Israel: The Holy Land & Timeless Cultures 2017 EXTEND YOUR TRIP PRE-TRIP Jordan POST-TRIP Palestinian Discovery Traveling in Israel is to journey through land that is many things to many people. It’s a center of faith for three of the world’s great religions. A strategic crucible of modern world politics. A land of stunning natural beauty. A complex ethnic tapestry. An archaeologist’s dream. A realm of transcendent land- scapes. A place that has resonance for any traveler seeking answers to the great spiritual matters of our times. While many tours focus on one religious tradition or another, we follow a multicultural pathway through Israel’s many layers of religious heritage. And we explore contemporary issues, too—inviting you to peer behind the headlines to meet Palestinians and Israelis, native Sabras and Eastern European immigrants, Jews, Muslims, Christians, and Druze. If you are drawn to destinations that challenge your preconcep- tions, or even inspire some soul-searching, come feel the power of this ancient place—at least once in your life. Itinerary subject to change. For information or reservations, call toll-free 1-800-955-1925. DETAILED ITINERARY An important word about your adventure This is an adventure travel trip. Part of the adventure is the possibility that things may change which make it impossible for us to follow this trip itinerary exactly. When we are confronted with changing circumstances, this itinerary is the one we strive to follow. But it’s important for you to know in advance that we may not be able to follow this plan verbatim. The sequence of places visited may vary. The hotels mentioned on your hotel contact sheet are not guaran- teed. When we are forced to make variations, we make every attempt to use facilities that are equivalent in quality, but this is not always possible. This trip is designed for people who want a different kind of travel experience. It emphasizes active exploration and close cultural contact, not gourmet food or deluxe accommodations. We seek out unusual experiences, in out-of-the-way places where ordinary tours don’t go. To fully enjoy this trip, you should be in good health and enjoy an active lifestyle—and flexibility is important. Bring an open curiosity, an adventurous spirit and a willingness to adapt and make the best of every situation. After all, that is the definition of adventure. WINE CATALOGUE GOLAN HEIGHTS WINERY Soil. Topography. Climate. Three distinct grape-growing conditions for producing quality wines on an international level. In Israel, these optimal conditions exist in the Golan Heights. As in other premier wine regions worldwide, everything in this magical strip of land begins with the right conditions, a combination of volcanic basaltic soil, suit- able topography and high altitude resulting in cool climate found in the Golan. This is what gives the Golan Heights its second name: “Wine Country.” Over the years, the distinctive wines of the Golan Heights Winery have become world-renowned, winning dozens of awards at prestigious international competitions. Indeed, the Winery has placed Israel on the world wine map. Since its founding in 1983, the Golan Heights Winery has created four leading brands – Yarden, Gamla, Hermon and Golan. Today, it is considered Israel’s leading winery when it comes to wine quality, technological innovation, and new variety development. The Winery has played a significant role in nurturing the country’s current wine culture, and has altered the way Israeli wines are perceived worldwide. • ISRAEL 14 – 28 March 2009 a Birdwatching Trip Report by Owain Gabb1 and Tim Sykes2 Purpose of This Report This Is a Summary of a Fortnight of Birding in Israel
ISRAEL 14 – 28 March 2009 A birdwatching trip report by Owain Gabb1 and Tim Sykes2 Purpose of this report This is a summary of a fortnight of birding in Israel. During our trip we travelled from Northern to Southern Israel, beginning at Ma’agan Mikhael on the Mediterranean coast, then moving to Mount Hermon on the Syrian Border, before working our way gradually down through Hula, the Golan Heights and the Dead Sea Region for an extended stay in the Eilat area. We found the Israeli people to be very friendly, and despite the recent escalation of hostilities in and around Gaza, there was very little evidence of a country at war3. We saw many of the species we had hoped to, a few we did not expect, experienced fantastic scenery and stayed in some reasonably priced and very relaxing accommodation. Israel is a very dynamic country in birding terms, and we saw much evidence of environmental change and sanitisation during our stay4, with the result that some well known sites have now declined significantly in terms of interest. We hope that the following account, which includes detailed information on birds, sites and accommodation, provides other birders planning an Israel trip a good basis from which to develop an itinerary. Getting around We booked two return tickets from London Heathrow to Tel Aviv (Ben Gurion airport) with British Airways. The total cost per person was £273.30. For anyone planning a trip to Southern Israel only, it is probably worth looking into flying into Jordan, taking a bus across the border and hiring a car in Eilat.

Founded soon after the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000, CWP today is a leading voice against the occupation, committed to feminist principles of organization and Jewish-Palestinian partnership, in a relentless struggle for a just society. CWP continuously voices a critical position against militarism and advocates for radical social and political change. Its work includes direct action and public campaigning in Israel and internationally, a pioneering investigative project exposing the occupation industry, outreach to Israeli audiences and political empowerment of women across communities and capacity-building and support for grassroots activists and initiatives for peace and justice. www.coalitionofwomen.org | [email protected] Who Profits from the Occupation is a research center dedicated to exposing the commercial involvement of Israeli and international companies in the continued Israeli control over Palestinian and Syrian land. Currently, we focus on three main areas of corporate involvement in the occupation: the settlement industry, economic exploitation and control over population. Who Profits operates an online database which includes information concerning companies that are commercially complicit in the occupation. Moreover, the center publishes in-depth reports and flash reports about industries, projects and specific companies. Who Profits also serves as an information center for queries regarding corporate involvement in the occupation – from individuals and civil society organizations working to end the Israeli occupation and to promote international law, corporate social responsibility, social justice and labor rights.

A Renewable Energy Peace Park in the Golan as a Framework to an Israeli-Syrian Agreement AUTHOR Yehuda Greenfield-Gilat June 2009 UNITED STATES INSTITUTE OF PEACE 1200 17th Street NW, Suite 200 Washington, DC 20036-3011 www.usip.org USIP Peace Briefing: Renewable Energy Peace Park in the Golan as a Framework to an Israeli-Syrian Agreement INTRODUCTION The widely discussed Syrian-Israeli peace park concept is rooted in the assumption that Syrian and Israeli "good will" for cooperation is sufficient to mobilize a long- lasting, firm peace treaty between the two countries. The current discussions on a layout for a peace park provide a description of the mechanisms that will control and maintain the park, but fail to provide the insights for how to keep these mechanisms functioning in one, five or ten years into the future. This paper argues that given the lack of stabilizing factors in an Israeli-Syrian partnership, even if negotiations succeed and an agreement is signed, the probability of failure during implementation is high. This work will present options that can increase the acceptability of the park concept to both parties and provide measures to sustain the agreement in the future years. The work will explore the enhancement of a peace park design, by including renewable energy components and tourist activities. These additions to the general peace park concept will generate benefits to a peace treaty: the peace park will be self-sustainable and eventually profitable; the renewable energy aspect of the park idea will add an important extra dimension to the peace effort, contributing not just to regional peacemaking but also to environmental sustainability; finally, it is argued that such additions will significantly improve the chances of reaching an agreement in the first place.
