Kim Fleming spoke of lack of support from club members to fill key positions on committee and volunteer their time with ideas for events and rallies. Kim suggested memberships be controlled by branches and members data forwarded to head committee. Also the cost to produce a hard copy of the club magazine, the time spent putting into envelopes mailing takes a total of8 hours and mailing expense. Allan Smith put forward the clatter will have to go electronic in the near future. Jim Cummings asked what a minimum number of magazines the printer would print and costs, Allan Smith will get figures. Also Jim suggested sending Illawarra magazines to their branch , which can collected at branch meeting and balance distributed by their committee to their branch members. Allan Smith said sounds simple but the cost for printer to split packaged magazines and post to Sydney, Illawarra and Orange still attracts a cost to the club. He will investigate. Allan also suggested a workshop could be another means of distribution The discussion focused on the club web page, firstly improve its presentation and keep it up to date monthly. Jim said he would speak to Ian Richardson on this matter. Les Simons suggested 3 committee meetings a year which would involve branches attending to discuss club matters. Mick Mellin asked if membership details be forwarded to him for Illawarra branch. Shane gave us a tour of his new workshop, which included his Dyno Room, air conditioned engine assembly room, shop and general workshop areas. We have borrowed bikes. A DVD has been bought and will be shown at a future meeting. Braidwood. There were bikes from original to pristine, also choppers. About 100 bikes of all makes. Yes if the bike never had a sidecar before and no if there are lugs for a sidecar. Moved we ask Sydney about this. If you have a GS 500F can you please see Jim. Bruce Gow has passed away. His funeral is this week. Committee meeting in Sydney. Some went and again offered our help. Raffle: Allan Dystra, Ray Marshall, Ian Richardson, Glen Carn and Lee Jones. Programme Officer: Lester’s Kawasaki 2011 W800 was the featured bike tonight. When Kawasaki acquired Meguro in 1962 they inherited a design for a 500cc vertical twin based on the BSA A7, in 1967 they released a 650cc version, the BSA-styled timing side case looked like a Japanese “W”, so the model was designated W1, at the time the biggest capacity machine made in Japan. The bike was followed by W2 & W3 models which were already obsolete designs. In 1999 the firm introduced the W650, an overhead cam 8-valve retro styled machine, and this bike is a fuel injected version of that design with a capacity of 773cc, first to market in 2011. Lester has had the bike for 5 months, and is impressed by the feel of the long motor which is really tractable, comfortable riding position, and good handling at legal speeds. The Euro 4 design rules has meant the end of this model as far as Japanese manufacture is concerned, a “Final Edition” W800 is available overseas and there is talk of the design being made in India in the future. Next month: Ian will bring his 1981 Moto Guzzi, this bike is set up for endurance racing. Meeting Closed: 8.56pm Acting Secretary: Merle Graham.

THE FIRST STEVENS This family concern, the Stevens Motor Manufacturing Co., announced a new tricar, a motorette they called it, September, 1903. It was similar to the general run of tricars of the time, with the engine lying forward behind the front down tube of the frame. Now I think it is just possible that the engine may be the one which is in the A.J.S. museum. I cannot prove it, but my reasons are, I think, compelling. First, the Stevens Motor Manufacturing Co. were engine makers in those days (the A.J.S.) came later) and would probably do a one-off tricar (or have it made locally be the Wearwell Cycle people) to demonstrate their new line in water-cooled engines for tricars. Secondly, the engine position adopted behind the front down tube necessitated a clip at the cylinder head, and the exhibit illustrated in “one the Four Winds” has just that, while the word “Stevens” round the crankcase suggests a forward inclination of the engine, as originally fitted. Finally, at the Show at the end of the same year (1903) the engines, and various points of the design, were adopted by the Wearwell Co. for their 1904 Wolf tricar. But the engine was fitted upright in the middle of the frame, a position adopted by most makers for that year. A head clip was unnecessary, (for the following year, 1905. The Stevens tricar engine was a vertical twin, by the Way. Just suppose for moment I may be right. The original job would be kept around the factory for a while as a demonstration model for the many firms who were fitting proprietary engines in those days. Then, suddenly, the tricar died. Water cooling went with it, and the Stevens boys though up an amazing little air-cooled single. Jack Stevens road it around in competitions and gave it his initials, A.J.S. This article was the ideas of J.A. Sheldon. The start of A.J.S. Article taken from The Motor Cycle on the 23rd of August 1956.

