Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium
Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century. -
Geek Policing: Fake Geek Girls and Contested Attention
International Journal of Communication 9(2015), 2862–2880 1932–8036/20150005 Geek Policing: Fake Geek Girls and Contested Attention JOSEPH REAGLE1 Northeastern University, USA I frame the 2012–2013 discourse about “fake geek girls” using Bourdieu’s theory of fields and capital, complemented by the literature on geeks, authenticity, and boundary policing. This discourse permits me to identify the reciprocal relationship between the policing of identity (e.g., Am I a geek?) and the policing of social boundaries (e.g., Is liking an X-Men movie sufficiently geeky?). Additionally, geekdom is gendered, and the policing of fake geek girls can be understood as a conflict over what is attended to (knowledge or attractiveness), by whom (geekdom or mainstream), and the meaning of received attention (as empowering or objectifying). Finally, despite the emergence of a more progressive and welcoming notion of geeks-who-share, the conversation tended to manifest the values of dominant (androcentric) members. That is, in a discourse started by a woman to encourage other women to be geeky, some of the loudest voices were those judging women’s bodies and brains according to traditionally androcentric and heteronormative values. Consequently, in this boundary and identity policing, women faced significant double binds, and the discourse exemplified a critical boomerang in which a critique by a woman circled back to become a scrutiny of women by men. Keywords: authenticity, boundaries, capital, geek, gender, policing, subculture In March 2012, Tara Tiger Brown (2012), a self-described “tech entrepreneur, educator and opinion writer,” wrote an article entitled “Dear Fake Geek Girls: Please Go Away.” The article prompted much discussion, generating 250 comments below the article itself as well as thousands of comments elsewhere. -
What Does Gender Mean in Regendered Characters

Regendered works, such as the TV series Elementary, illustrate the complexity of representation, and the ongoing imbalanced landscape of media. I develop a more cohesive understanding of the fannish counterpublic and its complex approaches to creativity and gender by grounding the research and data collection in fan studies, gender studies, and literary theory. This thesis uses interviews, surveys, and observations of fannish communities, and close readings of regendered texts and media, to develop two theories of regendered effects. One: the position of regendered work within fannish counterpublics is one centred on the conflicts and tensions between lived experiences and the media landscape, performed through the creative forms that characterise their communities. Fannish experiences of gender and sexuality influence their reception of those works, and how they practice regendering as a creative process. Two: these works then reinforce that counterpublic by correcting the gender imbalance of the initial work, and re-othering the expectations of that work. -

After releasing three albums with the group, she broke up the band and embarked on a solo career. Her first solo album, Whatever, was a more introspective, folk-tinged effort than ‘Til Tuesday’s albums, and received uniformly positive reviews upon its release in the summer of 1993. The Opposed Mark Complies with the Agreement A. Socks, Leggings, and Leg Warmers are not Footwear In view of the Agreement’s plain language, Meynard’s position that the Opposed Mark violates the Agreement is unreasonable. First, Meynard’s assertion that “socks”, “leg warmers” and “leggings” are “footwear of any type” is without merit. The Oxford English dictionary defines footwear as “outer coverings for the feet, such as shoes, boots and sandals”. (Exhibit A.) While socks are worn on the feet, they are not outer coverings for the feet and therefore “socks” are not “footwear of any type”. -
INTRODUCTION 1 Ryptic Vault Is a Company That Focuses on Creating Games to Be Played on the Ctable with Others
INTRODUCTION 1 ryptic Vault is a company that focuses on creating games to be played on the Ctable with others. To achieve this, I had to run through a process that is ever expanding. First, we had to research the market and history of tabletop gaming to see what is trending and what our potential competition are doing. Along the way, questions as well as assumptions and answers to some of those questions were covered and Cryptic Vault began to establish self-identity. This includes goals, stance on the market, logos, and the games that will be produced. This process books showcases this process and helps unravels the secrets that lie ahead for Cryptic Vault’s future. From Voodoo to Viruses: the Evolution of the Zombie in Twentieth Century Popular Culture
From Voodoo to Viruses: The Evolution of the Zombie in Twentieth Century Popular Culture By Margaret Twohy Adviser: Dr. Bernice Murphy A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the Degree of Master’s of Philosophy in Popular Literature Trinity College Dublin Dublin, Ireland October 2008 2 Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to explore the evolutionary path the zombie has followed in 20th Century popular culture. Additionally, this thesis will examine the defining characteristics of the zombie as they have changed through its history. Over the course of the last century and edging into the 21st Century, the zombie has grown in popularity in film, videogames, and more recently in novels. The zombie genre has become a self-inspiring force in pop culture media today. Films inspired a number of videogames, which in turn, supplied the film industry with a resurgence of inspirations and ideas. Combined, these media have brought the zombie to a position of greater prominence in popular literature. Additionally, within the growing zombie culture today there is an over-arcing viral theme associated with the zombie. In many films, games, and novels there is a viral cause for a zombie outbreak. Meanwhile, the growing popularity of zombies and its widening reach throughout popular culture makes the genre somewhat viral-like as well. Filmmakers, authors and game designers are all gathering ideas from one another causing the some amount of self- cannibalisation within the genre. 3 Table of Contents Introduction 4 Chapter One 7 Evolution of the Dead Chapter Two 21 Contaminants, Viruses, and Possessions—Oh my!
