Consequently, inter-cultural understanding, peaceful co- existence and tolerance are suffering. | 3 | Since its establishment in 2008, as one of the priority projects of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) has always played a significant role beyond only that of a conventional University. It is a network of cooper- ating education and research institutes across the 43 members of the UfM, a driver for students and staff mobility across the shores of the Mediterranean and a platform for inter-cultural dialogue and understanding. EMUNI is an enabler of all those values that require vigorous effort but bring infinite benefits. With the launch of our Centre for Arab, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies in 2015, EMUNI has been delivering its stat- ed mission even beyond the Euro-Mediterranean region. Accommodating the global transformations, where borders are porous and challenges are shared, the Centre orients itself not only towards its neighbours, but also neighbours of the neighbours. In this special supplement of the International Journal of Euro-Mediterranean Studies (IJEMS), EMUNI and its Centre for Arab, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies are proud to part- ner with the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Banipal Magazine, who made a careful selection of the pieces of contem- porary literature from the Arab States of the Gulf. The literary culture of the Gulf is rich and diverse, yet too concealed to be ap- preciated. We aim to cast light on these works and believe that collectively they will be able to gain even more prominence. The content of this supplement is different from the academic nature of the articles in the Journal’s issues. While scholarly work advances our knowledge, literature has the ability to touch the hearts and minds. The power of literary work to address everyone and at different levels is what makes this publication much more Volume 9 | 2016 | Number 2 | Supplement A Taste of Today’s Gulf Literature than a “supplement” for our usual readership. We trust that as such this publication will make its way to an even wider audience and allow a genuine inter-cultural exchange to take place. I have enjoyed discovering the literary voice of the region and I am sure our readers will find this fine selection as stimulating and engaging as much as it is entertaining. Gospodarska kriza in varčevalni ukrepi, nacionalistična gibanja po svetu in politična polarizacija, skrajne ideologije in nasilje so značilnosti hitro spreminjajočega se sveta, v katerem je vse manj prostora za razumevanje med kulturami, mirno sožitje in strpnost. Evro-sredozemska univerza (EMUNI) že vse od ustanovitve v letu 2008 kot eden prednostnih projektov Unije za Sredozemlje prevzema pomembno vlogo poleg tiste, ki jo imajo tradicionalne univerze. EMUNI je mreža izobraževalnih in raziskovalnih usta- nov 43 članic Unije za Sredozemlje, gibalo mobilnosti študentov in profesorjev z obeh strani Sredozemskega morja in prostor za medkulturni dialog in razumevanje. EMUNI spodbuja vse tiste vrednote, za katere se je treba truditi na vso moč in ki prinašajo neskončne koristi. Z ustanovitvijo Centra za arabske, islamske in bližnjevzho- dne študije v letu 2015 se poslanstvo EMUNI širi onkraj Evro- sredozemske regije. Center se zaradi sprememb v svetu, kjer ni več trdno začrtanih meja in so izzivi skupni, usmerja ne le na sosede, pač pa tudi na sosede sosedov. EMUNI in njen Center za arabske, islamske in bližnjevzhodne študije sta ponosna, da sta pri tej posebni prilogi Mednarodne revije za Evro-sredozemske študije sodelovala z Ministrstvom za zunanje zadeve Republike Slovenije in revijo Banipal, ki je opravila skrben izbor sodobne literature avtorjev iz arabskih za- livskih držav. Tamkajšnja književna kultura je bogata in raznoli- ka, a preveč skrita, da bi jo ustrezno cenili. Z izdajo te zbirke jo Volume 9 | 2016 | Number 2 | Supplement A Taste of Today’s Gulf Literature želimo približati bralcem in verjamemo, da bo s predstavljenim izborom pridobila še več zaslužene pozornosti. Vsebina tega dodatka se razlikuje od akademske narave člankov v običajnih številkah revije. Medtem ko znanstvena dela prinaša- jo znanstveni napredek, ima literatura sposobnost, da se dotakne srca in uma. Moč literarnih del, da nagovorijo vse, in to na raz- ličnih ravneh, je tisto, zaradi česar je ta publikacija veliko več kot “priloga” za naše običajne bralce. Verjamemo, da bo s tem našla pot v še širšo javnost in omogočila pristno medkulturno izmenjavo. | 5 | Odkrivanje literarnega glasu te regije mi je bilo v velik užitek in prepričan sem, da bo ta pretanjeni izbor za naše bralce hkrati privlačno in spodbudno kot prijetno branje. Abdelhamid El-Zoheiry Predsednik EMUNI Urednik IJEMS ﻣﻘﺪﻣﺔ ﯾﻮاﺟﮫ اﻟﻌﺎﻟﻢ اﻟﯿﻮم ﻋﻠﻰ ﻧﻄﺎق واﺳﻊ ﺗﺤﺪﯾﺎت ﻣﺘﻔﺎﻗﻤﺔ ﺑﺪاﯾﺔ ﻣﻦ أزﻣﺎت اﻗﺘﺼﺎدﯾﺔ وإﺟﺮاءات ﺗﻘﺸﻔﯿﺔ إﻟﻰ اﻧﺘﺸﺎر ﺣﺮﻛﺎت ﻗﻮﻣﯿﺔ ﻋﺎﻟﻤﯿﺔ واﺳﺘﻘﻄﺎب ﺳﯿﺎﺳﻲ ووﺻﻮﻻ إﻟﻰ اﻷﯾﺪﯾﻮﻟﻮﺟﯿﺎت اﻟﻤﺘﻄﺮﻓﺔ واﻟﻌﻨﻒ، ﻛﻠﮭﺎ ﺳﻤﺎت ﻋﺎﻟﻢ ﺳﺮﯾﻊ اﻟﺘﻘﻠﺐ وﻧﺘﯿﺠﺔ إﻟﻰ ذﻟﻚ ﺗﻌﺎﻧﻲ ﻛﺜﯿﺮ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﻔﺎھﯿﻢ ﻣﺜﻞ اﻟﺘﻔﺎھﻢ ﺑﯿﻦ اﻟﺜﻘﺎﻓﺎت واﻟﺘﻮاﺟﺪ اﻟﺴﻠﻤﻲ واﻟﺘﺴﺎﻣﺢ. ﻣﻦ ﻧﺸﺄﺗﮭﺎ، ﺗﻌﺪ اﻟﺠﺎﻣﻌﺔ اﻷوروﻣﺘﻮﺳﻄﯿﺔ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺸﺎرﯾﻊ ذات اﻷوﻟﻮﯾﺔ ﻟﻤﻨﻈﻤﺔ اﻻﺗﺤﺎد ﻣﻦ أﺟﻞ اﻟﻤﺘﻮﺳﻂ وﺗﻠﻌﺐ دور أھﻢ وأﺑﻌﺪ ﻣﻦ ﻛﻮﻧﮭﺎ ﻣﺠﺮد ﺟﺎﻣﻌﺔ ﺗﻘﻠﯿﺪﯾﺔ ﻓﮭﻲ ﺷﺒﻜﺔ ﻟﻠﺘﻌﺎون ﺑﯿﻦ اﻟﺠﺎﻣﻌﺎت و اﻟﮭﯿﺌﺎت اﻟﺘﻌﻠﯿﻤﯿﺔ و اﻟﺒﺤﺜﯿﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﺪول اﻟﺜﻼث و أرﺑﻌﻮن اﻷﻋﻀﺎء ﻓﻲ اﻻﺗﺤﺎد ﻣﻦ أﺟﻞ اﻟﻤﺘﻮﺳﻂ وﻣﻨﺼﺔ ﻟﻠﺤﻮار واﻟﻔﮭﻢ ﻣﺘﻌﺪد اﻟﺜﻘﺎﻓﺎت و داﻓﻊ ﻟﺘﺒﺎدل اﻟﻄﻠﺒﺔ وأﻋﻀﺎء ھﯿﺌﺔ اﻟﺘﺪرﯾﺲ ﻋﺒﺮ ﺳﻮاﺣﻞ اﻟﺒﺤﺮ اﻟﻤﺘﻮﺳﻂ. و ﻣﻨﺬ إﻓﺘﺘﺎح ﻣﺮﻛﺰ اﻟﺪراﺳﺎت اﻟﻌﺮﺑﯿﺔ واﻹﺳﻼﻣﯿﺔ واﻟﺸﺮق أوﺳﻄﯿﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﺠﺎﻣﻌﺔ ﻓﻲ ﻋﺎم ٢٠١٥، ﺗﻮاﺻﻞ اﻟﺠﺎﻣﻌﺔ اﻷوروﻣﺘﻮﺳﻄﯿﺔ ﺗﻠﺒﯿﺔ ﻣﮭﻤﺘﮭﺎ اﻟﻤﻌﻠﻨﺔ إﻟﻰ ﻣﺎ ﺑﻌﺪ اﻟﻤﻨﻄﻘﺔ اﻷروﻣﺘﻮﺳﻄﯿﺔ اﺳﺘﯿﻌﺎﺑﺎ ﻟﻠﺘﺤﻮﻻت اﻟﻌﺎﻟﻤﯿﺔ، ﺣﯿﺚ أﺻﺒﺤﺖ اﻟﺤﺪود ﻧﻔﺎذة واﻟﺘﺤﺪﯾﺎت ﻣﺸﺘﺮﻛﺔ ﻓﺈن اﻟﻤﺮﻛﺰ ﯾﻘﻮم ﺑﺨﺪﻣﺔ ﻟﯿﺲ دول اﻟﺠﻮار ﻓﺤﺴﺐ، ﺑﻞ أﯾﻀﺎ اﻟﺪول