Bruce Femister – August 3 rd to Tallangatta 15 Bikes left for a nice ride over Lockharts gap to Tallangatta for lunch. With some riders taking the long way home.

August 10 th – Stock ride Only two riders, Jim and Bruce

An appreciation was given by John McCluskey for all who attended Kevin “Grumpy” Romey’s funeral service on Saturday August 23 rd . There was over 60 bikes. A thank you to Paul Hare for speaking on behalf of the CEMCC club.

Katrina Dutton - August 24 th - Barnawartha Hotel, via Yackandanda This ride was dedicated to the late Kevin “Grumpy” Romey. Six bikes met at the Gateway Village car park. Five bikes departed for the ride, with two by two up. Mark wasn’t confident to ride the Harley the distance we were riding. So he met us in Barny. We headed out around Doctors point and then on past the Hume weir. With John McCluskey leading the ride on the “Grumpy” BMW K75RT . A scenic ride to Yackandanda where we took a pit stop due to electrical gremlins in the Honda.. (they disappeared) We mounted back up with Ron having a little trouble getting his CBR 1000 off the side stand… Not a good idea to rest the big girl on a slight hill Ron.. We continued onto Stanley where we had another pit stop whilst everyone caught up. Here we met up with some other riders who had stopped at the Stanley Hotel only to find that the owners had gone on annual leave. So we invited them to join us in Barny for lunch. We arrived in Barny and met up with other club members for lunch. A great meal and yarns. With everyone making their own way home John swapped machines with us for the ride from Barny to Rutherglen. The Honda 900 for the “Grumpy” BMW. Wow… the BMW…. What an experience… Thanks John. A FANTASTIC RIDE AND A FANTASTIC DAY.

A longer ride through Swamp Road, Jamberoo Pass and Robertson to a soup stop at Fitzroy Falls was attended by the majority of riders whilst a short run to Killalea & Kiama catered for the others. Jim Cummins and his marshals directed the long run; Kevin Brown led the short route, both returning to the picturesque Don’s Farm for lunch and the presentation which brought favourable comment from all. Our branch is extremely fortunate in having members who put their hand up to help in the many jobs to be done for the rally to succeed each year, many thanks to you all. Unfortunately Sunday was a complete washout. A list of category winners follows; don’t forget that our rally next year will be held at the same time of year but in the Camden -The Oaks general area.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR.

I write this letter as a challenge to CEMCC members and I am playing devil's advocate. This letter is not particularly aimed at the branches of the CEMCC, I don't know your people or your member participation, but you could certainly take my comments on board. This letter is not pointed at long standing members who don't ride anymore or have "done their bit" for the Club over the years. This note is pointed at Sydney area members, rightly or wrongly.

I joined the CEMCC to ride my Classis Motorcycle in the company of other likeminded people, knowing I would meet others and participate in Club activities including gazetted rides, social events and Club meetings. Then I found out about the odd weekend away and the Club Rally and if I wished, I could go to other Clubs Rallies, oh what joy ! I have met people who travel over an hour to a Saturday or Sunday ride, just to get to the start point. That is what I call a keen Club member.

Have I mentioned that as a member of the CEMCC, I can get Conditional Registration for my motorcycle ( I have full rego on my TR6R), what a bonus, Cheap rego! There are approximately 200 member in the Sydney area, we see about 25 members at a monthly meeting, we see about 10-15 turn out to Club rides, and with a few exceptions, the same members most of the time.

I pose a question for you, are you a Club participant or do you belong to get the Conditional plate and ride at your leisure? (and may I point out that this is illegal, riding unregistered and uninsured). We are struggling to get people to fill Committee positions. When you are riding around on your Conditional plate bike, do you consider that the Club needs people in Club positions to make the Club run so you can ride your Classic bike. The Club runs on the participation of members, are you a participant or a user of the system? It is not too late to change, we are looking to fill Committee positions at the AGM later this year. We are always looking for more Members to turn up for Club rides and activities...if this is not you, why are you a member of the CEMCC?

Vale Kevin Romey

4/2/1937 – 17/8/2014

Kevin was a Fitter and Machinist by trade. His business ventures included a Garage in Rutherglen for a very short period when first married, Fire wood and railway sleeper cutting, Hay and wheat carting, Emu farming.

