Hugos Ceremony
“World Science Fiction Society”, “WSFS”, “World Science Fiction Convention”, “Worldcon”, “NASFiC”, “Hugo Award”, and the distinctive design of the Hugo Award Rocket are service marks of the World Science Fiction Society, an unincorporated literary society. Loncon 3 is the trading name of London 2014 Ltd, a company limited by guarantee and registered in England. Company number: 7989510. Registered Office: 176 Portland Road, Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, NE2 1DJ Front cover design: Vincent Docherty 2/2014 Hugo Awards Ceremony Good Evening Welcome to the 2014 Hugo Awards Ceremony, being held as part of the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention, Loncon 3, in London at the ExCeL Exhibition Center. Although the stage tonight has a very British feel (well, London at least), this ceremony celebrates the worldwide appeal of science fiction. Presenting awards tonight, there are guests from Britain and America, but also Nigeria, China, Canada, and even Australia – just to mention a few of the countries as the members of this convention come from all over the globe – and our list of nomi- nees hail from around the world too. However, it is not just the geographical diversity of our field that we celebrate tonight – it’s the diversity within fandom. Although you might not like the styles of all of the nominated works and you might not choose to read all the myriad sub-genres that exist within speculative fiction, tonight they have their place as Hugo Award nominees, chosen by the community of fans. As Ray Bradbury put it, “Anything you dream is fiction, and anything you accomplish is science. -

SEARCHING FOR SUPERWOMEN: FEMALE FANS AND THEIR BEHAVIOR _______________________________________ A Thesis presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School at the University of Missouri-Columbia _______________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts _____________________________________________________ by SOPHIA LAURIELLO Dr. Cynthia Frisby, Thesis Supervisor DECEMBER 2017 The undersigned, appointed by the dean of the Graduate School, have examined the thesis entitled SEARCHING FOR SUPERWOMEN: FEMALE FANS AND THEIR BEHAVIOR presented by Sophia Lauriello, a candidate for the degree of master of arts, and hereby certify that, in their opinion, it is worthy of acceptance. Professor Cynthia Frisby Professor Amanda Hinnant Professor Lynda Kraxberger Professor Brad Desnoyer FEMALE FANS AND THEIR BEHAVIOR ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to acknowledge Dr. Cynthia Frisby for all of her work and support in helping this thesis go from an idea to a finished paper. Thank you to everyone on my committee who was as enthused about reading about comic books as I am. A huge acknowledgement to the staff of Star Clipper who not only were extremely kind and allowed me to use their game room for my research, but who also introduced me to comic book fandom in the first place. A thank you to Lauren Puckett for moderating the focus groups. Finally, I cannot thank my parents enough for not only supporting dropping out of the workforce to return to school, but for letting me (and my cat!) move back home for the last year and a half. Congratulations, you finally have your empty nest. ii FEMALE FANS AND THEIR BEHAVIOR TABLE OF CONTENTS ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS ............................................................................................... -

But yeah, he did, slapping that astral avenger smack dab in the middle of the Forever People. Said quintet of space hippies were the junior partners in Kirby’s Fourth World saga. Published by DC in the early 1970s, it was an epic that sprawled across four titles. In those comics, Kirby’s indefatigable imagination spun off one amazing character after another. The least of these was Forager. Introduced in New Gods #9 June-July 1972 (below) Forager was a Bug. Semi-human insectoids who scavenge a sorry lif from the scraps of New Genesis, home of the New Gods, the Bugs wer Kirby’s way of showing that even Utopia isn’t perfect. Such was the pow- er of the King’s ideas that characters like Bug which failed in their day have led second lives thanks to later generations of fans turned pro. His Ed Piskor is the cartoonist behind the award-winning series Hip Hop Family Tree (available from Northside). The influence of Mar- vel comics always showed in Piskor’s art, but no one knew how intense the connection between the alternative star and the House of Ideas truly was. Piskor learned how to chase down the details of rap history thanks to his life-long immersion in the complicated lore of the X-Men. -

22 TIGHTBEAM Those multiple points of connection—and favorites—indicate the show’s position of preference in popular culture, and Tennant said he’s consistently surprised by how Doctor Who fandom and awareness has spread internationally—despite its British beginnings. “Doctor Who is part of the cultural furniture in the UK,” he said. “It’s something that’s uniquely British, that Britain is proud of, and that the British are fascinated by.” Now, when Tennant is recognized in public, he can determine how much a fan of the show the person is based on what they say to him. “If someone says, ‘Allons-y!’ chances are they’re a fan,” he said. Most people say something like, “Where’s your Tardis?” or “Aren’t you going to fix that with your sonic screwdriver?” There might be one thing that all fans can agree on. Perhaps—as Tennant quipped—Doctor Who Day, Nov. 23 (which marks the airing of the first episode, “An Unearthly Child”) should be a national holiday. Regardless of what nation—or planet—you call home.
