (Russia), with clarification of the taxonomic status of each taxon. Fifty-one taxa (41 species and eleven subspecies) are known in the study area; apart of them, there are ten hybrids. Of them, five taxa are not found anywhere else in Russia, including Cephalanthera epipactoides, Epipactis euxina (endemic), E. leptochila subsp. neglecta, E. pontica, and Serapias orientalis subsp. feldwegiana. Two taxa (Epipactis condensata and Ophrys mammosa subsp. caucasica) slightly exceed the boundaries of the study area. Data on the distribution, occurrence, and association of species with plant communities are provided. Most taxa are more or less represented in forest communities. Only eight species are confined to grassland communities and ecotonic habitats. For 19 taxa, favourable conditions seem to be in anthropogenically disturbed habitats, preferring clearings under power lines, sides of forest roads, deposits, hay meadows, and dendroparks. Data on new locations and the state of the most threatened orchid species on the Black Sea coast in Krasnodarsky Krai are presented. -

Project Document GEF Medium-Size Project (MSP) Government of Armenia United Nations Development Programme PIMS 3814 PIMS 3814: Adaptation to Climate Change in Mountain Forest Ecosystems of Armenia Brief description: Armenia’s forest ecosystems have been identified as a global conservation priority inasmuch as they fall under the Caucasus-Anatolian-Hyrcanian Temperate Forests Ecoregion that has been listed by WWF as a Global 200 Ecoregion, and by Conservation International as a biodiversity hotspot. The high level of biodiversity is one of the most important features of the Syunik region in south-eastern Armenia. The region’s ecosystems form part of the eco-corridor of the Eastern Lesser Caucasus that has been identified as a conservation priority by the Ecoregional Conservation Plan for the Caucasus. Recognizing the need to protect the unique biodiversity of this region, the government has established five specially protected areas, and is in the process of establishing three others. This region, however, has also been identified as a critically vulnerable region of the country, especially in terms of the risk posed by climate change to its unique mountain forest ecosystems. This conclusion comes from the first comprehensive vulnerability and adaptation assessment undertaken for Armenia under the aegis of its First and Second National Communications to the UNFCCC. Under the business-as-usual scenario, climate risks will not be taken into account in the forest and biodiversity sector, primarily due to the prevalence of certain key barriers