He and Elsie had 3 children Winston, Lorna and Christopher. Five grandsons Arron, Joshua, Daniel, Russell and Adam and 4 great grandchildren. Kevin was proud of his family he looked upon his children as his best friends; he really enjoyed attending rallies and rides accompanied by his sons.

He also played many a round of golf with Winston at a time when Golf had become his preferred sport. Sometimes taking his grandsons out onto the course for a hit. Accompanied by Elsie he travelled around Australia towing a caravan and enjoyed many other caravanning holidays.

Kevin was a foundation member of The Corowa Motor Sports Club which started as a social club. 1/4/51, with the first meeting conducted on 27/3/53. He raced bikes and cars for some years in the company of best friend, Robert Mills. One of the cars he raced was an Austin Seven he also had a TQ fitted with a Ariel Square Four motor , Two Bedsteads which were stripped down cars, one a Rover and another a Ryley He also rode at other dirt track meetings. Later he had a short stint of racing on sealed tracks Winton etc. The cost involved with this type of racing was prohibitive and unaffordable when raising a young family. He retired from this activity.

He was also an Ulyssian, member number 14286. He attended many Ulysses AGMs and Oddisys, all over the country. Sometimes accompanied by Elsie who he encouraged some 30 years ago to become independent and gain a bike licence, a decision he may have lived to regret. He and Elsie were due to depart for Alice Springs to attend the 2014 AGM when Kevin was diagnosed with an advanced cancer. He commenced treatment within days. Kevin kept a positive attitude; he was th intent on once more attending The Ghost Town Rally on September 12 2014, which is held annually at Copy Hollow near Menindee and then the plan was to travel on to Cameron’s Corner. He was to travel with his brother Laurence and Ron Smith (Smithy) from Yenda, his and Elsie’s frequent travelling companion. This was also not to be.

Kevin was a founding member of the Alb/ Wod branch of the Classic & Enthusiasts Club which was formed in approx. 1984. He loved to ride with the boys particularly in the early days of the Alb/Wod. Branch. He readily shared his knowledge of British bikes, particularly of the AJS & Matchless mark. He also shared his speciality tools not usually found in a club man’s tool kit, did repairs or manufactured parts for his fellow members, this he found a pleasure to provide.

The members of the Alb/Wod branch of the C&EMCC and his many other friends were a great support network for him and Elsie during his last weeks.

He will be very much missed by his family and friends.

May He Rest In Peace. Vale Kevin Romey

May He Rest In Peace. Queensland The owner of a golf course on the Gold Coast was confused about paying an invoice, so he decided to ask his secretary for some mathematical help.

He called her into his office and said, “You graduated from the University of Queensland in accountancy and I need some help. If I was to give you $20,000, minus 14%, how much would you take off?” The secretary thought a moment, and then replied, “Everything except my earrings.” Tasmania A senior citizen in Tasmania was overheard saying, “When the end of the world comes, I hope to be here.”

When asked why, he replied, “I’d rather be in Tasmania ‘cause everything happens in Tasmania 20 years later than the rest of the world.” Northern Territory The young man from NT came running into the store and said to his mate, “Johnno, somebody just stole your ute from the parking lot!” Johnno replied, “Did ya see who it was?”

The young man answered, “I couldn’t tell, but I got the licence number.”

Western Australia

A WA highway patrol pulled over a car on the main road. The copper asked, “Got any ID?”

The driver replied, “about what?” Victoria The copper pulled up next to the guy unloading garbage out of his ute into the ditch. The copper asked, “Why are you dumping garbage in the ditch? Don’t you see that sign right over your head.”

“Yep,” he replied. “That’s why I’m dumpin’ it here, ‘cause it says: ‘Fine For Dumping Garbage.’”

With poor weather forecast indicating that showers could possibly be inflicted upon the Saturday runs, a group of around the ninety mark gathered at the staging point of the Warilla Bowling Club, with the majority being well equipped for whatever the weather wished to bring on. Macquarie Towns Club had their usual good representation, whilst other clubs with attendees were Velocette, Vintage Japanese, Bundanoon Bike Club, Singleton Classic, V & H, Illawarra Classic, Albury Wodonga C.E.M.C.C., Ulysses and Bathurst Panorama.

It must be noted that both the Saturdays runs were completed in dry conditions, and both liaised at Don’s farm, (at the bottom of the old Huntley Hillclimb), for the lunch break - this year combined with the raffle and the bike judging, the short run was organized by Kevin Brown and his able assistant in the sidecar, Karen and no one got lost, whilst the long run to the Tablelands was also completed without too much angst.

