Mahonia × Media
Mahonia × media Mahonia × media is an interspecific hybrid shrub. Its parents are Mahonia oiwakensis subsp. lomariifolia (previously known as Mahonia lomariifolia) and Mahonia japonica. It was raised in gardens during the 20th Century, and has become an important garden and landscape plant. Description The hybrids show some variation, but are generally intermediate in most characteristics between the two parents. The following description is of the clone 'Charity'. These are medium to large shrubs, reaching 4 m (13 ft) in height. The plants have an upright form, becoming bare at the base. There are between 7 and 11 pairs of leaflets, plus a terminal leaflet. The flowers are in somewhat spreading racemes, often as long as in M. japonica. There is some scent to the flowers, but it is not as strong as in M. japonica. Flowering goes on throughout the winter. Different clones may resemble one or the other parent more closely. It is possible that other species of Mahonia have contributed to the stock ascribed to this hybrid. Mahonia bealei is considered particularly likely to be one of these as it is often confused with Mahonia japonica.Many clones have an upright architectural form derived from M. oiwakensis subsp. lomariifolia, though some resemble the M. japonica parent rather more. Plants provide viable seed, and second generation hybrids have been raised. The plants are especially valued in the garden because of their ornamental leaves, and because they flower through the winter. Origin The first recorded plant was found in a mixed batch of seedlings from Mahonia oiwakensis subsp. lomariifolia that was raised in Northern Ireland in 1951 or earlier. -

Phylogeny and Phylogenetic Taxonomy of Dipsacales, with Special Reference to Sinadoxa and Tetradoxa (Adoxaceae)
PHYLOGENY AND PHYLOGENETIC TAXONOMY OF DIPSACALES, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINADOXA AND TETRADOXA (ADOXACEAE) MICHAEL J. DONOGHUE,1 TORSTEN ERIKSSON,2 PATRICK A. REEVES,3 AND RICHARD G. OLMSTEAD 3 Abstract. To further clarify phylogenetic relationships within Dipsacales,we analyzed new and previously pub- lished rbcL sequences, alone and in combination with morphological data. We also examined relationships within Adoxaceae using rbcL and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. We conclude from these analyses that Dipsacales comprise two major lineages:Adoxaceae and Caprifoliaceae (sensu Judd et al.,1994), which both contain elements of traditional Caprifoliaceae.Within Adoxaceae, the following relation- ships are strongly supported: (Viburnum (Sambucus (Sinadoxa (Tetradoxa, Adoxa)))). Combined analyses of C ap ri foliaceae yield the fo l l ow i n g : ( C ap ri folieae (Diervilleae (Linnaeeae (Morinaceae (Dipsacaceae (Triplostegia,Valerianaceae)))))). On the basis of these results we provide phylogenetic definitions for the names of several major clades. Within Adoxaceae, Adoxina refers to the clade including Sinadoxa, Tetradoxa, and Adoxa.This lineage is marked by herbaceous habit, reduction in the number of perianth parts,nectaries of mul- ticellular hairs on the perianth,and bifid stamens. The clade including Morinaceae,Valerianaceae, Triplostegia, and Dipsacaceae is here named Valerina. Probable synapomorphies include herbaceousness,presence of an epi- calyx (lost or modified in Valerianaceae), reduced endosperm,and distinctive chemistry, including production of monoterpenoids. The clade containing Valerina plus Linnaeeae we name Linnina. This lineage is distinguished by reduction to four (or fewer) stamens, by abortion of two of the three carpels,and possibly by supernumerary inflorescences bracts. Once on the intercity express, we settled down to a comfortable journey, through the Swiss countryside, towards the Alps. We passed Lake Zurich and the Walensee, meeting the Rhine as it flows into Liectenstein, and then changed to the UNESCO World Heritage Albula railway at Chur. Dramatic scenery and many loops, tunnels and bridges followed, as we made our way through the Alps. After passing through the long Preda tunnel, we entered a sunny Engadine and made a third change, at Samedan, for the short ride to Pontresina. We transferred to the hotel by minibus and met the remaining two members of our group, before enjoying a lovely evening meal. After a brief talk about the plans for the week, we retired to bed. Day 2 Monday 9th July After a 20-minute walk from the hotel, we caught the 9.06am train at Surovas. We had a scenic introduction to the geography of the region, as we travelled south along the length of Val Bernina, crossing the watershed beside Lago Bianco and alighting at Alp Grum. -

This study investigates chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oil of Lavandula officinalis from Montenegro, Mediterranean, and effects on autonomic nervous system. The oil was analysed by GC-MS technique in order to determine the majority compounds while dilution method was used to determine minimal inhibitory concentration. The present study assessed autonomic parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate, and skin temperature to determine the arousal level of the autonomic nervous system. In addition, subjects were asked to estimate their mood responses such as feeling pleasant or unpleasant, uncomfortable, sen- suality, relaxation, or refreshing in order to assess subjective behavioural arousal. Chemical analysis by GC-MS identified 31 compounds in lavender oil representing 96.88% of the total oil. Linalool (24.84%), was a major component, together with linalyl acetate (22.39%), 1,8 cineole (18.13%) and camphor (12.88%). The investigat- ed lavender oil consisted mostly of oxygenated monoterpenes (87.95%) and monoterpene hydrocarbons (7%).
