Anheuser-Busch brewery halts beer production to send drinking water to Harvey victims

Updated on August 29, 2017 at 8:06 AM Posted on August 29, 2017 at 7:46 AM

By Geoff Herbert [email protected],

Budweiser's parent company is switching from beer to water at one factory in the wake of devastating floods in Texas.

Anheuser-Busch announced its brewery in Cartersville, Georgia, has halted beer production to help send emergency drinking water to those affected by Hurricane Harvey. More than 100,000 cans of water will be delivered to Arlington, Texas, in addition to a shipment that arrived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Monday.

NBC reports the brewer's distribution partner Mockler Beverage works with the American Red Cross to deliver emergency relief water to U.S. communi- ties in need.

According to WXIA, the A-B brewery in Georgia has similarly switched to water to help victims of other hurricanes and natural disasters.

"Throughout the year, we periodically pause beer production at our Cartersville, Georgia brewery to produce emergency canned drinking water so we are ready to help out communities across the country in times of crisis," Brewmaster Sarah Schilling from the Cartersville Brewery said in a statement. "Putting our production and logistics strengths to work by providing safe, clean drinking water is the best way we can help in these situations."

The storm, also known as Tropical Storm Harvey, left Houston and other parts of Texas ravaged with several feet of water. The Miami Herald reports Aransas Pass, Texas, lost its only water tower and may be without electricity for up to four weeks

The Cartersville brewery typically makes 24 different kinds of beer, but switches to water production at least twice a year for aid. A spokesperson said Anheuser-Busch has worked with the Red Cross for more than 100 years to help in times of need, and has donated more than 76 million cans of clean drinking water since 1988.