The Sunday run – to be taken over a coastal route – saw a complete washout, as the promised rainstorm arrived with a vengeance and dissuaded any enthusiast from participating, so – in retrospect – the rally organizers would have been truly thankful to complete the main day of the event before the deluge arrived. In retrospect, it would appear that the 2014 annual event was not as well supported by the Illawarra Branch of the C.E.M.C.C. as has been the case in the previous years, and as this area can boast a membership listing of around the two hundred mark, its obvious that there probably needs to be more support from local members to return the rally numbers to the halcyon days of the decades both sides of the millennium change. Obviously a lift in support from the locals is what’s needed!

Mid-week run September. The start of spring was obviously meant to indicate warmer sunny dry days for motorcyclists but this only lasted one day (Monday 1 st ), as the Tuesday saw heavy rain conditions and Wednesdays forecast was for gale force winds and rain. Consequently only around ten hardy souls fronted up to Mt Keira Rd. In cloudy and very windy conditions for the run, programmed to go up on the Tablelands and thence to culminate at Robertson Pie Shop for lunch. Convenor Ron organized, (per phone), for the mountain riders to link up at Picton for the lunch break, and this worked out OK with a final attendance of sixteen at the midday venue. Full marks to the hardy souls who attended in suspect conditions, (especially Joanne Dickie), and the good thing was that they escaped with only a few drops falling on them as they returned down Macquarie Pass. Lets hope that there are much warmer days ahead – especially for the 2014 Annual Showday on Sunday 21 st September, once again to be held at the Engadine reserve where – many years

ago – Barry Jarvis organized the venue which proved such a success in consequent stagings. Saturday 30 th August saw an “eleventh hour” static display organized to take place in the Bunnings car park North Wollongong and considering that the event had no time – or opportunity – to organize any publicity the turn-out of twenty one machines was a credit to all those who took part. It was instigated by club member Kevin Brown’s son Troy – who is a manager at Bunnings – and he invited the club to put on a display of machines from 10am to 2pm. In conjunction with a sausage sizzle which was sited in close proximity. To be honest, the day was very drab – weather wise – with mist and light rain falling at different times of the display. However a shelter was made available, and riders could gather together and stay under cover if they desired. The exhibition of the 21 machines gave an excellent cross section of years, ranging from a 1937 Harley right through A.J.S., Matchless, Triumph, B.S.A., Norton, B.M.W., etc of the fifties and sixties through to the more modern classics. To be commended were Ron Hodge and Allan Graham, who rode down from the Tablelands in unattractive conditions, (well done). Also noted were a few, rather rare A.J.S. and Matchless competition machines organized by convenor Kevin and very much appreciated by the interested spectators – especially when he fired up the Rickman Metisse A.J.S. motored specialist scrambler, which – with a straight through engine pipe shook all the leaves from the carpark trees. The exhibition would have to be regarded as a resounding success, and many thanks to Troy Brown, (Bunnings), for the invitation – plus quite a few free coffees and biscuits. Convenor Kevin Brown worked very hard in the short time frame available via e-mail, phone, text etc to drum up support, and on a dry day many more could have attended, but nevertheless an excellent result and food for thought for the future. So thanks K.B. for the effort at short notice. Incidentally it has not gone unnoticed, that for the last couple of years the standard Fathers Day Exhibition in the Wollongong Mall on the Saturday prior to the F.D. Sunday has – unfortunately – had to be curtailed due to major renovations to the whole of Wollongong Central Business District and in the interim we, (the Illawarra C.E.M.C.C. Branch), have lost the connection with the Mall people and may not be able to get back on line with anyone to be able to arrange any Mall Exhibitions in the future.

So memo to Mr Brown:- Would you consider doing this Bunnings Exhibition on an Annual basis, which could nicely slot in as a replacement for the Mall display, and plug in a current gap in the agenda of the second half of the year. I’m sure the branch would endorse this idea! Free Ads Sell Swap, Lost and found Wanted, Exchange, and Help! Ron Davis’ Triumph The above photo shows one of several Triumphs restored to a very high standard by Ron Davis, a C&EMCC member who sadly passed away recently. Ron was always at the Illawarra Branch meetings and ready to help with advice as well as providing his machines any time a display was organized – see the last Clatter for Ron’s eulogy .