RIDE REPORT - TASSIE TOUR, 19-29 March 2017 Having enjoyed the last Tassie Tour in 2013 riding our 1959 BSA A10, Sue & I were keen to enter the 2017 tour when it was announced. Sydney CEMCC member Peter Scott with Gail as pillion also entered on their 1957 Royal Enfield Constellation. Our Vintage Club friends Peter and Amanda Lakeman also went again on their unstoppable 1942 BSA M20, though a recent injury deprived poor Amanda from enjoying around 1,500km on the luxurious pillion seat … so she drove the car. For pre-1965 bikes this time, there were entrants from all states including WA, plus visitors from the UK and NZ. Around 20 Vincent owners entered including a couple of original series A models as well as new replicas. As a fan of girder fork bikes I was pleased by the number entered for 2017. There were three remarkable flat tank Nortons (including a pillion passenger on one), a Levis, 1920’s Scott Flying Squirrels, Rudge Ulster, HRDs, Ariels, BSAs and the oldest bike, a nicely restored 1926 EW Douglas (350cc, 2-speed). Surprisingly, there was only one Harley (1957 Hyda Glyde) and no Indians. There were breakdowns of course including flat batteries, punctures and a tyre blowout that fortunately ended well (heavy duty off-road tubes recommended) and an overnight head gasket repair that I heard about. The little Douglas’s rider thought his tour was over with a broken frame at Strahan. However, a long sturdy bolt inserted through the straight broken section kept him on the road to the end. The tour was expertly organized by an experienced team of enthusiasts from British Motorcycle Club of Tasmania who did a terrific job arranging the route, back-up vehicles, two dinners, a coffee van for morning tea at Helyer Gorge, lunch at Bushy Park showgrounds and a luggage truck that collected everyone’s bags each morning and delivered them to the next accommodation. What a great service! Unfortunately, things got off to a bad start on the very first ride, a short afternoon trip to Leven Canyon and back. On the return ride to Ulverstone a rider and passenger ended up in hospital after colliding with a car that turned across their path then stopped in the middle of the road. Also that day, a Vincent outfit overturned en-route to the rally via Cradle Mountain. From Ulverstone, the tour basically took an anti-clockwise route finishing with a farewell dinner back at Ulverstone 10 days later. Apart from Ulverstone, overnight stopovers included Stanley, Strahan (2 nights), Derwent Bridge/Bronte Park, Hobart (3 nights), Bicheno, and Scottsdale/Bridport, with ample time for sightseeing and side trips in between to add to the holiday atmosphere. At Strahan, Vincent enthusiast Peter Bender provided fresh salmon for a gourmet evening BBQ. The next day was ‘free’ so the Scotts gorged on cakes on the West Coast Wilderness Railway. At Hobart our bikes were lined up in front of Government House while riders perused Salamanca markets. Others rode up Mt Wellington where the weather obliged with great views, or were challenged by the exhibits at MONA. The following day, most people met at historic Salamanca Place for the organized day ride out past the Shot Tower and down ‘the channel’ to Huonville with the option of visiting Huon Aquaculture’s salmon hatchery or the fabulous ‘well-boat’ used for transferring young fish out to the maturing pens in the bay. Those visiting the hatchery watched salmon being graded, counted and transferred 10,000 at a time, into a converted milk tanker, whereas people at the boat watched the tanker unloading. Our thanks to Peter Bender and his people for this opportunity. If you have driven or, even better, ridden a motorcycle around Tasmania you will understand why it is a popular destination for motoring groups. There’s the beautiful scenery that changes over short travel distances, plenty of interesting things and places to see, ample accommodation and great food. I must mention Anver’s Chocolate factory at La Trobe (we only went there twice) and Burt Munro Café at Exeter. On our tour we came across a large contingent of about 17 Bugattis that had a couple of sporting Bentleys along for company, a group of Bristols including a magnificent polished aluminium bodied model, MGs, modern Ural outfits doing a ‘dirt roads only’ tour and Spyders. Tassie’s mix of twisty and open sweeping roads are great compared to many country ‘tracks’ on the mainland. However, several riders did manage to find the only pothole in Tasmania one day, and it was a decent sized surprise hidden in the shadows. My passenger let her displeasure be known. The weather in Tasmania can be fickle, but amazingly we only needed the wet-weather gear briefly a couple of times when it had been raining constantly for two weeks back in Sydney. How lucky can you get! All too soon our holiday was over, we loaded the bikes into the van and made our way back to the ferry. Graham Goodwin.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL of SPEED – EASTERN CREEK NSW : 23 – 26 MARCH 2017.

RING, RING, Hello Peter speaking, Hi is that Peter Martin? Yes. We want to invite you to ride your Ducati 999 with the Legends at the International Festival of Speed next March and to represent Ducati. Well um?... and so started an absolutely amazing and humbling adventure that culminated last weekend.

Let’s get this in perspective, I can ride a motorcycle and absolutely I can represent Ducati, but I am not a 'Legend' like the other riders invited to ride; Giacomo Agostini, Piero Laverda, Steve Parrish, Kevin Magee, Troy Bayliss, Graeme Crosby, Jeremy McWilliams, Maria Costello, Frankie Chilli and Cameron Donald so this was something very special.

