Astrei Şi a Academiei Române, Până La 1918
CARTEA ROMÂNEASCĂ VECHE ÎN PREOCUPĂRILE ASTREI ŞI A ACADEMIEI ROMÂNE, PÂNĂ LA 1918 IOANOROS După înfrângerea Revoluţiei de la 1848-1849, în toate provinciile române au loc importante schimbări social-politice: instaurarea neoabsolu tismului (1849-1859), a liberalismului habsburgic (1860-1867), apoi, a dualismului austro-ungar, după 1867, în Transilvania; Unirea Principatelor şi constituirea statului naţional modern al României (1859), domnia septenală a lui Al. I. Cuza cu reformele ei; au loc războiul pentru independenţă (1877), proclamarea regatului României (1881) şi primul război mondial (1914-1916), culminând cu Marea Unire din 1918 şi, drept consecinţă imediată, făurirea statului naţional unitar România. Chiar şi o simplă rememorare aici a principalelor evenimente istorice petrecute de la mijlocul secolului al XIX-iea, până spre sfârşitul celei de-a doua decade a secolului al XX-iea, ne sugerează ca fiind perioada cu cele mai complexe transformări din istoria noastră, una în care mutaţiile istoriografice sunt semnificative pentru cultura unui stat modern, racordat la valorile ştiinţifice şi culturale europene. CALENDAR CULTURAL 2011 OCTOMBRIE Octombrie este cea de-a doua lună din străvechiul calendar biblic, cea de-a zecea din calendarele reformate, cel iulian şi gregorian şi una dintre cele şapte luni gregoriene cu o durată de 31 de zile. Numele lunii octombrie (latină: October) vine de la cuvantul latinesc octo, opt, pentru ca luna octombrie era a opta lună în calendarul roman. Grecii numeau luna octombrie Pyanopsion. „Cu soarele azi galben ca fagurii de miere, în jurul meu se-nchide un măr boltit de mere. Din ram eu rup ca-n basme un măr de aur şi O, pom vrăjit de toamnă, nu poţi să mă reţii Prin ramuri desfăcute uşor de mâna mea, Zăresc comoara viei şi-odihna ei mă vrea. Sub un butuc de viţă rămân culcat pe spate – Privesc în gol la cerul cu ape neschimbate.” Ion Pillat - Brumărel In România, luna octombrie, popular, se numeste Brumărel. Fenomenele meteorologice care se produc în aceste săptămâni sunt definitorii pentru viitor, pe de o parte, şi impun desfăşurarea anumitor activităţi agricole, pe de altă parte. Aşa cum îi spune şi numele, în această perioadă „începe a bruma, încep a cădea brumele cele mici.” Într-o versificaţie populară se arată că: „Brumărel e necăjos şi suflă rece/ Pe unde merge, el pârleşte/ Copacii verzi îi goleşte./ Bruma cade pe ogoare,/ Holdele îs de mult în hambare/ Leneşii tremură de frică / Şi pielea le-o înfurnică” Sărbătorile din această lună se încadrează, din punctul de vedere al meteorologiei populare, unui timp de tranzitie. Professor Carla Phillips impressed upon me the significance of daily life among the people of Europe during the early modern period (1450-1800). As Professor Phillips’ teaching assistant for a number of years, I witnessed lectures that animated the historical narrative and inspired students to question their own unique sense of historical continuity and discontinuities. THE PERSONALITY OF THE SAINTLY PRINCE CONSTANTIN BRÂNCOVEANU AS REVEALED IN THE PREFACES OF THE BOOKS PRINTED IN HIS AGE Iulian Isbăşoiu1 Abstract: Three hundred years ago Saint Constantin Brâncoveanu passed away, the prince who was martyred with his sons and one of his subjects. The grand prince marked the era he ruled by a revival of the social, political and cultural life of Walachia acknowledged both by his contemporaries and by those who studied his life and decided in 1992 to place him among the saints. The perfect and selfless leader had to manage in a period of great turmoil and to face imminent dangers for the people he led. If politically he had the ability to overcome all obstacles, events happened with greater success when we analyze his cultural achievements. To prove this statement, we have analyzed in this study the written record of his most important collaborators in the realm of culture: metropolitans Theodosius and Antim Ivireanul, bishops Metrophanes and Damascus, etc. In the prefaces of the printed work done in his time, they constitute a complete portrait of the personality of the Holy prince, appreciating all the qualities that made him remain in history as a culture creator and benefactor of the Orthodox Churches. SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH november 12, 2017—8th sunday of luke aint John the Merciful, Patriarch of Alexandria, was born on Cyprus in the seventh century into the family of the illustrious dignitary Epiphanius. At the wish of his parents he entered into marriage and had children. When the wife and the children of the saint died, he became a monk. He was zeal- Sous in fasting and prayer, and had great love for those around him. His spiritual exploits won him honor among men, and even the emperor revered him. When the Patriar- chal throne of Alexandria fell vacant, the emperor Heraclius and all the clergy begged Saint John to occupy the Patriarchal throne. The saint worthily assumed his archpastoral service, concerning himself with the moral and dogmatic welfare of his flock. As patriarch he denounced every soul-destroying heresy, and drove out from Alexan- dria the Monophysite Phyllonos of Antioch. He considered his chief task to be charitable and to give help all those in need. At the beginning of his patriarchal service he ordered his stewards to compile a list of all the poor and downtrodden in Alexandria, which turned out to be over seven thousand men. The saint ordered that all of these unfortunates be pro- vided for each day out of the church’s treasury. Twice during the week, on Wednesdays and Fridays, he emerged from the doors of the patriarchal ca- thedral, and sitting on the church portico, he received everyone in need. He settled quarrels, helped the wronged, and distributed alms. -

His personality is thus equally acclaimed on synchronic and on diachronic level. This, no doubt, can be ascribed to his highly intuitive, sensible and justice-loving personality. Yet, apart from being greatly admired for his remarkable social-political and artistic accomplishments, Dimitrie Cantemir has something special to be remembered for: his semi-fictional nature, which, to the day, remains shrouded in a mythical aura. His exquisiteness may be accounted for by the prince’s double ancestry. His innovative genius and artistic nature came in maternal lineage, an independent and cultivated spirit herself, who defied and baffled contemporary conventions with her experimental initiatives. In addition to this, Dimitrie inherited the love of justice and that of his nation from his father, Constantin, an audacious fighter for the safety and well-being of his people. This article proposes a brief examination of the double nature of Dimitrie Cantemir’s personality, which has marked his entire endeavor: his diplomatic activity as Prince of Moldova and, to an equal extent, his writings, fictional or of a different nature.
