  • Architectural and Functional/Liturgical Development of the North-West Church in Hippos (Sussita) 148 JOLANTA MŁYNARCZYK
CENTRE D’ARCHÉOLOGIE MÉDITERRANÉENNE DE L’ACADÉMIE POLONAISE DES SCIENCES ÉTUDES et TRAVAUX XXII 2008 JOLANTA MŁYNARCZYK Architectural and Functional/Liturgical Development of the North-West Church in Hippos (Sussita) 148 JOLANTA MŁYNARCZYK In July 2007, the eighth season of excavations was completed at the so-called North- West Church at Hippos (Sussita), one of the cities of the Decapolis. The church was explored by a Polish team within the framework of an international project devoted to the unearth- ing of the remains of that Graeco-Roman and Byzantine-Umayyad period town, headed by Arthur Segal of the University of Haifa. Despite the fact that as many as four churches have so far been uncovered at Sussita,1 it is only the North-West Church (NWC) that became one of the examples discussed by A. Ovadiah in his paper listing Byzantine-peri- od churches excavated within the borders of the present-day Israel, in which architectural changes apparently refl ect some liturgical modifi cations.2 Unfortunately, A. Ovadiah’s interpretation of the NWC (published in 2005) not only was based on the reports of the early seasons of our fi eldwork (2002, 2003), but also proved to be rather superfi cial one, a fact which calls for a careful re-examination of the excavation data. Perhaps the most important fact about the NWC is that this has been one of rare in- stances attested for the region of a church that was still active as such during the Um- ayyad period. Archaeological contexts sealed by the earthquake of A.D.

ISRAEL JOURNAL OF ENTOMOLOGY, Vol. 43, 2013, pp. 95-124 The scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of oak trees (Fagaceae: Quercus spp.) in Israel MALKIE SPODEK1,2, YAIR BEN-DOV1 AND ZVI MENDEL1 1Department of Entomology, Volcani Center, Agricultural Research Organization, POB 6, Bet Dagan 50250, Israel 2Department of Entomology, Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, POB 12, Rehovot 76100, Israel Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea) of four species of oaks (Fagaceae: Quercus) in Israel namely, Q. boissieri, Q. calliprinos, Q. ithaburensis, and Q. look were collected and identified from natural forest stands during the period 2010-2013. A total of twenty-seven species were determined from nine scale insect families: Asterolecaniidae (3 species), Coccidae (3), Di- aspididae (7), Eriococcidae (3), Kermesidae (6), Kuwaniidae (1), Mono- phlebidae (1), Pseudococcidae (2), and Putoidae (1). Six of these species represent new records for Israel and five are identified to the genus level. Kuwaniidae is a new family record for Israel. Species that were previously collected or recorded on oaks in Israel are listed and discussed. Information is given about host trees and global distribution. The majority of the spe- cies reported here are monophagous or stenophagous and they appear to be non-pestiferous to the oak trees in Israel. General traits that describe each scale insect family in the field are provided, together with an identification key to aid in the determination of slide-mounted specimens into families represented in this study. KEY WORDS: Scale insect, Coccoidea, oak trees, Quercus, forest, survey, monophagous, univoltine, Mediterranean, Israel INTRODUCTION The genus Quercus (Fagaceae) has a rich and diverse arthropod fauna associated with it (Southwood, 1961; Southwood et al., 2005).

  • Israel National Trail Passport
Israel National Trail Passport The Israel Trails Committee issues Israel Trail Passports, allowing hikers to collect stamps as they reach points of interest along the trail. Accumulating stamps along the way intensifies the experience, leaving hikers with a souvenir of their adventures on the trail. ITC architect Gal Hart conceived the idea for the Israel National Trail Passport during his studies in the architecture department at Bezalel Art and design Institute in Jerusalem. He developed the concept for his final project, including a map with twelve stopping points. Each stopping point highlights a key architectural value. Hart presented his concept to the ITC and designed the passport and the stamps. There are now 27 stops where the people walking the Isreal National Trail can stamp the passport. Stamping Points include: 1. Israel Trail Committee. 2. Bet Ussishkin, Kibbutz Dan 3. Yanay Shaham, Kibbutz Dan, Trail Angel 4. Shlomi Flex, Kibbutz Yiron, Trail Angel 5. Mount Meron Field School 6.
