Box 2460), Saudi Arabia *corresponding author: [email protected] Received 18 August 2015; accepted 07 October 2015 A b s t r a c t The aim of the current study was to determine the floral phenology, nectar secretion dynamics, and honey production potentials of two naturally growing lavender species (L. dentata and L. pubescens), in southwestern Saudi Arabia. In both species, flowering is continuous. This means that, when open flowers on a spike are shaded, new flowers emerge. Such a flowering pattern might be advantageous to the plant to minimise competition for pollinators and promote efficient resource allocation. The flowering periods of the two species overlap. Both species secreted increasing amounts of nectar from early morning to late afternoon. The mean maximum volumes of accumulated nectar from bagged flowers occurred at 15:00 for L. pubescens (0.50 ± 0.24 µL/flower) and at 18:00 for L. dentata (0.68 ± 0.19 µL/flower). The volume of the nectar that became available between two successive measurements (three-h intervals) varied from 0.04 µL/flower to 0.28 µL/flower for L. -

The aims of the present study were to characterize the morphology of L. dentata grown in Paraíba do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and determine the content and chemical composition of its essential oil. Morphology of the plant was determined using the optical microscope, digital calliper and measuring tape. The fresh plant material characteristics consisting of the branches, leaves, and inflorescence were described. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation and analyses chemical characteristics were performed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Our study shows a large number of non-glandular trichomes were identified, as well as two types of glandular trichomes, including capitate and peltate glandular trichomes. This work achieved high essential oil content which were related to vegetable biomass. -

Saline water irrigation in floriculture for the production of nursery crops requires an understanding of plant response. The pot growth of four lavender species (Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandula dentata var. dentata, Lavandula dentata var. candicans and Lavandula stoechas) irrigated with water containing different concentrations of NaCl (0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 mM) was investigated under greenhouse conditions. Overall results of different plant growth variables were consistent, showing a significant decrease at 100 and 200 mM NaCl. All lavender species showed signs of salinity stress that included chlorosis, followed by leaf and stem necrosis at NaCl concentrations greater than 50 mM.
