Many of the sources posed problems concerning numerical data on immi gration, especially for the months leading up to the end of the British Mandate, January-April 1948, and the first few months of the state, May August 1948. The researchers point out that 7,574 immigrant data cards are missing from the records and believe this to be due to the 'circumstances of the times'. Records are complete from September 1948 onward, and an important population census was held in November 1948. A parallel record ing system conducted by the Jewish Agency, which continued to operate after that of the Mandatory Government, provided us with statistical data for immigration during 1948-9 and made it possible to analyse the part taken by the Holocaust survivors. -

Beth Jacob Congregation Partners with Yachad Ohr Torah Stone is extremely appreciative to Rabbi Kalman Topp and the Beth Jacob community for partnering with our Yachad Program in supporting the work of Chaim Possick, Jewish Cultural Facilitator in Katzrin, the capital of the Golan Heights. Beth Jacob's support of his Jewish identity initiatives makes a direct impact upon a challenged Israeli society, in which an alarming number of Jews are disconnected from their Jewish heritage. Recent Highlights: Coming of Age with Meaning The Bar or Bat Mitzvah represents a major milestone in traditional Jewish life, but since Israeli teens from secular families are, by and large, not connected to any kind of synagogue, the milestone is traditionally marked by a big party or a trip abroad - with little (if any) reflection on its significance. In order to provide secular children with an opportunity to learn about the pivotal lifecycle event and celebrate it with meaning, Chaim created a seven-week program for the 45 seventh graders at Gamla, the local secular school. It is a testament to his warm and unthreatening approach that the school's administration not only welcomes his program with open arms, but enables him to expand upon it from year to year. "The program is fun and informative, not at all coercive," explains Dalia Yarkoni, one of the Seventh Grade homeroom teachers. "Chaim provides the students with a connection to their heritage and a sense of themselves as links in the longtime Jewish chain – with ramifications not only for their present lives, but for their future, as well. -

INTRODUCTION RECOVERING A REPRESSED PAS T On February 12, 2013, Ruth Calderon was invited to the dais of the Israeli Knesset to deliver her firs t speech as a newly-elected member of parliament.1 The speech was unlike any given in the his tory of deliberations in Israel’s legislature in that it consis ted primarily of her reading and interpreting a Talmudic s tory. The Talmudic s tory that Calderon read before the Knesset, firs t in the original Aramaic and then in Hebrew translation, was, as is typical of these s tories, very brief: Rabbi Rahumi s tudied under Rava in Mehoza. He would regularly come home to his wife on the eve of Yom Kippur. One day [on the eve of Yom Kippur] the topic [he was s tudying] drew him in. His wife anticipated him, “He is coming. He is coming.” He did not come. She began to grieve. She shed a tear from her eye. He was sitting on a roof. The roof collapsed under him, and he died. (B. Ketubot 62b)2 The s tory reflects what appears to have been a common practice among rabbinic scholars in Babylonia: to absent themselves from home for long periods of time to s tudy Torah. The author of the s tory expresses his disapproval of this cus tom by portraying empathically the emotional s tress experienced by Rabbi Rahumi’s wife when he was so engaged in Torah s tudy that he forgot to return home for the sacred holiday. ISRAEL 2015 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Israel is a multiparty parliamentary democracy. Although it has no constitution, the parliament, the unicameral 120-member Knesset, has enacted a series of “Basic Laws” that enumerate fundamental rights. Certain fundamental laws, orders, and regulations legally depend on the existence of a “state of emergency,” which has been in effect since 1948. Under the Basic Laws, the Knesset has the power to dissolve the government and mandate elections. The nationwide Knesset elections in March, considered free and fair, resulted in a coalition government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the security services. (An annex to this report covers human rights in the occupied territories. This report deals with human rights in Israel and the Israeli- occupied Golan Heights.) During the year according to Israeli Security Agency (ISA, also known as Shabak) statistics, Palestinians committed 47 terror attacks (including stabbings, assaults, shootings, projectile and rocket attacks, and attacks by improvised explosive devices (IED) within the Green Line that led to the deaths of five Israelis and one Eritrean, and two stabbing terror attacks committed by Jewish Israelis within the Green Line and not including Jerusalem. According to the ISA, Hamas, Hezbollah, and other militant groups fired 22 rockets into Israel and in 11 other incidents either planted IEDs or carried out shooting or projectile attacks into Israel and the Golan Heights. A Guide to Birding in Israel & Trip Report for 25th April – 5th May 2019 Trip Report author: Steve Arlow [email protected] Blog for further images: https://stevearlowsbirding.blogspot.com/ Purpose of this Trip Report / Guide I have visited Israel numerous times since spring since 2012 and have produced birding trip reports for each of those visits however for this report I have collated all of my previous useful information and detail, regardless if they were visited this year or not. Those sites not visited this time around are indicated within the following text. However, if you want to see the individual trip reports the below are detailed in Cloudbirders. March 2012 March 2013 April – May 2014 March 2016 April – May 2016 March 2017 April – May 2018 Summary of the Trip This year’s trip in late April into early May was not my first choice for dates, not even my second but it delivered on two key target species. Originally I had wanted to visit from mid-April to catch the Levant Sparrowhawk migration that I have missed so many previous times before however this coincided with Passover holidays in Israel and accommodation was either not available (Lotan) or bonkersly expensive (Eilat) plus the car rental prices were through the roof and there would be holiday makers everywhere. I decided then to return in March and planned to take in the Hula (for the Crane spectacle), Mt. Hermon, the Golan, the Beit She’an Valley, the Dead Sea, Arava and Negev as an all-rounder. However I had to cancel the day I was due to travel as an issue arose at home that I just had to be there for.
