Noises from the big end.

Have you ever wondered why it takes so long to complete a full ‘Nuts and Bolts’ restoration of a classic bike? I can remember the club once ran a survey and determined the average time to undertake a full restoration was approx. 18 months to 2 yrs. But that was back in the late 70’s when original parts for Classic bikes were still readily available from shops like: Allparts; Ryan and Honey; Burling and Simmons; A.P North; P&R Williams; London Trading co; Bennet and Woods; Fraser MC’s; Jim Eade’s; Ryans at Parramatta, as well as a host of local workshops supplying parts and services. Sadly we have seen most of these outlets disappear only to be left with a few outlets supplying just a selection of parts.

I can remember how it used to be, heading out on a Saturday morning shopping spree and coming back with all the parts necessary for an engine overhaul or just a new set of handlebars, levers and cables or a basic tune up kit. Parts for Matchless, Norton, Triumph, BSA, Velocette and BMW were available over the counter and ready to be fitted.

Now days, you’re lucky to find a cable that fits, as most are generic and need adjusting. The same with Pattern Parts, especially those, (enticingly cheap) parts from India, where the mounting holes are always half a hole out. Generally, your needs will require you placing an order and having to wait for parts to come in from overseas, so a six week delay is not uncommon. Meanwhile, your bike languished in the shed and you now attend club runs and outings in your car.

Then there is the ‘Family Factor’ (FF). After waiting for 6 weeks for your parts to arrive, suddenly your daughter needs help with a new kitchen she has ordered. The old kitchen needs to be pulled out, tradesmen need organising and the whole project needs managing. Another 12 weeks go by and you find yourself back in the garage again, working on the 600 twin. Then your brother asks for help as his car has broken down and he needs it fixed for work. The (FF) list gets longer and longer (Not to mention the birthday / anniversary / Christmas and New Year events that need preparation and planning). Woe is me, will I ever get to finish my 600 twin?

The latest setback relates to ordering new Siamesed exhaust pipes from the UK. The first set didn’t fit so I purchased a second set from an alternative supplier and they don’t fit either. With 40 pounds postage both ways, it’s not worth returning back to the UK, as all the cost will be absorbed in the postage. Now, I need to find a tube bender to make up a new set, or tweak the non-fitting ones into shape and then have them re-chromed. I am somewhat frustrated that it has taken 10 years since work started on the 600 twin and it is still not ready for inspection. The lack of available, original parts along with the Family Factor; Work; Household Maintenance and 3 x Club Committees, have all taken a piece out of each of my project(s) and commitment(s) time lines.

It seems the older we get the more involved we become in other activities, juggling one against the other. As John Lennon once said, ‘Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans’. However, there is comfort in knowing that I am not alone and this is a continuing trend amongst fellow Enthusiasts. After all, if we were not Enthusiastic about our projects and commitments then we wouldn’t be members of any club and we would all end up being ‘Couch Potatoes’, which is not the case. I am pleased with the direction our club is heading and that members are willing to take on extra roles and that bikes are being preserved and restored in accordance with our club’s aims. Regardless of the many setbacks (as mentioned above) we still have a vibrant Classic bike scene with lots of opportunities for members to enjoy, restoring and riding bikes as well as attending many of the ‘Social Events’, Monthly Meetings, Rallies, Road Runs and Show Days (Etc.). So, keep on planning and working on your projects, no matter how long they take. In the event of a setback, (while waiting on a 6 week mail order) attend, or even host, a social event. Just remember, your restoration will be finished one day, so enjoy the times in between.

THE VICE REPORT

Welcome to the first incarnation of the Vice Report. Now that I have your attention, can we turn our thoughts to matters of motorcycling, the Club, and our guest speakers at Sydney club meetings for the rest of the year.

