Web Edition The Canadian Annual 2018

The purpose of the Canadian Saluki Annual is to keep an archival record of the Saluki in Canada and to foster cohesiveness in the Canadian Saluki community. We reserve the right to withhold any item or article, which in our opinion would reflect badly on the breed or any individual/group. Also, please note, the opinions expressed within these pages are not necessarily ours. Contact Cathie Hays for permission to reprint any part of this magazine.

It is our intention to publish the Canadian Saluki Annual yearly. The scope of the magazine will include: •• All Saluki specialty shows in Canada for that year, including critiques and photos if available. •• Top 10 in Canada for all CKC events – conformation, , rally, obedience, agility, etc. •• New title holders, litters and foreign registrations, and upcoming litters. •• Articles that support and promote the well-being of the breed. Submission of photos and articles for publication are always welcome.

Who may participate (have one or two pages in the magazine) •• All who live in Canada, or are Canadian and also own a Saluki. •• Anyone who owns a Canadian born Saluki but does not live in Canada. •• Anyone who exhibited a Saluki in a CKC event in the calendar year of the issue and wishes to advertise that win.

Pages in the magazine •• Space for each person will be limited to two pages, plus one extra page for an upcoming litter. •• There is no charge for pages. •• All pages will be colour. •• Finished pages must be sent in the following format – press pdfs, with all photos CMYK, set at 100% and 300 ppi. Page size is 7.5 x 10 inches. In your ad, please include the registered name(s) of your Saluki(s) and your contact information. •• For those requiring layout, please send text, basic layout and photos (high resolution jpgs) to me, Cathie Hays, [email protected]. In your ad, please include the registered name(s) of your Saluki(s) and your contact information. There will be no charge for layout unless you request multiple changes.

I am deeply indebted to Gerry Steers, who has done the lion’s share of the ads in this magazine. I would also like to thank Robbie Pattison for her writing skills and editorial efforts, Patty Milton for the CKC statistics and her article on the Afking rescue, Trish Taylor for her article, “Finding Zoe,” Brian Duggan for his article, “Florence Amherst on Oriental ;” and Sally Anne Thompson for giving us access to her captivating photographs, which certainly caught my eye back in 1979.

The Canadian Saluki Annual 2018 3 CKC Breed Standard for the Saluki

Origin and Purpose: The Saluki is one of the oldest known breeds of dogs. It has existed, virtually unchanged, for many thousands of years. It was originally bred by the Arab tribesmen for bringing down game, and was considered a sacred gift of god by the tribesmen. In Arabic, an ordinary is called kelb, while the Saluki is El Hor, The Noble one.

General Appearance: The whole appearance of this breed should give an impression of grace and symmetry and of great speed and endurance coupled with strength and activity to enable it to kill a gazelle or other quarry over deep sand or rocky mountains. The expression should be dignified and gentle with deep, faithful, far-seeing eyes.

Size: Dogs should average in height from 23 to 28 inches (58 to 71 cm), and bitches may be considerably smaller, this being very typical of the breed.

Coat: Smooth and of a soft silky texture, slight feather on the legs, feather at the back of the thighs and sometimes with slight wooly feather on the thigh and shoulder.

Colour: White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle, and tan tricolour (white, black and tan), black and tan, or any of the aforementioned colours and white.

Head: Long and narrow, skull moderately wide between the ears, not domed, stop not pronounced, the whole showing great quality. Nose black or liver; teeth strong and level; eyes dark to hazel and bright; large and oval, but not prominent; ears long and covered with long silky hair hanging close to the skull and mobile.

Neck: Long, supple, and well muscled.

Forequarters: Shoulders sloping and set well back, well muscled without being coarse. Forelegs straight and long from the elbow to the knee.

Loin and Back: Back fairly broad, muscles slightly arched over loin. Chest deep and moderately narrow.

Hindquarters: Strong, hip bones set well apart and stifle moderately bent, hocks low to the ground, showing galloping and jumping power.

Feet: Of moderate length, toes long and well arched, not splayed out, but at the same time not cat-footed: the whole being strong and supple and well feathered between the toes.

Tail: Long, set on low and carried naturally in a curve, well feathered on the underside with long silky hair, not bushy.

The Smooth Variety: In this variety the points should be the same with the exception of the coat, which has no feathering.

Though he was not a career show dog, he had success in the ring and more importantly was the best companion one could want.

