O F S P E C I A L I N TE R E S T RESPECT LIFE

“Take these out of here and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” In the holy according to John, 2:13-25, Jesus turns the temple area upside down to rid it of farm animals for sale, as well as the moneychangers who set up shop. In a fallen nature, they chose riches over a relationship with the Lord. The temple also represents our lives and our relationship with Christ. A moral bankruptcy can begin to overshadow our hearts, when we make less time for prayer and the care for others and more time for worldly goals and desires. Learn, Act, Connect and Pray-This Len-ten season, let’s reevaluate our priorities individually and as fami-lies. Do we prayerfully consider how to spend Sunday, the Lord’s day? We are reminded that Jesus came to purify our hearts that we may be a home for God. By going to confession to “dust off our hearts” and committing to the dignity of life for others, through sup-portive prayer and actions such as: tutoring a child in need of help, comforting someone who has experienced loss or volunteering in a shelter, we can love God with all our hearts, and our neighbor as ourself. Message from Father Steve,

We are taught from an early age to be reverent and respectful when inside the Church building. There is a ritual, dipping our hand in holy water (before covid-19), genuflecting, and sitting quietly. As believers, we know that the true presence of Jesus is found in the consecrated, host. "Transubstantiation” (Latin: transsubstantiatio; Greek: μετουσίωσις ) is, according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, "the change of the whole substance of bread into the Cleansing Temples. After turning water to substance of the Body of Christ and the whole substance of wine into wine at Cana, Jesus goes to the substance of the Blood of Christ." (CCC) today and cleans out the Temple. This can For some members of the faithful who have chosen to attend other be a helpful metaphor for our Lenten Churches, I often hear that they miss the true presence of Jesus in the retreat. We say that we are temples of the Eucharist. There communion is offered as a sign of unity, a sign of the . How, then, are we to act? The body, but not the true presence we experience during Holy Mass. Book of Exodus is clear. It speaks of right When I show our Children around the Church, I always ask, as we approach the Tabernacle, "how do you know that Jesus is present with conduct in all areas of com-mon life. us?" I explain that yes, he is all around us, but we know, through the ●What needs cleaning in my thinking and Candle, that Jesus dwells here. The only day that the speech? He parked his car who are also cleaning up? and started toward the front entrance. Another car pulled up nearby, and the irritat-ed driver said to him, "I always park there. You took my place!" The visitor went inside and found that Sunday School was PLEASE NOTE: During cold weather, the about to begin. He found an adult class, went inside, and sat down. The visitor was somewhat dis-tressed by this rude welcome but This is due to your skin being exposed to the said nothing. After Sunday School, the visitor went into the sanctuary cold air. Please check your temperature and sat down in an empty pew. Within moments another member before you arrive for Mass. walked up to him and said, "That's where I always sit. You took my place!" The visitor was troubled but said nothing. Later, as the congregation was praying for Christ to be present with them, the visitor stood, and his appearance began to change. Scars became visible on his hands and his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him and cried out, "What hap-pened to you?" The visitor replied, "I took your place." Some things that happen in the church are silly. Some things are downright scandalous. Some things may even be sacrilegious. But the Church is still the body of Christ, and it was for the Church that Christ died. Our action is not just extended to the reverence we experience with God's presence but in each other. The word, Transubstantia-tion signifies an action. Remember to extend that action into your daily lives, knowing that God walks with us, is in us, and dwells within the souls of believers.