The guest speaker at the March meeting will be an old work colleague of mine, Colin Hazell. Colin's interest is in lapidary, gems, gem cutting etc. He is very keen to show us what it is all about, but don't expect any diamond handouts. Colin also shares the same birthday as myself and the Pres, Mr de Lapp. Just thought you might like to know. I am working on another friend of mine to come along and give us a talk on the Parramatta to Castle Hill steam tramway and subsequent railway. Bruce has written two books on this little known period of public transport in the Parramatta and Hills districts.

For the August meeting, I have tentatively booked the NSW President of the National Trust to tell us of the activities of this august body.

But please don't forget that I am open to ideas, so please contact me if you know of someone who you think would provide an interesting talk.

Many of you will have heard of the German-made Hildebrand and Wolfmuller . Built between 1894 and 1897, they are considered the world's first motorcycle produced in significant numbers, estimates ranging from less than 1000 to 2000. Hildebrand and Wolfmuller were steam engineers, so it is no surprise that there are steam influences in the design. For example, the conrods were directly connected to the rear wheel using cranks, and rubber bands to return the rods. The machines were flat parallel twin four strokes of 1488cc, producing about 2.5hp at 240rpm. The rear guard was the radiator for the water cooling. There are a number of film clips on YouTube of these ancient marvels. Look them up and be amazed at these pioneer machines from the very dawn of motoring.

Yours in Vice (Presidency), David Lewis.

Occasional Comments by Alan Harper

I got a lovely note from Gordon Cansdale this year with his renewal, for those unfamiliar Gordon is a long time member of the club having joined in the 1980's and is now in his nineties. He mentioned that he has restored around 70 motorcycles over the years and still keeping active restoring another. At one time he had an impressive collection of rare and unusual bikes which has now been sold off to the corners of the world. He also sent a picture of one bike he is justifiably proud of, a very early 1931 500cc Ariel Square 4 which is now in a museum in New Zealand. Notes on the back of the pic also give an insight into how restorations were in the days before the internet, when you had to be creative rather than search the world in seconds for the rarer parts. The tank is a Rudge tank modified to suit and I doubt whether there would be anyone who could tell it was not an original.

The latest run for the Northwest was to Colo and had a reasonable roll up, but on arrival my Triumph Thunderbird with my son Alex on board was making some very expensive noises from the engine and I decided it would be best to go home and get the trailer for it. So I left it to Mark Jolly to lead the ride while we took the Triumph home and got a replacement. The run apparently was a good run through the back roads. Alex and I took a shortest route ride to catch up to the others at the café at Colo where they had completed the ride already started brunch. Not a memorable ride for us and it looks like the Triumph will require a rebuild, but since it hasn't been fully down since it was put together around 1982 its probably due for some work anyway.

Technical Talk Dave’s Diary No. 9 Motorcycle Chain Size Chart.

When looking for the right chain and Chain Size Pitch Inner Width - roller sprocket combination, make sure that you 415 1/2 3/16 first check the condition of each of the sprockets and ensure they are both 420 1/2 1/4 matched in Pitch and width. 428 1/2 5/16 From the table you can see there are three 520 5/8 1/4 different chain widths in the ½” and 5/8” 525 5/8 5/16 pitch series (which are the most commonly 530 5/8 3/8 used for Classic bikes). I once had a 250 AJS 630 3/4 3/8 where the previous owner mismatched the 219 .306 .183 gearbox and rear wheel sprocket widths and #40 1/2 5/16 used an oversized chain to compensate. This #35 3/8 3/16 resulted in accelerated wear on all of the #25 1/4 1/8 drivetrain components. Similarly, if a ½” 8 mm 8 mm pitch, Primary drive chain is too wide then it 10 mm 10 mm may foul on the inside of the primary chain cases. Heavy duty chains may have extra thick link plates, but the extra width may interfere with the chain guards, so it is always wise to measure all your clearances before ordering a new chain and /or sprocket combination.

