The Occupied Syrian Golan – A Brief Geographical Overview The Occupied Syrian Golan is a small mountainous region in the south-western corner of Syria which has been under Israeli occupation since June 1967. Comprising of mountainous peaks and plateaus, it has long been viewed as a strategic military territory, with the imposing peak of Mt. Hermon, at 2,224 metres, providing a dominant perspective of southern Syria, southern Lebanon and much of northern Israel. Despite its relatively small size, the region has an overall landmass of 1,860 sq. km and its unique terrain is unrivalled within the state of Israel.1 As such, it is coveted not only for its elevated position but also for the healthy water sources that surround Mt.

    Adalah’s Newsletter, Volume 63, August 2009 The New Israeli Land Reform August 2009 Background On 3 August 2009, the Knesset (Israeli parliament) passed the Israel Land Administration (ILA) Law (hereinafter the “Land Reform Law”), with 61 Members of Knesset (MKs) voting in favor of the law and 45 MKs voting against it. The new land reform law is wide ranging in scope: it institutes broad land privatization; permits land exchanges between the State and the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet Le-Israel) (hereinafter - the “JNF”), the land of which is exclusively reserved for the Jewish people; allows lands to be allocated in accordance with "admissions committee" mechanisms and only to candidates approved by Zionist institutions working solely on behalf of the Jewish people; and grants decisive weight to JNF representatives in a new Land Authority Council, which would replace the Israel Land Administration (ILA). The land privatization aspects of the new law also affect extremely prejudicially properties confiscated by the state from Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel; Palestinian refugee property classified as “absentee” property; and properties in the occupied Golan Heights and in East Jerusalem. Land Privatization Policy The law stipulates that 800,000 dunams of land currently under state-control will be privatized, enabling private individuals to acquire ownership rights in them. Looking ahead, the retail energy space presents additional expansion opportunities. Here in the US, we are working to enter additional deregulated markets while scouting for additional acquisition opportunities. Globally, competitive energy supply is also a signifi cant growth sector. We are closely monitoring developments in several overseas markets to identify opportunities that meet our expansion criteria. Genie Retail Energy also made signifi cant progress to address legal and regulatory challenges. We enter 2017 with signifi cantly less uncertainty in those areas compared to the year ago. At GOGAS, we have narrowed our operational focus to our Afek exploratory oil project in Northern Israel, suspending operations at other units and decommissioning our AMSO oil shale project in Colorado. Afek has drilled fi ve wells in the southern portion of its license area and completed well fl ow tests on two of those wells.

(Crédit : Asaf Ben-Zvi) Gracia Mendes Nasi, connue également sous le nom de Dona Gracia, était l’une des femmes les plus riches de l’Europe du 16e siècle. Née en 1510 dans une famille de Marranes portugais – ces Juifs baptisés chrétiens par force – elle avait épousé un oncle très riche à l’âge de 18 ans. Quand il est mort, moins d’une décennie plus tard, elle avait découvert qu’il avait fait d’elle son unique héritière. Et finalement, en raison d’une querelle familiale sur l’héritage, elle avait été dénoncée par sa sœur pour sa pratique secrète du judaïsme, et avait été incarcérée. C’était alors l’époque de l’Inquisition, une époque d’immense péril pour les Juifs d’Europe. Et après la libération de Dona Gracia, cette dernière était parvenue à persuader le sultan turc de rebâtir la ville de Tibériade, autrefois grandiose. Là-bas, elle avait érigé une implantation juive pour y accueillir les réfugiés fuyant l’Espagne et le Portugal et avait mené d’autres belles actions : elle a construit des écoles, des synagogues, et a assumé une mission de mécénat pour les artistes juifs. Et il n’est donc guère surprenant qu’en plus d’un hôtel qui porte le nom de cette grande dame et d’un musée qui raconte sa vie, Tibériade s’enorgueillisse d’une forêt Dona Gracia, qui offre un panorama unique pour admirer les eaux scintillantes du lac.
