Deeper Look Into the Land of the Bible Jan 2019 Itinerary-3 A FULLY OWNED SUBSIDIARY OF ISRAM WORLD OF TRAVEL U.S.A DEEPER LOOK INTO THE LAND OF THE BIBLE: 1 January- 12 January 2019 Led by Dr Paul ShoCkley and Pastor Dwain Camp DAY 1 January 1 TUESDAY: DEPARTURE: Our spiritual adventure begins when we depart from the US for our long-awaited destination on Turkish Airlines #34 from Houston to Istanbul at 8:55 p.m. arriving at 5:35 p.m. Then, continue on Turkish #864 at 8:35 p.m. landing in Tel Aviv at 9:45 p.m. DAY 2 January 2: WEDNESDAY: ARRIVAL: ARRIVAL: Evening arrival into Tel Aviv. We will be met and assisted through customs and introduced to our guide and driver. Overnight: Dan Panorama, Tel Aviv DAY 3 January 3: THURSDAY: JAFFA, CAESAREA, MT. CARMEL & AKKO JAFFA: The City of Jonah and Simon the Tanner; see its ancient port and the artists’ colony around it. CAESAREA: We will explore the amazing excavations that include the Roman Theater, harbor, hippodrome, and palace-all built by Herod the Great in the days of Jesus. We will also walk through the crusader fortress. MOUNT CARMEL: View the western end of the Jezreel Valley from atop Mount Carmel where Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal. AKKO: We will drive through Akko and briefly take some pics of this coastal crusader city which served as one of Israel’s key ports over much of its long history. Overnight: Rimonim Hotel Palm Beach (B/D) DAY 4 January 4 FRIDAY: ROSH HANIKRA, HAZOR, DAN & CAESAREA PHILIPPI CAVES OF ROSH HANIKRA: These magnificent caves are found in the northern tip of Israel. HAZOR: We leave Akko and travel to this strategic ancient site located on the International Highway between Egypt and Mesopotamia, where the decisive battle for the conquest by Joshua was won. DAN NATURE RESERVE: Dan, is a city mentioned in Bible, is described as the northernmost city of the Kingdom of Israel, and belonging to the tribe of Dan. GAMLA NATURE RESERVE: Known sometimes as the “Masada of the North, Gamla is most famous for its strong defense against the Romans in the Jewish revolt in AD 66. SEA OF GALILEE: We end the day by visiting the ancient Galilee boat and board an ancient-style boat for worship on the Sea of Galilee. Overnight: Rimonim Galei Kinneret (B/D) DAY 6 January 6: SUNDAY: JESUS’ GALILEAN MINISTRY MAGDALA: See the oldest excavated in Galilee and one of seven from the first century in all of Israel. MT. ARBEL: A breathtaking panorama of the Sea of Galilee and the biblical sites of Jesus’ public ministry. Take time to worship God from this site on Sunday morning. MT. OF BEATITUDES Where Christ delivered the Sermon on the Mount CAPERNAUM: This city witnessed many of Jesus’ miracles PRIMACY OF PETER: We will take some time to consider Jesus’ restoration of the Apostle Peter on the edge of the Sea of Galilee. GOLAN HEIGHTS WINERY: We will end our day with a special tour to this wonderful winery just north of the Sea of Galilee. Overnight Rimonim Galei Kinneret (B/D) DAY 7 January 7: MONDAY: SOUTH OF SEA OF GALILEE & THE DEAD SEA EXPERIENCE JERICHO: We will Galilee and travel down the Transjordan Valley. We will pass by the city where the walls came tumbling down. QUMRAN: The Dead Sea scrolls were discovered here. EN GEDI: One of the places where David encountered Saul. MASADA: We will ride a cable car up to Herod’s lavish palace/fortress where Jewish zealots made their final stand in their revolt against Rome. BEERSHEBA: If time and strength allows, we will travel to southernmost city of Israel in the Hebrew Bible; the place where Abraham built an altar to the Lord. BET GUVRIN: We will explore the unique Bell Caves carved beneath the earth BETH SHEMESH: This is where Samson lived and the Philistines returned the Ark of the Covenant to Israel ELAH VALLEY: Here we will re-live David and Goliath’s battle. JERUSALEM We will journey up to this magnificent city Overnight: Dan Panorama, Jerusalem (B/D) DAY 9 January 9: WEDNESDAY: TEMPLE MOUNT AND CITY OF DAVID TEMPLE MOUNT: View the ancient site of the Temple, now holding the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aksa Mosque SOUTHERN TEMPLE STEPS: A place where you can actually say, “I walked where Jesus walked.” Here we will take time to worship corporately. CITY OF DAVID: Starting from King David’s palace, we will see Warren’s Shaft, the waterspout through which David’s forces climbed to capture the city, and the Pool of Siloam where the blind man, after encountering Jesus, washed the mud off his eyes and received his site. Those interested can also walk through Hezekiah’s Tunnel. WESTERN WALL TUNNEL: TBA HEZEKIAH’S WALL Wall & THE CARDO: We will wind through the narrow streets and colorful bazaars of the Old City, stopping along the way to discover history that proves our faith. JEWISH QUARTER: Take time to explore and shop the Jewish Quarter UPPER ROOM: The traditional site of the Last Supper CAIAPHAS’ HOUSE: Reflect upon the trials of Jesus Christ. Overnight: Dan Panorama, Jerusalem (B/D) DAY 10 January 10: THURSDAY OLD JERUSALEM MT OF OLIVES: At this panoramic vista, we are reminded of what Christ saw as He looked over the city. DOMINUS FLEVIT: We will walk down Palm Sunday Road and stop at the place where Jesus wept over Jerusalem. GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE: Here, amongst the ancient olive trees, is where Jesus was betrayed. We will take time to pray at this sacred area. POOL OF BETHSEDA: The pool where Jesus healed a man ST. ANNE’S CHURCH: Sing in this beautiful crusader church.     