These tables only apply to Classic Chain Pitch Width Roller Diameter bikes whose original 415 ½” /12.70mm 3/16” / 4.88mm 5/16” / 7.75mm specifications would have 420 ½” /12.70mm ¼” / 6.35mm 5/16” / 7.75mm included non-sealed chains (Part 428 ½” /12.70mm 5/16” / 7.75mm 21/64” / 8.51mm 2 reviews info on sealed chains). 520 5/8” /15.88mm ¼” / 6.35mm 13/32” / 10.16mm Care should be taken when 525 5/8” /15.88mm 5/16” / 7.85mm 13/32” / 10.16mm ordering on-line, that you only 530 5/8” /15.88mm 3/8” / 9.53mm 13/32” / 10.16mm order to the correct specification 532 5/8” /15.88mm 3/8” / 9.53mm 11.10mm for your bike. 630 ¾” /19.05mm 3/8” / 9.53mm 11.91mm Otherwise most chains are 632 ¾” /19.05mm 9.66mm 12.68mm available from your local bike shop or Bearing / Transmission supplier. Common brands for Classic bikes include: Renold; DID; RK; Tsubaki, Regina; EK; Acme; KCM.

NOTE: Always assemble the joining clip in direction of chain motion Pitch

APRIL Quiz Answers:

A1. FN (Fabrique Nationale) A2. 1957 A3. An 80cc three-speed made by Hodaka, a Japanese builder of two-stroke engines.

The FN Four's engine was designed by Paul Kelecom who had designed single cylinder engines prior to the FN. The air cooled layout was prone to overheating the rear cylinders, a trait overcome in later designs with water cooling and transverse layout. FN originally fitted the Four with a 350 cc or 362 cc engine. The displacement increased over time, to 410 cc in 1906, later to 498 cc for the US market, and a 748 cc variant was produced in 1914. The engine had to be periodically oiled during riding, with hand pump.[16] The intake valves were atmospheric, pushed open by ambient air pressure against light springs during the piston's intake stroke, up to the 1914 748 cc model, which replaced the automatic inlet valves with mechanically actuated side valves. First four cylinder motorcycle? “[A]lthough there were four-cylinder motorcycles prior to the FN, none came near matching the eminently successful and practical performance of the FN right from the beginning”.

— T.A. Hodgdon, Motorcycling's Golden Age of the Fours, 1976 The FN Four was the first production inline-four, but not the first motorcycle with a four-cylinder engine. It was preceded by a boxer 4 manufactured in 1897 by Henry Capel Lofft Holden, and an obscure air-cooled inline-four developed in 1903 by C. Binks of Nottingham, England, but never produced commercially. A longitudinally mounted four- cylinder "model CCCC" prototype was created by Laurin & Klement and shown in Paris in 1904 but it was essentially four ganged single-cylinder engines with four separate crankshafts, not an inline-four in the modern sense. The FN, at the time of its introduction, was the only four-cylinder motorcycle for sale in America. (later Henderson Motorcycle sold a four from 1912 until 1931.)

Too long between drinks - my Orange Rally 2019 by Alan Harper

It's been a while since I went to an Orange Rally, last time would have been in the mid 1980's, but I have been considering going for a few years but have been stopped by my own inertia. But after I had 3 people in quick succession ask if I was going to Orange this year I figured it was time to get off my butt and go again.

I was the last official entry received by the organisers and had entry number 85, but I am sure there would have been a few more on the day.

