 Mr. Tillerson joined in 1975 as a production engineer and rose to become CEO of one of America's great companies, employing more than 70,000 people. His tenacity, broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics make him an excellent choice to implement President-elect Trump’s agenda on the world stage.  In his new role as America’s top diplomat, He will be in charge of advancing America’s core national interests, promoting regional stability, and working to ease tensions around the world while maintaining America’s national security.  President Obama's first Secretary of Defense -- who also served under President Bush - - is the one who initially recommended Mr. Tillerson to the President-elect.

Skillset:

 Decision-making o Mr. Tillerson is a world-class deal-maker. o He has completed successful multilateral and bilateral negotiations on deals involving many countries. o He has earned a reputation for being a tough negotiator, but when he makes an agreement, you can take it to the bank.  Relationships o His relationships in some countries extend back multiple administrations and regimes. While the political leadership has changed, his relationships with the business leaders have endured. In some cases he has more institutional knowledge than the current government. o For example, he has know the current ambassador of one Gulf State since he was just a note-taker for the crown prince. o He has been able to tell President Putin “no,” but has also been able to work with him. That’s because of the longstanding relationship. People know he’s sincere, and his word is solid.  Keen insight into geopolitics o He spent about ⅔ of his time in over one two-year period. o He has spent a lot of time in many of the current security “hot spots," including . o He can speak first-hand about how radical Islamic terrorism has hurt people all over the world and threatens to destabilize countries and regions.

Big picture:

 Mr. Tillerson agrees with President-elect Trump that we should maintain good relationships with any countries and leaders who desire a good relationship with us and are verified to be acting in good faith.  He will restore the credibility the United States has lost under the current administration by keeping the commitments the US makes.  He knows how to manage a global enterprise with many offices in different time zones, which is crucial to running a successful State Department.

Russia

 Mr. Tillerson’s experience with Russia and the Russian president will prove to be invaluable. President Putin knows Mr. Tillerson means what he says.  He will be able to work closely with Russia and others to focus on our goal of defeating radical Islam.  Mr. Tillerson will easily challenge Russia and other countries when necessary.  While he was a businessman, Mr. Tillerson was a forceful advocate for the interests of his company, employees and shareholders. As Secretary of State, he will be a forceful advocate for America’s interests. The American people will once again have a world-class player working on their behalf.

Middle East and ISIS

 There is no way Mr. Tillerson, a top-tier negotiator, would have been foolish enough to sign the nuclear deal, one of the worst deals ever negotiated by the United States. Mr. Tillerson has successfully used leverage in negotiations in the past and will bring that experience to pressure Iran to end its nuclear program.  He will work with our allies and friends in the Middle East to defeat ISIS.  Mr. Tillerson will maintain the special relationship between the United States and Israel. There will continue to be extraordinary strategic, technological, military and intelligence cooperation between the two countries.  Mr. Tillerson also has experience in the Caspian region and Yemen, among other geographies. He has first-hand knowledge of the toll that radical Islam has taken on the broader Middle East and the threat the Islamist political ideology poses to the West.  Mr. Tillerson will play a key role in defeating the ideology of radical Islamic terrorism, just as we won the Cold War.

Bio:

A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Rex Tillerson earned a degree in civil engineering at the University of Texas at Austin before joining Exxon Company, U.S.A. in 1975 as a production engineer.

In 1989, he became general manager of Exxon Company U.S.A.’s central production division, responsible for oil and gas production operations throughout a large portion of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kansas.

In 1992, Mr. Tillerson was named production advisor to Exxon Corporation. Three years later he was named president of Exxon Yemen Inc. and Exploration and Production Khorat Inc., and in January 1998 became vice president of Exxon Ventures (CIS) Inc. and president of Limited. In those roles, he was responsible for Exxon’s holdings in Russia and the as well as the I consortium operations offshore Sakhalin Island, Russia.

In December 1999, he became executive vice president of ExxonMobil Development Company. Mr. Tillerson was named senior vice president of Exxon Corporation in August 2001, and was elected president of the corporation and member of the board of directors on March 1, 2004. He assumed his current position as chairman and chief executive officer on January 1, 2006.
