With this expansion, Pacific Collections better serves Aquarium Pguests and provides an improved retail experience. The out- er wall features a large-scale glass photo mural of a local kelp forest off one of the Channel Islands. The image was captured by underwater photographer Jim Hellemn. The remodel increased the store’s square footage from 4,000 to about 6,000 square feet and also improved the store's over- all look and feel. Improvements were made to the building’s energy efficiency, and materials manufactured in the United States were used. The store features new flooring, lighting supplemented by skylights, new fixtures, and an expanded assortment of items for sale. Pacific Collections received the 3 Green Globes rating, demonstrating leadership in best practices regarding environmental efficiency. Green Globes is a web-based program for green building guidance and certification that includes an onsite assessment by a third party. The retail expansion was funded entirely by donors, many of whom are listed on pages 17 and 18. Among those supporters were Aquarium Board Member Stephen Olson and his wife Brenda, who pledged $200,000 to the gift store expansion. 4 VISION OCEAN EXPLORATION 2020: A NATIONAL FORUM • On July 19 and M O 20, 2013, more than 100 of the nation’s preeminent ocean explorers C ENT. along with representatives from federal agencies, state governments, M non-governmental organizations, universities, ocean institutes, and other stakeholders gathered at the Aquarium to draft a national ocean CAUGHTINTHEMO exploration plan for the year 2020.