I decided I would ride up this year and took the Kawasaki Z1000ST, this being the most reliable and suitable bike for the weekend covering about 700klm. On Friday around 1:30pm I met up with Chris O'Carroll at McGraths Hill on his BMW K100 for the run out to Orange, it was an easy run in the best of riding conditions, taking the most direct route on the Bells Line of Road to Lithgow stopping for petrol, then on to Bathurst where it seemed to be peak hour. Then on to Orange where we were in a line of traffic stopped for one of their infrequent freight trains before heading to the Scout camp at Mt Canobolas. There were quite a few familiar faces already there and more arrived as the afternoon turned to evening. Several of our Sydney members had set up camp in either a tent (Ian Wood and Barry Newall or luxury digs Kim Fleming), Chris O'Carroll, Dave Smith, Ray Gosling and myself chose the bunkhouse, which I have to say, is vastly improved over the last time I was there having new beds and air conditioning. With no catering on site for the Friday night a group of us headed down to Orange for a dinner at one of the pubs. Good food and good company ensured the evening went by quickly before we returned to camp, heading to either campsite or the bunkhouse. Along with the improved facilities this time there seemed to be no snorers in the bunkhouse and it was easy to sleep as the temperature didn't drop too low overnight.

Saturday started with breakfast at the dining area before signing on and collecting your rally bag with the much prized Orange Rally shirt. There was a short briefing before departure of the run at 9am . With a marshal on each corner directing us, nobody got lost this year as we headed on mostly excellent roads with great scenery through Cargo to Canowindra, to be met by locals and a huge morning tea. There was time to catch up with more people and check out all the bikes before heading to Blayney for another good feed at the local school and machine judging. There were no bikes from the vintage period but there was a good spread of bikes from the other classes with 60's, 70's and 80's bikes being the most numerous. The run back to Orange was not marshalled, but as there was only a couple of well signposted turns this was not a problem. In town we were among the many to visit Dan Murphy's for a bottle of wine or beer for dinner. Back to camp for a freshen up before another great feed and the presentation of prizes for some spectacular bikes and almost never ending raffle draws before we tried to solve the world's problems over the remnants of our wine .

Sunday was cool and clear and promised another day of great riding, but like a lot of the rally goers we needed to get home and didn't do the short run, instead having a quick run up to the peak of Mt Canobolas to take in the spectacular views before heading back to Sydney via Bathurst then taking in the wonderful roads to Oberon for a lunch stop and a ride through the twisty roads to Mt Victoria, across to Bell and down the Bells Line of road towards Sydney and home.

It certainly has been a long time between drinks for the Orange Rally and I won't be leaving it so long before going again as it is great to catch up with friends and enjoy some of the best roads and riding conditions, next year looks like it will be on my calendar and this time I won't be the last to get my entry in.

2019 Canobolas Country Rally - David Scott

Once again, the 38th Canobolas Rally got off to a great start on Saturday 16th February with around 100 bikes revving, sputtering and roaring to life as they headed out on the 200km ride through the magnificent countryside of Orange and its surrounding districts. Bikes ranged from Anthony Nixon’s stand-out 1941 Indian Four, Michael Smith’s 1935 Harley VLD , post-war bikes, classic Triumphs and BSAs through to the post classic with Norton Commandos and Ducatis well represented, not to mention a range of modern and late classic bikes.

The route took us through Cargo, stopping for morning tea at Canowindra and then southwards to Mandurama, with lunch and judging at Blayney Public School, returning to Camp Canobolas via Millthorpe and Orange. It was noted that several bikes were overheating on the return leg, necessitating a cooling stop outside the Millthorpe Hotel! Evening dinner was a great get together, with raffles and announcing of the winners.

Our thanks to all participants, marshals, the Orange Café Racer Club, sponsors, Blayney Public School , Canowindra Catholic Primary, Orange City Council and our hard-working planning team lead by Rick Kent. We look forward to seeing you again at the next 39th Rally to be held on the 15th and 16th of February 2020 – put it in your diary – its only 10 months away!

Illawarra Branch Minutes 11th February 2019

Meeting Opened: 8.02 pm Jim Cummins in the chair

Attendance: 72 + 2 visitors = 74

Apologies: Ron Foye, Norm and Judy Aldridge and Greg Loughnan

Visitors: Lew Truman, Mick Arts

New Members:

Correspondence In: “Tweelers” magazine and Macquarie Towns M.R & P. C. magazines, Entry form for CEMCC Red Scarf rally, Invitation to 34th Griffith ANZAC Rally 27/28 April., Invitation to Concord Heritage Festival 17th March focussing on 1920’s to 1940’s. (Anyone for a bike display?)

