Heraldry in the Republic of Macedonia (1991-2019)

In this paper, we will consider heraldry in the Republic of Macedonia, understood by the multitude of coats of arms, and armorial knowledge and art. The paper covers the period from independence until the name change (1991-2019). It co- vers the state coat of arms of the Republic of Macedonia especially the 2009 change. Special atten- tion is given to the development of the municipal heraldry, including the legal system covering the subject. Also personal heraldry developed in 21 century is considered. The paper covers the de- velopment of heraldry and the heraldic thought in the given period, including the role of the Macedonian Heraldic Society and its journal Macedonian Herald in development of theoretic and practical heraldry, as well as its Register of arms and the Macedonian Civic Heraldic System. Introduction The Republic of Macedonia became independent from the Socialist Federative Re- public of Yugoslavia with the Referendum of 8 September 1991. The Democratic Federal Macedonia was formed during the first session of the Anti-Fascist Assembly for the Na- tional Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM) on 2 August 1944 (it later became the People’s Republic of Macedonia, a federal unit of the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia). -

It was in fact Professor Stavrou who many years ago at a Slavic conference broached the idea of an Orthodox Commonwealth that inspired other academics and myself to pursue the topic. Professor Carla Phillips impressed upon me the significance of daily life among the people of Europe during the early modern period (1450-1800). As Professor Phillips’ teaching assistant for a number of years, I witnessed lectures that animated the historical narrative and inspired students to question their own unique sense of historical continuity and discontinuities. Thank you, Professor Phillips, for such a pedagogical example. -

THE PERSONALITY OF THE SAINTLY PRINCE CONSTANTIN BRÂNCOVEANU AS REVEALED IN THE PREFACES OF THE BOOKS PRINTED IN HIS AGE Iulian Isbăşoiu1 Abstract: Three hundred years ago Saint Constantin Brâncoveanu passed away, the prince who was martyred with his sons and one of his subjects. The grand prince marked the era he ruled by a revival of the social, political and cultural life of Walachia acknowledged both by his contemporaries and by those who studied his life and decided in 1992 to place him among the saints. The perfect and selfless leader had to manage in a period of great turmoil and to face imminent dangers for the people he led. If politically he had the ability to overcome all obstacles, events happened with greater success when we analyze his cultural achievements. To prove this statement, we have analyzed in this study the written record of his most important collaborators in the realm of culture: metropolitans Theodosius and Antim Ivireanul, bishops Metrophanes and Damascus, etc. In the prefaces of the printed work done in his time, they constitute a complete portrait of the personality of the Holy prince, appreciating all the qualities that made him remain in history as a culture creator and benefactor of the Orthodox Churches. The Holy See Coat of Arms of His Holiness Benedict XVI Armour bearings have been in common use by soldiers and the nobility since the Middle Ages. This has given rise to a very specific heraldic language to regulate and describe civic heraldry. At the same time, an ecclesiastical heraldry for clergy also developed. This heraldic usage follows exactly the same rules as civic heraldry with regard to the composition and definition of the shield, but surrounds it with religious or Church symbols and emblems according to one's ecclesiastical rank in Holy Orders, jurisdiction and dignity. There is an at least 800-year-old tradition for Popes to have their own personal coat of arms, in addition to the symbols proper to the Apostolic See. Particularly during the Renaissance and the centuries that followed, it was customary to mark with the arms of the reigning Supreme Pontiff all his principal works. Indeed, Papal coats of arms appear on buildings and in various publications, 2 decrees and documents. Popes often used their family shield or composed their own with symbols indicating their ideal of life or referring to past events or experiences, or even elements connected with specific Pontifical programmes. At times, they even added a variant to a shield that they had adopted on becoming a Bishop. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, elected Pope and taking the name Benedict XVI, has chosen a coat of arms rich in symbolism and meaning that transmits to history his personality and Pontificate. A coat of arms consists of a shield bearing several important symbols and surrounded by elements that indicate the person's dignity, rank, title, jurisdiction and more. -

The Graphic Herald: Exploring Heraldic Language Through Graphic Design by Daniel McCabe Heraldry is everywhere around us. Its visual language is found in a rich variety of graphic guises and contemporary contexts, from castles and pubs to street signs and fine wines. But to what extent do those with an interest in heraldry appreciate and understand the ways in which the language of armory is applied and perceived in the modern world? Drawing on insights gained during an extensive practice-based research project, this essay considers the extent to which graphic design can explore, expose, and challenge the application and perception of heraldry within the context of twenty-first-century British society.1 Graphic design as an academic discipline offers particular advantages to heraldic enquiry, since it utilizes a dynamic range of investigative methods in relation to undertaking practice- based research. It offers researchers the opportunity to record, analyse, test, and communicate ideas through a combination of visual and textual responses. Graphic design also draws upon specific semiotic theories connected to how we read and find meaning in symbolic matter, all of which are especially pertinent to exploring the visual field of heraldry. Therefore, graphic design provides both an excellent research framework through which the existence of heraldic visual language in contemporary society can be examined critically, and a conceptual approach to exploring ways in which its relationship with the public can be revealed. For the graphic design educator and practitioner, heraldry can appear both distant and, yet, strangely familiar. On one level it is a symbolically enigmatic art form, one that speaks of knights, of chivalry, and of societal hierarchy.
