THE ITALIAN UNIVERSITY SYSTEM (DM 509/1999 AND DM 270/2004)

Since 1999, Italian university studies have been fully reformed so as to meet the objectives of the “Bologna process”. The university system is now organised on 3 cycles: the 1 st cycle academic degree, that is the Bachelor Degree, grants access to the 2 nd cycle, the Master Degree, gives access to the 3 rd cycle PhD Programmes.

Credits : degree courses are usually structured in credits (1 local credit called CFU = 1 ECTS). A university credit generally corresponds to 25 hours of global work per student, time for personal study included. The average workload of a full time student in conventionally fixed at 60 credits/year.

Italian Grading System The italian grading system is the 18 to 30 scale given in the following table, wherein 30 is the highest grade, and 18 the minimum pass.

Local grade (/30) ECTS grade 30 A Excellent 29 – 28 B Very good 27 - 26 - 25 C Good 24 – 23 – 22 - 21 D Satisfactory 20 – 19 - 18 E Sufficient Under 18 F Fail

Department of Culture, Politics and Society presentation 7

First cycle . Undergraduate studies consist exclusively in Bach elor’s degree courses. They are aimed at guaranteeing undergraduate students an adequate command of general scientific methods and contents as well as specific professional skills. General access requirement is the Italian high school diploma, awarded on passing the relevant state examinations, after completion of 13 years of global schooling. Admission to individual degree courses may be subject to specific course requirements. Bachelor’s degree courses last 3 years. The Laurea (L), or Bachelor ’s degree, is awarded to undergraduates who have earned 180 ECTS credits.

Second cycle . Postgraduate studies include Master’s degrees courses: what we call in Italian Corsi di Laurea Magistrale . Master ’s degrees are aimed at providing postgraduates with an advanced level of education for the exercise of a highly qualified activity in specific areas. Access to Master’s degrees is granted with an Italian Bachelor’s degree or a comparable foreign degree; admission is subject to specific course requirements determined by individual universities. Master’s degree courses last 2 years. The Laurea Magistrale (LM), or Master ’s degree, is awarded to graduates who have earned 120 ECTS credits, and defended an original dissertation in the final degree examination.

Third cycle . It covers the following typologies of degree courses: A) PhD program, B) Specialization courses.

A) PhD aims at training postgraduates for very advanced scientific research or for professional appointments of the highest consequence; they envisage the use of suitable teaching methodologies such as updated technologies, study periods abroad, internships in specialized research centres. Access is granted with an Italian Master’s degree or a comparable foreign degree; admission is subject to the passing of very competitive exams; legal length must be minimum 3 years; the drawing up of an original dissertation is necessary to award the PhD.

B) Specialization courses are devised to provide postgraduates with knowledge and abilities of highly qualifying professions; the majority concerns medical, clinical and surgical specialities, lawyers, magistrates, and teachers.

PART 3: LIFE IN TORINO AND USEFUL TIPS

Department of Culture, Politics and Society presentation 26

THE CITY OF TORINO Torino , the first capital city of united Italy in 1861, is an ancient place. Established by the Romans with a distinctive rectangular grid which mesmerizes visitors to this day, each moment in history has left its mark on the city, generating a legacy of culture, architecture and monuments. In 2012 the New York Times devoted to Torino one of its “36 hours in…” pieces.

The Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games showcased a cosmopolitan city, still attached to its industrial tradition – the now global FIAT car manufacture was founded here – while transforming into an Italian hub of technological and cultural innovation with a high quality of life. The UN System has its Staff College here ( UNSSC ), together with the Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute ( UNICRI ) and the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization ( ITC-ILO ). UNESCO has recently approved the creation of a centre for research on world cultural heritage to be based in the baroque Venaria Reale palace, one of several world heritage sites in the area. World-renowned Juventus football club – one of Torino’s glories – has its brand- new Stadium in town. In Turin there is the world’s second -largest Egyptian antiques museum after Cairo ( Museo Egizio ), the Automobile Museum , the Cinema Museum (few know that in the early days cinema was being developed here), and the Mountain Museum (Museo Nazionale della Montagna ), aptly located on Torino’s hills overlooking the Alps. In fact Torino’s region – (Piemonte) – means “at the feet of the mountains” and Europe’s most charming peaks are within a couple of hours drive.

The local cuisine is a cultural must in Torino. Its informal “trattoria ”, refined top- end restaurants and exotic ethnic eateries make the city one of the undisputed world capitals of taste, including for its illustrious wine scene, whether one is looking for whites (Gavi, Arneis, Moscato), superb reds (Dolcetto, Grignolino, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Barbaresco and Barolo), or even sparkling wines, which, through Martini & Rossi, gave rise to the tradition of Asti Spumante. Seemingly closer to the Northern European no-nonsense, hard-working style than to Mediterranean charm, Torino transforms at sunset: by aperitif time the streets are lit up and buzzing with people enjoying live jazz, exclusive dj sets, the local philharmonic orchestra performances, theatre and opera, but also shows, cabaret, literary cafes, street festivals and crazy notti bianche , all night non-stop events that animate the city streets until dawn.

MOBILE PHONES An Italian mobile phone number can be very useful to keep in touch with new friends you will make when you’ll be here! Most of young people get a prepaid SIM-card (bring an unblocked mobile phone with a SIM –card slot). It is very easy and cheap to get one, in fact SIM-cards usually cost 5 to 15 €, and most of the time some credit is included. The main operators are Tim, Vodafone, Wind and 3. You can add credit to your number through prepaid cards that can be found either in one of your operator’s outlets or at a “Tabaccaio”. You can buy credit on the Internet as well. To call your country instead, you can buy international cards at the Tabaccaio, to be used with a telephone or a mobile phone. Otherwise you can use Skype from your computer, which provides you with very cheap fares to call home, or it’s even for free if you are calling another computer!

EMERGENCY NUMBERS In case of emergency or imminent danger, you may call - Police (113 ), - or Carabinieri (112 ) - Vigili del Fuoco (Firefighters, 115 ) - Ambulance Service (118 )

We advise you to record these numbers in your phone book, just in case!
