ANNUAL THEME: Tomorrow through the Past CONvergence 2011 will be a four-day celebration of Yesterday’s Visions of Tomorrow. Will there be Steampunk? Of course. But this theme is more than that. The first Tomorrowland opened at Disneyland on July 18, 1955, depicting a city of the futuristic year of 1986, the year Halley’s Comet would next appear. Visions of the fu- ture date quickly. We have communications technology undreamed of a few decades ago, but you still hear endless pining for the flying cars and rocket packs that haven’t materialized. Metaphors aside, 1984 came and went free of Orwell’s dystopia, the moon was not flung off into space in 1999, and there were no Pan Am flights to our space station to discuss the monolith found in the moon in 2001. These visions are no longer of what might be, but are instead of what might have been, yet they’re no less compelling. We love Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, The Jetsons, and Buck Rogers, even though they are more of the Table of Contents era in which they were made than the era they try to depict. In 1983, she co-founded ‘Til Tuesday, a new-wave band that found success with its first album, Voices Carry. The title track became an MTV favorite, winning the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, propelling Mann and the band into the spotlight. After releasing three albums with the group, she broke up the band and embarked on a solo career. Her first solo album, Whatever, was a more introspective, folk-tinged effort than ‘Til Tuesday’s albums, and received uniformly positive reviews upon its release in the summer of 1993. Mann’s song “Save Me” from the soundtrack to the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia was nominated for an Academy® Award and a Grammy®.

  • From Voodoo to Viruses: the Evolution of the Zombie in Twentieth Century Popular Culture
From Voodoo to Viruses: The Evolution of the Zombie in Twentieth Century Popular Culture By Margaret Twohy Adviser: Dr. Bernice Murphy A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the Degree of Master’s of Philosophy in Popular Literature Trinity College Dublin Dublin, Ireland October 2008 2 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to explore the evolutionary path the zombie has followed in 20th Century popular culture. Additionally, this thesis will examine the defining characteristics of the zombie as they have changed through its history. Over the course of the last century and edging into the 21st Century, the zombie has grown in popularity in film, videogames, and more recently in novels. The zombie genre has become a self-inspiring force in pop culture media today. Films inspired a number of videogames, which in turn, supplied the film industry with a resurgence of inspirations and ideas. Combined, these media have brought the zombie to a position of greater prominence in popular literature. Additionally, within the growing zombie culture today there is an over-arcing viral theme associated with the zombie. In many films, games, and novels there is a viral cause for a zombie outbreak. Meanwhile, the growing popularity of zombies and its widening reach throughout popular culture makes the genre somewhat viral-like as well. Filmmakers, authors and game designers are all gathering ideas from one another causing the some amount of self- cannibalisation within the genre. 3 Table of Contents Introduction 4 Chapter One 7 Evolution of the Dead Chapter Two 21 Contaminants, Viruses, and Possessions—Oh my! Chapter Three 34 Dawn of the (Digital) Dead Chapter Four 45 Rise of the Literary Zombie Conclusion 58 Bibliography 61 4 Introduction There are perhaps few, if any fictional monsters that can rival the versatility of the humble zombie (or zombi)1.

What Happens When You Put 2,000 Nerds on a Boat? - The New... https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/06/travel/joco-cruise-jonathan... What Happens When You Put 2,000 Nerds on a Boat? You get the JoCo Cruise, and it’s an annual gathering for those who love sci-fi, games with many-sided dice and the musician Jonathan Coulton. By John Schwartz May 6, 2019 It is the first concert of the JoCo Cruise 2019, and things are going so wrong. The musicians can’t hear themselves sing. Instruments drop out at random. One of the performers, Jim Boggia, has lost his voice. Jonathan Coulton, the singer-songwriter for whom the cruise is named, grouses that it is a “train wreck on a boat.” They carry on, trying to wrestle a show from the mess. Mr. Boggia starts playing “When You Wish Upon a Star” on his ukulele and raspily invites us all to sing along. The assembled hundreds join in a mass mumble, but one woman’s voice stands out and confidently rises, clear and lovely. Paul Sabourin, another of the performers, hops off the stage and hands her a microphone. The performers complete the song to rousing cheers. I spot the singer. She is wearing extravagantly long elf ears. Now in its ninth year, the JoCo Cruise is a grand annual gathering of the nerd tribe. You may not have heard of Mr. Coulton, who left his job writing software in 2005 to explore a music career, but he has built a fervid online community of 1 of 14 What Happens When You Put 2,000 Nerds on a Boat? - The New..

THAT STATEMENT CONNECTS the modern Steam Punk Movement, The Jetsons, Metropolis, Disney's Tomorrowland, and the other items that we are celebrating this weekend. Some of those past futures were unpleasant: the Days of Future Past of the X-Men are a shadow of a future that the adult Kate Pryde wanted to avoid when she went back to the present day of the early 1980s. Others set goals and dreams; the original Star Trek gave us the dreams and goals of a bright and shiny future t h a t h a v e i n s p i r e d generations of scientists and engineers. Robert Heinlein took us to the Past through Tomorrow in his Future History series, and Asimov's Foundation built planet-wide cities and we collect these elements of the past for the future. We love the fashion of the Steampunk movement; and every year someone is still asking for their long-promised jet pack. We take the ancient myths of the past and reinterpret them for the present and the future, both proving and making them still relevant today. Science Fiction and Fantasy fandom is both nostalgic and forward-looking, and the whole contradictory nature is in this year's theme. Many of the years that previous generations of writers looked forward to happened years ago; 1984, 1999, 2001, even 2010. The assumptions of those time periods are perhaps out-of-date; technology and society have passed those stories by, but there are elements that still speak to us today. It is said that the Golden Age of Science Fiction is when you are 13.

FEAR AND LOATHING: SHAME, SHAMING, AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY Elizabeth L. Rosenblatt* INTRODUCTION Shame is civilizing. It is the governing drive of conscience; if people had no shame, the rule of law would lose much of its power, and might would often mean right. Shaming—the public attempt to impose shame on others—is an equally important driver of behavior. People strive to avoid humiliation and the loss of reputation; we steer clear of “bad” behaviors even if they would benefit us. In the words of Seneca the Younger, “Shame can forbid sometimes what the law does not.”1 Shame and shaming are crucial to our understanding of intellectual property law and norms, and yet they have gone largely unexplored in the intellectual property literature. Many scholars have examined in- tellectual property norms and how they interact with the law.2 But it is not enough to point out that someone acts a certain way because of norms; we must also understand the motivational forces that drive people to conform.

[theme music, "(It's a) Departure" by The Long Winters, plays] Justin: Hello, everybody, and welcome to My Brother, My Brother and Me, an advice show for the modern era. Travis: Doesn‘t sound like Jeremy Lenno at all. Griffin: No, it‘s me, Jeremy Lenno. You heard this story, uh... Justin: Paul Gosar is a congressman in Arizona, and um, he is running for reelection against a Mr. Brill, and... Griffin: I believe it‘s a Dr. Brill. Justin: Doctor, if you will.