اﻟﻤﺠﺎورة ﻟﺪول اﻟﺠﻮار. ﻓﻲ ھﺬا اﻟﻤﻠﺤﻖ اﻟﺨﺎص ﻣﻦ اﻟﻤﺠﻠﺔ اﻟﺪوﻟﯿﺔ ﻟﻠﺪراﺳﺎت اﻷوروﻣﺘﻮﺳﻄﯿﺔ، ﺗﻌﺘﺰ اﻟﺠﺎﻣﻌﺔ اﻷوروﻣﺘﻮﺳﻄﯿﺔ وﻣﺮﻛﺰھﺎ ﻟﻠﺪراﺳﺎت اﻟﻌﺮﺑﯿﺔ واﻹﺳﻼﻣﯿﺔ واﻟﺸﺮق أوﺳﻄﯿﺔ ﺑﺘﻜﻮﯾﻦ ﺷﺮاﻛﺔ ﻣﻊ وزارة اﻟﺸﺆون اﻟﺨﺎرﺟﯿﺔ ﻟﺠﻤﮭﻮرﯾﺔ ﺳﻠﻮﻓﯿﻨﯿﺎ وﻣﺠﻠﺔ "ﺑﻨﯿﯿﺎل" اﻟﺘﻲ ﻟﮭﺎ اﻟﻔﻀﻞ ﻓﻲ اﻻﺧﺘﯿﺎر اﻟﻤﺘﺄﻧﻲ ﻟﺒﻌﺾ أھﻢ أﻋﻤﺎل ﻣﺆﻟﻔﻲ اﻟﺨﻠﯿﺞ اﻟﻌﺮﺑﻲ ﻣﻦ اﻷدب اﻟﻤﻌﺎﺻﺮ. ﺗﺘﻤﯿﺰ اﻟﺜﻘﺎﻓﺔ اﻟﺨﻠﯿﺠﯿﺔ اﻟﻌﺮﺑﯿﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﺜﻘﻞ واﻟﺘﻨﻮع إﻻ أﻧﮭﺎ ﻻ ﺗﺄﺧﺬ ﻣﻜﺎﻧﺘﮭﺎ اﻟﻤﺴﺘﺤﻘﺔ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺘﻘﺪﯾﺮ. أﻧﻨﺎ ﻧﺴﻌﻰ إﻟﻰ ﺗﺴﻠﯿﻂ اﻟﻀﻮء ﻋﻠﻰ ھﺬه اﻷﻋﻤﺎل وﻧﺆﻣﻦ ﺑﺄﻧﮭﺎ ﺳﻮف ﺗﻜﺘﺴﺐ أھﻤﯿﺔ أﻛﺜﺮ. ﯾﺨﺘﻠﻒ ﻣﺤﺘﻮى ھﺬا اﻟﻤﻠﺤﻖ ﻋﻦ اﻟﻄﺒﯿﻌﺔ اﻷﻛﺎدﯾﻤﯿﺔ اﻟﺘﻲ ﺗﺘﻤﯿﺰ ﺑﮭﺎ اﻟﻤﻘﺎﻻت اﻟﻤﻨﺸﻮرة ﻓﻲ أﻋﺪاد اﻟﻤﺠﻠﺔ. ﻓﺒﯿﻨﻤﺎ ﺗﺴﻌﻰ اﻷﻋﻤﺎل اﻟﻌﻠﻤﯿﺔ إﻟﻰ اﻟﺘﻘﺪم واﻟﻮﺻﻮل إﻟﻰ اﻟﻤﻌﺮﻓﺔ، ﻓﺄن اﻷدب ﯾﺴﺘﻄﯿﻊ اﻟﺘﺄﺛﯿﺮﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻘﻠﻮب واﻟﻌﻘﻮل. أن ﻗﻮة اﻷﻋﻤﺎل اﻷدﺑﯿﺔ ﻓﻲ ﻣﺨﺎطﺒﺔ اﻟﺠﻤﯿﻊ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻛﻞ اﻟﻤﺴﺘﻮﯾﺎت اﻟﻤﺨﺘﻠﻔﺔ ھﻲ ﻣﺎ ﺗﺠﻌﻞ ھﺬا اﻟﻤﻨﺸﻮر أﻛﺜﺮ ﻣﻦ ﻣﺠﺮد ﻣﻠﺤﻖ ﻟﻘﺮاﺋﻨﺎ اﻟﺘﻘﻠﺪﯾﯿﻦ. ﻧﺤﻦ ﻋﻠﻰ أﺗﻢ ﺛﻘﺔ ﻣﻦ وﺻﻮل ھﺬا اﻟﻤﻨﺸﻮر إﻟﻰ ﻗﺎﻋﺪة ﺟﻤﮭﻮر أوﺳﻊ ﻣﺤﻘﻘﺎ ﺗﺒﺎدل ﺣﻘﯿﻘﻲ ﻣﺘﻌﺪد اﻟﺜﻘﺎﻓﺎت. أود أن أﻋﺒﺮ ﻋﻦ ﺳﻌﺎدﺗﻲ اﻟﺒﺎﻟﻐﺔ ﻻﻛﺘﺸﺎف ھﺬا اﻟﺼﻮت اﻷدﺑﻲ اﻟﺒﻠﯿﻎ ﻟﻤﻨﻄﻘﺔ اﻟﺨﻠﯿﺞ اﻟﻌﺮﺑﻲ وﺛﻘﺘﻲ ﺑﺄن ھﺬه اﻟﻤﺨﺘﺎرات اﻟﺮاﺋﻌﺔ ﺳﻮف ﺗﺤﻈﻰ ﺑﺈھﺘﻤﺎم و إﻋﺠﺎب اﻟﻘﺮاء. ﻋﺒﺪ اﻟﺤﻤﯿﺪ اﻟﺰھﯿﺮي رﺋﯿﺲ اﻟﺠﺎﻣﻌﺔ اﻷوروﻣﺘﻮﺳﻄﯿﺔ رﺋﯿﺲ ﺗﺤﺮﯾﺮ اﻟﻤﺠﻠﺔ اﻟﺪوﻟﯿﺔ ﻟﻠﺪراﺳﺎت اﻷوروﻣﺘﻮﺳﻄﯿﺔ Volume 9 | 2016 | Number 2 | Supplement A Taste of Today’s Gulf Literature Slovenia is proud to be part of the Euro-Mediterranean region, and its historical and cultural heritage, which shaped our socie- ty. It is therefore of special importance for us that the seat of the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI), one of the first and key initiatives of the Union for the Mediterranean, is located on our coast. In the light of the unprecedented phenomena that are disturbing our societies across the region – unemployment, radicalisation, conflict and migration – EMUNI’s mission to em- | 6 | power the young is more relevant than ever.