Previous Minutes: Moved (Mick Mellin/Steve Ansell) “..that the minutes are a true and accurate record of the meeting.” Passed.

Business Arising: President Jim gave a report of our attendance at the Sydney Branch meeting and expressed our moderate success and satisfaction with the results. Sydney seems more organised now and willing to become more social with other branches.

Treasurer: Balance at Jan.31st $13,276.95. Moved (Mick Mellin/Bill Furney) “ that the Treasurer’s report be accepted”. Passed. New Treasurer Joanne Dickie has taken over from February and already seems just as organised as prior holders of the Treasury.

Welfare Officer: Ron Foye has improved since he has returned to hospital.

History: Steve Ansell told of the recent death of Wagga Wagga bike shop owner Jim (?) Speers whose belongings are being auctioned off by Wagga Tip after being thrown out by his family. Many old parts and assemblies for Indian, Harley etc collected over decades are going to the highest bidder.

Library/Technical: Allan was bemused about the crankshaft on an Aerial being 10mm oversize. Could explain why the bike ran a little rough. Another problem of a bike running well until the rider mounted at which point the bike stopped. Fill the tank? Allan told of riding trails on a Yamaha RD250 less than successfully. Swapped to a proper trail machine (a BSA Bushman) which was worse.

Regalia Bill had jumpers and shirts with some classic belt buckles.

Rides

Dam Ride 16th Jan Third Wednesday of the month Dam Riders assembled at Key Batteries and left at 10:00 on a rather warm day. It was Damn HOT! Off up Mt Keira Rd , across to Mt Ousley and on to to enjoy the breeze. Pres Jim spent some time trying to persuade some Sydney riders to join our ride to no avail. So, off through the National Park to Waterfall, Heathcote, past the Atomic Energy Commission and down to Woronora River village. Coffee slaked the throats while the snags sizzled under the guidance of newly-certified chef Ray. Although no one took a swim, the river was still a pleasant place to be. We had 19 people on 18 bikes, 11 plated. Not bad for a steamy day. Next ride is 20th February to Geroa with a pick up at Albion Hotel. 10:00

start at Keys. 10:20 at Albion Park. Many thanks to the organisers, cook(s) and riders. Next ride Wednesday 20th.

Off-Road Ride Monday 28th was cancelled due to the unreasonable heat. Next ride on Meet behind Pheasants Nest Service centre Hume Highway at 9:30. Check with Ride group (Jim, Brian or Wayne ) before leaving for issues such as weather, fire concerns etc. that may impact on the ride.

Tortoise ride Sat.19th 20 riders and pillions rode to Killalea State Recreation Area south of Shellharbour. There were 15 bikes, 17 people, including 2 wives and 2 grandsons. 9 bikes were on plates and most were European. (After Brexit, will Northern Ireland bikes be European

Next ride Saturday 16thleaves Key Batteries at 1 p.m. for a Wollongong Wander.

Coffee Ride Mon. 21st Seven members and friends enjoyed the ride to Seascape Café for a coffee and a catch-up. Next ride February 25th .

First Wednesday Ride 6th Ludicrously hot!

Sunday Ride 20th This ride was small in number, (heat again!) but we enjoyed a ride to Shellharbour Village for refreshments, followed by a rural ramble finishing at the Annual Minis in the Gong car show at the NRMA Motorlife museum grounds. This event seems to grow each year.

Next ride Sunday 10th February was the day before our last meeting, so March 17th will leave Key’s at 10:00 to Robertson, Jamberoo, Kiama via Saddleback Mountain and home by suitable route. For details ring Mick Johnson 0419-297-171

Coming Events **For the latest correct/updated information on rides, look up the club site.**

General Business: Allan spoke to anyone with a wish to own a small old car. He knows of a restored Austin 7 (2 front seat passengers or 1 American) for sale. “It’s just like riding an old bike, but slower.”