The request that I ride the Ducati 999s required the bike be converted back from a road bike to a track bike, well visually anyway. The Ducati 1198s would be on Display and the back up just in case it rained as I had spare 1198 wheels and the wet set up.

I had not ridden the 999 since 2010 and had not ridden a bike since I stopped racing in 2013 so I expected to be rusty. The event was staged over 4 days of riding;

Thursday was the first day on track, it was practice and how I needed that practice. Two damp sessions then a video shoot for the IFoS Facebook page. I was far too polite and 'respectfully' held back, that lot are camera hogs... After so long in storage the M Real Estate Ducati 999s and 1198s had a few 'storage issues' and thanks to Terry Sutton and Geoff (Red) Whittaker the bikes were soon fettled and ready to ride and have fun. Thanks to the Ducati Owners Club of NSW support and encouragement, the Crew Shirts arrived and we looked like a Team.

Friday was another brilliant day at the IFoS, at the Briefing I shared a few laughs with Giacomo Agostini. Agostini is like Federer, he disarms and charms then irrespective of anything else, he takes every advantage on the track. Wonderful and inspirational. Slowly the Ducati 999 was getting sorted. After three years off a bike I was only 14 seconds behind the leaders at the end of 5 laps and I was still very green and not yet comfortable. The real talent was ahead and the older bikes behind, My riding was a work in progress and I had to be patient. I had a great chat with Piero Laverda the owner of Laverda and 'educated' him with some Australian slang. It was a great atmosphere at the IFoS, like a big family gathering, everyone here to have some fun.

Saturday the IFoS celebration of motorcycling was heating up and the crowd and atmosphere was building. So many great people popping in to say hello and take photos, it was a great atmosphere. With the Ducati 999 now sorted I could pay attention to riding. With a few clicks on the suspension and a foot control change, familiarity started to return. The 999s started to allow me to play, and in the Legends 'it's not a race', play I did... after Ago broke the start by half a lap (by agreement) we all got going. I gently worked my way forward and then realized that 'Sir' Alan Cathcart was behind me so I signaled him to pass. What a gift to be able to learn something from one of the top Bike Journos around. So smooth and practiced. I did not want to crowd him so gave a 100 meters start going onto the last lap and then chased him down passing Croz and Cam Donald on the way to finish 2 bike lengths adrift at the line (we were told “It is not a race” NOT – ha ha).

Sunday, the final day of celebration at the IFoS. It was time to have fun. So many amazing talented people willing to talk and share their experiences. The Media 'crush' when readying to go on track then three sessions filled with fun for the Legends. It was time to relax and enjoy the company and the Family of Motorcycling...Today was much easier and I felt much more comfortable on a bike but still uncomfortable in the company I was keeping. On the grid I saw Troy Bayliss with Maria Costello as a 'passenger'. I cracked up and was still laughing as Ago got his half Lap lead. I rode well within myself and got to respectfully follow the 'Don' of motorcycling for half a lap – blessed.

This weekend I have had the surreal privilege of sharing the track with some of the greats of our sport. I have had so much fun and enjoyed every moment. I have had many of those legends come over and chat, they welcomed me in to their world, and made me feel included. Pinch me, is this a dream.

I wish to thank all those who have made my participation possible; My thanks to the Organizers for inviting me to ride, to my Sponsors past and present for helping me and to the 'Rag Tag Mob' of Terry, Red, Bill, Harold and Judy for keeping me on track.

Thank you all for making it possible and for sharing the adventure with me.

NEXT: I have been invited to represent Ducati at the Broadford Bike Bonanza on Easter Weekend 14-16 April 2017. See you there.

The 36th Annual Orange Canobolas Country Bike Rally

We had a fantastic rally! The weather was great and with 140 keen participants, we were bound to have fun! Tents, trailers and caravans proliferated the site under the gum trees; the Central Coast guys were the first to unload and get loaded; the Griffith mob generally behaved themselves, as did most others. It was a great chance to catch up with old friends who come every year and this is the essence of our motorcycle clubs - friendship and a common interest in bikes, no matter what the age. That goes for the riders too!

Our first ride took us on a missing marshal mystery tour; however it made it all the more interesting! When you’re in Bathurst and you know morning tea is in Blayney, it doesn’t take long to work out that there’s been a stuff up! Nevertheless, our intrepid and intelligent riders found their way back to Blayney Public School for morning tea – thanks to the P&C for the fantastic catering – then off for a ride to Neville public school for an equally scrumptious lunch and judging. One rider, determined to follow protocol – that is, no marshal, go straight ahead, ended up at the Forest Reefs Pub! He was glad he followed the rules!