News of his death quickly appeared on the front pages of all major newspapers in the Middle East. BBC World broadcast a substantial television news item and obituary on the weekend of his death, as did other major European television networks. Extensive international television coverage was provided by Al Jazeera on its many different language channels, as well as on social network sites such as YouTube. Le Monde carried a substantial obituary and eulogy by Pierre Assouline on the day of Darwish’s death, on its ‘la république des livres’ blog. A lengthy obituary was quickly published in The New York Times (Monday 11 August), whose pages had often carried reports on the poet’s activities and publications since 1978. The Guardian (Monday 11 August) published a detailed tribute by Peter Clark, the distinguished Arabist and editor; others to print substantial and timely accounts included Haaretz in Israel, and in the U.S.A. the Los Angeles Times and The Boston Globe among others (all on 10 August); The Australian, The Independent, and the Seattle Times published tributes on 11 August, as did The Times (14 August), and the Economist (21 August). The internet was flooded with emotional tributes, of which the South African activist Breyten Breytenbach’s in Pambazuka News was typical (‘Mahmoud is gone. The exile is over.’) .

    Arab American Literature and the Ethnic American Landscape: Language, Identity, and Community A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department English and Comparative Literature of the College of Arts and Sciences by Niven Herro, B.A., M.A. July 2018 Committee Chair: Jennifer Glaser, Ph.D. Committee Members: Lisa Hogeland, Ph.D., Laura Micciche, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation explores the works of contemporary Arab American women writers with a focus on language, identity, and community. I am especially interested in the ways in which the Arab American immigrant experience mirrors that of other ethnic American groups, as demonstrated in their literatures. First, I argue that Randa Jarrar’s debut novel, A Map of Home (2008), which uses language—both Arabic and English—as a source of empowerment, reflects Chicana writer Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of the “new mestiza consciousness.” Comparing the Chinatown community in Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone (1993), to the Muslim community in Mohja Kahf’s The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf (2006), reveals the complicated relationships the novels’ characters have with their communities. In both novels, the personal development of their young women protagonists is greatly influenced by their respective communities, which simultaneously serve as positive sites of support and complex sites of difficult negotiations. While the characters in A Map of Home and The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf ultimately learn to effectively navigate their hybrid subject positions as both Arabs and Americans, the failure to do so leads to a tragic end for the couple at the center of Laila Halaby’s Once in a Promised Land.

  • Transnational Connections and the Arab Gulf
    Transnational Connections and the Arab Gulf This volume presents a study of transnational cultural flows in the Gulf region and beyond. It combines an understanding of the region’s historical connections with the outside world and an assessment of contemporary consequences of these connections. In the context of current theoretical debates, empirical case studies are presented to demonstrate that the Gulf is not only an exporter of oil and capital, but also of culture and religion. As these travel to distant locations, they are transformed in ways not intended by those who initiated the process – at the same time, the Gulf remains an importer of labour, the latest technology, economic skills and ideas, whose roots are no longer possible to locate. Transnational Connections and the Arab Gulf challenges both the definition of globalisation and transnationalism as one way processes generated mainly by the Western World and the view that transnationalism is solely a twentieth century phenomenon. The authors collected here analyse and map historical and contemporary manifestations of transnational networks within this region, linking them to wider debates on society, identity and political culture. This volume will interest students and researchers of politics, the Middle East, anthropology and transnationalism.