Raffle: 1. Jeremy Knight 2. Ron Neale 3. Bernie Eather 4. Bob Warden 5. Merv Johnson 6. Glen Sutcliffe

Programme Officer: Lester introduced the Yamaha 250 from about 1963 in ridiculously original condition.

Illawarra Branch Minutes 11th March 2019

Meeting Opened: 8.00 pm Jim Cummins in the chair

Attendance: 55 + 5 visitors + 4 new members = 64

Apologies: Ron Foye, Norm and Judy Aldridge and Greg Loughnan

Visitors: Lew Truman, Mick Arts, Adrian Clayton, A. Van Bockel and I Southall

New Members: John & Roslyn Cooney, Allan Napier, Gavin Pollock

Correspondence In: “Tweelers” and Macquarie Towns M.R & P. C. magazines, Shannon’s Catalogue and invoice for P.O.Box.

Email from Garry Pearce of Kiama Classic M/C proposing reciprocal rides/runs. Discussion raised no objections. Riders would pay any ride fee and follow rules as would the members of the reciprocal club. (Just as we do now with other clubs.)

Previous Minutes: As few members had read the minutes online and they were not published in the clatter, they will be in the next clatter.

Business Arising: Nil

Treasurer: Balance at Feb.28th $13,37728. Moved (Mick Mellin/John Morris) “ that the Treasurer’s report be accepted”. Passed.

Welfare Officer: Lester updated members on the health of members. Ron Foye has returned to palliative care. Bob Vine has a heart issue and Peter Baumann suffering effects of cancer treatment.

History: Steve Ansell an apology.

Library/Technical: Allan made members aware of a book catalogue listing our book library which is quite extensive covering history, marques, workshop manuals etc. Magazine pile is melting or moving on in glacial fashion but it is decreasing. Feel free to take any that interest you.

Swap meet at Ballarat was held in very dusty conditions any business was minimal.

Regalia Bill and Marie have sloppy joes, name tags, shirts and belt buckles.

Events: **For the latest correct/updated information on rides, look up the club site.**

Rides Tim Seiber (Lester) reported on the Bert Munro weekend in New Zealand. One of our members over there organised bikes and paperwork so made things easy. Events held were speedway, hill climb, Drag racing, street and beach racing. Tide added a constantly changing course for the beach racing. Riders over there ride everything apparently regardless of age. One tip may be to avoid the barge trip to the North Island. Sounded rather archaic. Weather was good. Rained on 2 of 21 days.

Debenham Ride and Show Day dates are still to be confirmed.

Moved (Deliseo/Johnson) “that the Black Dog Ride this Sunday March 17th be a club ride. “ Passed.

Mick Johnson spoke briefly about the Streaky Bay ride leaving April 29th for about 2 weeks. See Mick or Jim for more details.

Dam Ride 20th Feb Third Wednesday of the month Dam Ride was a non -event due to the weather but a hardy group of 6 riders went on one anyway. Up Saddleback ended in a sojourn with 2 different clubs in the Warilla area. They only suffered light rain on their ride. Next ride will be on the 20th March To Nepean Dam. Keys at 10:00 please.

Tortoise ride Sat.16th There were 20 people including 2 of the fairer sex on 18 bikes with 12 on club plates. As there were 8 regulars on rides such as the Red Scarf, this was a terrific turnout. The group left Key Batteries at 1:20 headed for Regency Heights Estates and the delights of the Blue Jay Café. The group chose to split as some riders felt the expressway unsuitable and so took the Calderwood /Marshall Mount back way to the café. (It will be a policy in future that no more than 2 kms. of freeway conditions will be used.) Interestingly, the bike breakdown by make included 6 Britishers, 10 Japanese, 1 Spanish and 1 U.S. No Italian, German or Scandinavian in sight!