In Saskatchewan he ran in open fields and on Vancouver Island he knew the trails, including bears and deer. On the beach he attempted to hunt the boats in the water.

50 Champion Iroki Auldstane ’Allelujah’ July 23, 2005 - October 13, 2018

Gabriel was the supervising puppy as we built the Saskatchewan house. And in succeeding years he took his guard duties very seriously on the prairie and later, on Vancouver Island.

He chose his friends carefully and never forgot them, celebrating their arrival for visits.

With his son and daughter, he ran free on Island trails and in later years he kept watch at the front door, where his faithful spririt remains.

Finding Zoe

This is the story of finding and finally catching I inadvertently trapped her (so I thought) in a 12 year old Zoe, 10 days after she slipped out my broken down lean-to type shelter. As I came down gate and made her way over onto the forested the only (and very narrow) path leading to it, there trail system along the river behind my house. She she was, standing frozen in the right hand side, had recently come into my care and my heart fear in her eyes, ready to flee. I gasped out loud via OMHS from the SPCA raid and seizure of the when I saw her there. I was about 25 feet away and Afking Salukis. I very slowly sat down on a big downed tree. That hot, humid day, I was searching in an area First I calmed myself, then started trying to get where I’d seen Zoe the day before. I had just her to relax. I tossed bits of food to her and she was changed out the card on the trail camera and very hungry but would eat only what landed right at circled around onto an unfamiliar trail, when her feet. After close to an hour she finally lay down

I sat there for a bit, wondering how got close she spotted Zoe curled up, asleep in long it would be before it was safe to move again the lean-to! We all quietly backed away and they and eyeing her shelter to determine the safest way devised a plan to hand catch her. Laura crept to get her without her injuring herself if she were up the left side to block the spot where Zoe had to panic. Suddenly she stood up and rushed out a gotten out earlier. I waited there for was ready to bolt) and gave her a clear view of the nearly half an hour but she didn’t reappear, so I left only escape route. Zoe took the bait and tried to a bit of food for her and started to head back the way I came. Quite a way down the path, I rounded a bend and startled her coming towards me, just a few feet away, as if she were returning to the lean- to. She really took off that time. Armed with that info, I called Laura McKibbon Caron (Healing Hearts Lost Search) and Maureen Häni, and they rounded up Andrea Barker from Oakville Milton HS (one of Zoe’s first care givers). Laura and Andrea headed to Brantford. While I waited to meet them, there was a torrential downpour, the second half of a big thunderstorm moving through, and I was soaked right through. Soon we were headed back down the stinging- nettle-lined trails, with provisions for a trap and a roll of plastic snow fence. Thankfully by then the rain had stopped. When I finally found the right trail, Andrea placed the snow fence loosely across it as a just-in-case deterrent. The plan was to assess the lean-to and decide where best to put the humane trap, and then go back to its current location and get it.

84 Information Please

If you’re looking for information about the breed in general, the place to start is with the country’s Saluki breed clubs. In Canada we have two, the Saluki Club of Canada and the Pacific Saluki Club of BC. Janice Preiss, Secretary Treasurer, Saluki Club of Canada. Contact Janice at [email protected] or if you prefer, visit the Club website www.salukicanada.com. Susan Mitchell, President, Pacific Saluki Club of BC. Contact Susan at [email protected]

If you’re interested in pedigrees, The Saluki Archives is an excellent resource. Anyone can access the site, but if you want to add information or pictures (or correct any errors you might come across) you can also register (it’s free). http://www.thesalukiarchives.com/

For most of us, our Salukis are first and foremost treasured pets, but we also like to show off their beauty in the show ring, or celebrate their athleticism on the lure coursing field. But why stop there? Salukis have competed successfully in obedience, rally and agility, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s also oval track racing, chase ability, scent hurdling, tracking, flyball, barn hunt—the list is almost endless, and every year new sports are added to the roster. While not all of them play directly to the Saluki’s particular range of specialized talents, Salukis and their owners can not only successfully compete but have a good time too. If you’re looking to find what’s going on near you, check the CKC website: https://www.ckc.ca/ The Canadian Kennel Club offers shows and most canine performance events, though it’s not the only game in town. Another good source of information is CanuckDogs: http://www.canuckdogs.com/ One advantage to CanuckDogs is that its listings are not restricted to official CKC events, and it also includes seminars and health clinics.