Sunday took us inland towards Manildra, the flour processing mecca of the Central West, then back towards Mount Canobolas through some fabulous country and Bowen Creek Road, with Cumulus and Canobolas Smith wineries close at hand, before returning to the Scout Camp.

We had a great dinner that night, with lots of lucky draws ( and lots of unlucky draws), however, the funds always go to a good cause such as the Scout Camp, Anson St Special School and Ronald McDonald House. Special thanks to John Dawson of Illawarra Club who kindly purchased at auction a bottle of whiskey for $200, the proceeds of which went to Ronald McDonald House! You’re a champ!

Once again, rallies just don’t occur – they’re the product of a lot of hard work, so our thanks go to our organising team, marshals, and Blayney and Neville Public Schools for their hospitality. See you in 2018! -David Scott, Secretary, Orange Branch, CEMMC.

Motorcycling NSW has abandoned plans for a motorsports complex at Yerriyong after the discovery of rare protected orchids on the site.

A statement issued by general manager David Cooke on Friday said challenges ranging from environmental roadblocks and opposition by locals meant the project was continually stalled.

Motorcycling NSW's Daniel Gatt talks with then Shoalhaven Mayor Joanna Gash after a sitting of the Joint Regional Planning Panel in June 2016.

“A few years ago the existence of an orchid protected under State and Federal law as a ‘vulnerable’ species was found on the site, prompting a revision of the plans at that time to allow a buffer zone around the plants,” Mr Cooke said. “In the last six months, further surveys by locals wanting to protect the site have uncovered more of the orchids, which brings the population to over 100, making it a significant population.”

He said the location of these orchids meant it was impossible to clear the site. ”This is a sad announcement for us, as it means the end of plans for a badly needed new road racing facility in NSW, and will also mean many of the plans we had for the existing Motocross facility at Yerriyong will also not go ahead, as they were dependent on the joint facility coming to fruition.”

Mr Cooke said Motorcycling NSW had spent well over $1 million on the proposal in the seven years it had been working on it. Wherever possible local consultants were employed to develop the plan.

He thanked supporters of the plan, including Joanna Gash, Ann Sudmalis, and the Shoalhaven City Council staff. He paid tribute to locals “who believed this project would be a win for the district and supported it”.

LOSSES AND LESSONS: BURNED-OUT BIKES TEACH A HARD LESSON IN TENDER CARE By: Jeff Peek VEHICLE INVOLVED: 1945 Harley-Davidson EL WHAT WENT WRONG: Losing everything in a house fire is a nightmare that you can never fully prepared for. The owner of a 1945 Harley-Davidson EL and 13 other classic had been accumulating project bikes, tools and spare parts for years. He enjoyed repairing and restoring the motorcycles as time and money allowed, and he typically left a half dozen or so connected to battery tenders in his garage. One night, one of the tenders sparked a fire that destroyed his home and all of its contents. Then things actually got worse … DAMAGE/LOSS: Thankfully, no one was injured in the fire. But then the owner learned that he was underinsured, and his emotional and financial burden grew. Although the Harley was insured through Hagerty – and the owner was paid its $30,000 Guaranteed Value – only two of the other 13 motorcycles were covered on a separate auto policy. And although the victim’s home insurance policy covered his house and its contents, the remaining bikes, spare parts and tools were not. LESSON: First of all, whenever you use a battery tender: Stick to “smart tenders,” which shut off automatically whenever the battery is full and turn back on when they sense a drop in voltage. They also shut off whenever a short is detected. If you don’t have a smart tender, unplug it if it will be left unattended for an extended period. Don’t overload plugs or circuits. Avoid using extension cords, but if you have no other option be sure to use a dropdown UL Listed cord reel as opposed to a small-gauge cord that runs along the floor and can be stepped on. Disconnect the battery from the car’s cables. Only the tender should be connected to the battery. Periodically check the tender and make sure it isn’t overly hot to the touch. And when it comes to insurance, never assume anything. Unsure what’s covered? Ask. In this case, the motorcycle owner properly insured three “finished” bikes and assumed that his homeowner’s policy would soften the blow if anything else in his garage was damaged. He was wrong. Do your homework and ask questions when it comes to what coverage is required. Hagerty offers additional coverage for automobilia, spare parts and tools, as well as vehicles under restoration. HONDA SHADOW CX500

What was new in 1978? The CX500 was a radical change of design for Honda. Specs were Vee Twin across the frame, engine is water cooled, pushrod operated, four valve heads which had the carbs pointed inwards to clear the rider’s knees, also shaft drive. A claimed power of 50 BHP at 9,000 RPM, using CDI ignition. Honda claimed a penthouse combustion chamber first. Did Rudge use that system in the thirties?