Next ride Saturday 16th March ride to Max Lopeman’s is cancelled.

Coffee Ride Mon. 25th Feb. 14 members and friends met outside the Sunrise Nursery Café at Helensburgh. As it was closed, the group moved to torn centre to the Diem Café. 7 bikes were plated with the oldest being Ian Richardson’s Matchless twin ridden from the Camden area accompanied by Paula on her latest acquisition, a Honda 500/4.Next ride March 25th meeting at Stanwell Park Beach Kiosk at 10:00am..

First Wednesday Ride 6th Report given to meeting. Next ride will be 3rd of April

Sunday Ride 17th March 17th will leave Key’s at 10:00 to Robertson, Jamberoo, Kiama via Saddleback Mountain and home by suitable route. For details ring Mick Johnson 0419-297-171

Orange Rally Report 15/17th This was attended by 8 of our members. Some trailered their machines to the Rally while others took the scenic route via Crookwell, Tuena (had a history lesson there) Blayney, Milthorpe and Orange. The rise took in Nashdale, Bowan Park, Cargo Canowindra, Blayney with morning tea provided by local schools. About 200kms all up on good roads and scenery. The event was well run by Orange Branch. Weekend total was about 900kms.

Red Scarf Rally Rally was well attended by Illawarra and Sydney branches. Rides were held on both days originating in Kiama. In excess of 50 bikes were entered and was a worthwhile rally to attend.

Coming Events **For the latest correct/updated information on rides, look up the club site.**

 Gosford Museum sale coming up.  Machinery show 30th March Braidwood.  Oberon 1st week November.  29th April ride interstate to Streaky Bay.  2-Stroke Tuesday Ride 12th March Useful mobile numbers for rides are President Jim 0414379419 or Wayne Martin on 0404353537

General Business: nil.

Raffle: 1. Alf Tremaine 2. Terry Campbell 3. Dick Kay 4. John Morris 5. Peter Marsellas 6. Allen Bennett

Programme Officer: Lester introduced the Tony Deliseo and his Honda CX 500. Tony knew his bike heritage well and enlightened us about its connections to such machinery as the CBX, Corvette, F1 engines etc and pointed out details like Honda’s first water cooled Vee twin and there being no kickstarter. The headlight can be replaced with a Jeep unit for improved efficiency and cost, retaining the original Stanley unit for historical accuracy when needed.

New Zealand National Motorcycle Rally February 2019

A group of Illawarra members & wives attended the 26th National Motorcycle Rally and after tour based in Blenheim, NZ during February which was held the weekend after the Bert Munro Festival; some members also attended this event. Our Kiwi resident CEMCC member Mike Becker & Maree hosted our visit and arranged the loan bikes - 4 BMWs, a ’77 T140 Silver Jubilee and a 350 Red Hunter Ariel from members of the Canterbury and Otago Branches of the VVMC of NZ.

The rally consists of a one-day ride on a choice of different routes, incorporating a timed section over which entrants are judged on their accuracy at attaining the average speed given in the rally pack. The Sunday event was a display of all bikes (about 200) at the Omaka airfield where we had discount entry to the remarkable museum set up by film director Peter Jackson in two halls; WW1 & WW2.

Field tests (Gymkhana) were to be held to determine the winning Branch, however these were abandoned due to the risk of grass fire, entrants could also enter their bikes in a concourse. The range of machines was quite extensive and the emphasis is definitely on riding them.

An after tour included Nelson where we visited two mind-blowing private collections, Picton, Havelock and a ride around the Sounds and south to the extensive wine fields finishing at Hamner Springs. Some members went to Kaikoura and others to Greymouth and Hokitika before returning to Christchurch.

Many new friends were made as well as many new memories of the great roads and scenery, all of the bikes finished the 2000 Km trip in fine style. Thank you to our Kiwi mates and we look forward to hosting you in the future.