ISRAEL 14 – 28 March 2009 A birdwatching trip report by Owain Gabb1 and Tim Sykes2 Purpose of this report This is a summary of a fortnight of birding in Israel. During our trip we travelled from Northern to Southern Israel, beginning at Ma’agan Mikhael on the Mediterranean coast, then moving to Mount Hermon on the Syrian Border, before working our way gradually down through Hula, the Golan Heights and the Dead Sea Region for an extended stay in the Eilat area. We found the Israeli people to be very friendly, and despite the recent escalation of hostilities in and around Gaza, there was very little evidence of a country at war3. We saw many of the species we had hoped to, a few we did not expect, experienced fantastic scenery and stayed in some reasonably priced and very relaxing accommodation. Israel is a very dynamic country in birding terms, and we saw much evidence of environmental change and sanitisation during our stay4, with the result that some well known sites have now declined significantly in terms of interest. We hope that the following account, which includes detailed information on birds, sites and accommodation, provides other birders planning an Israel trip a good basis from which to develop an itinerary. Getting around We booked two return tickets from London Heathrow to Tel Aviv (Ben Gurion airport) with British Airways. The total cost per person was £273.30. For anyone planning a trip to Southern Israel only, it is probably worth looking into flying into Jordan, taking a bus across the border and hiring a car in Eilat.

Here we visit Tel Beersheva, one of the most impressive and ancient fortified cities of the Kingdom of Judah. As we travel we will discuss the importance of Moses and the Exodus from Egypt in Jewish religious thinking and its influence on Jesus and the Gospels. We will then visit the home of one of the founders of Israel David Ben Gurion at Kibbutz Sde Boker. In the afternoon we’ll stop at the Carmey Avdat Wine Estate along the ancient Spice Route, before checking into our hotel. Overnight: Ramon Inn, Day 2: Monday, April 30th The Way of the Wilderness: Biblical Spirituality We begin today looking over the spectacular Ramon crater. Here we consider the true location of Mount Sinai and study the geology of the area at the Mitzpe Ramon Visitors Centre. Traveling through the wilderness of Zin where Moses struck the rock in disobedience we discuss the lessons we can learn from this incident today. In the afternoon we stop at Tel Arad, a pre-Abrahamic major city and later an Israelite fortress. The current discussions on a layout for a peace park provide a description of the mechanisms that will control and maintain the park, but fail to provide the insights for how to keep these mechanisms functioning in one, five or ten years into the future. This paper argues that given the lack of stabilizing factors in an Israeli-Syrian partnership, even if negotiations succeed and an agreement is signed, the probability of failure during implementation is high. This work will present options that can increase the acceptability of the park concept to both parties and provide measures to sustain the agreement in the future years. The work will explore the enhancement of a peace park design, by including renewable energy components and tourist activities. These additions to the general peace park concept will generate benefits to a peace treaty: the peace park will be self-sustainable and eventually profitable; the renewable energy aspect of the park idea will add an important extra dimension to the peace effort, contributing not just to regional peacemaking but also to environmental sustainability; finally, it is argued that such additions will significantly improve the chances of reaching an agreement in the first place.

Lynch, Ph.D. iii ABSTRACT In this dissertation I explore how people in the eastern Mediterranean responded to imperial rule under the Achaemenid Persians (539-331 BCE) and Alexander the Great and his Greco-Macedonian successors, the Ptolemies (c. 300-201 BCE) and Seleucids (c. 201-104 BCE). To get an intimate perspective on these responses, I approach them through the recently excavated Persian and Hellenistic Administrative building (hereafter PHAB) at Tel Kedesh in the Upper Galilee of modern day Israel. The PHAB was in use under the Persians, the Ptolemies, and the Seleucids before being abandoned after the Seleucids were defeated in a nearby battle against a Judean army led by Jonathan Maccabee in 143 BCE. People moved north from the Central Hills a few years after this battle and inhabited the site of the semi-ruined building as squatters for a generation. From the vantage of the PHAB, it is possible to consider how economies and lifestyles changed against the dramatic historical backdrop of Alexander’s conquest of the Persian Empire, the five Syrian Wars fought between his Ptolemaic and Seleucid successors over the southern Levant in the 3rd century, and the Maccabean Revolt against Seleucid rule in the mid 2nd century.
