Place of cannons Ten kilometres east of Retimo the road to Arkadi branches off inland and in 2 hours one gets to the monastery (note: I came the reverse way on this first visit). At this point there is a high rolling plateau 500 metres above the sea and quite near the north edge of this is the monastery. A new church ten minutes north of the monastery is nearly on the edge of this plateau. At a later visit I came to Arkadi from, I think, Anogia and lost the way a good deal and arrived in the evening by recognising this new church and making for it, as it is conspicuous a long way off whilst the monastery itself is hidden from the north and east by the rising ground upon which this church stands. It can be seen from the sea, but the monastery itself cannot. A gorge wooded with scrub cuts into this plateau and almost at the top of this gorge at its east side is Arkadi. From the gorge one sees only the Heroon and the tops of a few trees by the moni. -

Ancient Philosophy 21 (2001) ©Mathesis Publications 1 The Heraclitus Anecdote: De Partibus Animalium i 5.645a17-23 Pavel Gregoric Chapter 5 of the first book of Aristotle’s De Partibus Animalium contains a short self-contained treatise (644b22-645a36) which has been characterised as a ‘protreptic to the study of animals’ (Peck in Aristotle 1937, 97). Such a charac- terisation of the treatise may be misleading, because Aristotle does not seem to have composed it in order to motivate his audience to go out in the field and study animals, but rather to kindle their interest in the scientific account of ani- mals which he is about to provide. It is reasonable to suppose that Aristotle’s audience, eager to learn something valuable and dignified, needed an explanation of why they should like to hear, amongst other animals, about sponges, snails, grubs, and other humble creatures which are displeasing even to look at, not to mention witnessing the dissections that might have accompanied Aristotle’s lec- tures on animals (cf. Bonitz 1870, 104a4-17; Lloyd 1978). Aristotle explains why such ignoble animals deserve a place in a scientific account of animals and he illustrates that with an anecdote about Heraclitus. So one must not be childishly repelled by the examination of the humbler animals. For in all things of nature there is some- thing wonderful. And just as Heraclitus is said to have spoken to the visitors who wanted to meet him and who stopped as they were approaching when they saw him warming himself by the oven (e‰don aÈtÚn yerÒmenon prÚw t“ fipn“)—he urged them to come in without fear (§k°leue går aÈtoÁw efisi°nai yarroËntaw), for there were gods there too (e‰nai går ka‹ §ntaËya yeoÊw)—so one must approach the inquiry about each animal without aversion, since in all of them there is something natural and beautiful. -

Citations in Classics and Ancient History The most common style in use in the field of Classical Studies is the author-date style, also known as Chicago 2, but MLA is also quite common and perfectly acceptable. Quick guides for each of MLA and Chicago 2 are readily available as PDF downloads. The Chicago Manual of Style Online offers a guide on their web-page: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html The Modern Language Association (MLA) does not, but many educational institutions post an MLA guide for free access. While a specific citation style should be followed carefully, none take into account the specific practices of Classical Studies. They are all (Chicago, MLA and others) perfectly suitable for citing most resources, but should not be followed for citing ancient Greek and Latin primary source material, including primary sources in translation. Citing Primary Sources: Every ancient text has its own unique system for locating content by numbers. For example, Homer's Iliad is divided into 24 Books (what we might now call chapters) and the lines of each Book are numbered from line 1. Herodotus' Histories is divided into nine Books and each of these Books is divided into Chapters and each chapter into line numbers. The purpose of such a system is that the Iliad, or any primary source, can be cited in any language and from any publication and always refer to the same passage. That is why we do not cite Herodotus page 66. Page 66 in what publication, in what edition? Very early in your textbook, Apodexis Historia, a passage from Herodotus is reproduced. -

THE PERSONALITY OF THE SAINTLY PRINCE CONSTANTIN BRÂNCOVEANU AS REVEALED IN THE PREFACES OF THE BOOKS PRINTED IN HIS AGE Iulian Isbăşoiu1 Abstract: Three hundred years ago Saint Constantin Brâncoveanu passed away, the prince who was martyred with his sons and one of his subjects. The grand prince marked the era he ruled by a revival of the social, political and cultural life of Walachia acknowledged both by his contemporaries and by those who studied his life and decided in 1992 to place him among the saints. The perfect and selfless leader had to manage in a period of great turmoil and to face imminent dangers for the people he led. If politically he had the ability to overcome all obstacles, events happened with greater success when we analyze his cultural achievements. To prove this statement, we have analyzed in this study the written record of his most important collaborators in the realm of culture: metropolitans Theodosius and Antim Ivireanul, bishops Metrophanes and Damascus, etc. In the prefaces of the printed work done in his time, they constitute a complete portrait of the personality of the Holy prince, appreciating all the qualities that made him remain in history as a culture creator and benefactor of the Orthodox Churches.
