Michener's experiences as a textbook editor at Macmillan Publishers and in the U.S. Navy during World War II are part of the discourse. The exchange elaborates on how Michener began to write fiction, focuses on his great success as a writer, and notes that he and his wife donated over $100 million to educational institutions over the years.     President Abd al Fatah al-Sisi and the stability of Egypt and the region Shaul Shay November 2016 Two years since Abdel Fattah al- Sisi toppled former President Mohamed Morsi in 2013, there are two main dangers that threaten the stability of the Egyptian regime: economy and security. Egypt, a state of 90 million people has deteriorating economic and living conditions. Al-Sisi’s regime is challenged by serious economic problems that threaten the stability of the regime. The most prominent problems include the lack of foreign currencies, the devaluation of the Egyptian pound value against the US dollar, the increase of prices on the majority of the basic goods, high unemployment and bureaucracy and corruption. Although the Egyptian security forces produced an atmosphere of security and stability, the war against the radical Islamic groups and the Muslim Brotherhood is far from being over. Cairo’s prosecutor general said in a statement on November 20, 2016, that the country’s President Abd al Fatah al-Sisi had faced two previous assassination attempts: one in Saudi Arabia and the second in Egypt. The assassination attempt on Sisi was part of a larger plan to overthrow the current regime that would also involve the assassination of former interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim over the 2013 dispersal of Cairo sit- ins supporting ousted president Mohamed Morsi, according to the prosecution.1 This is the first time that Egypt officially acknowledged assassination attempts against Sisi. Egypt will try 292 militant suspects over plots to assassinate President Sisi and attacks in the Sinai Peninsula. The suspects were also responsible for carrying out a number of high-profile attacks in North and South Sinai, including the bombing of a tourist bus in the resort town of Taba in February 2014 that killed two South Koreans and an Egyptian driver.

Staging Peace: Televised Ceremonies of Reconciliation Abstract The visit of Egypt's President Anwar Sadat to Jerusalem was the model for Dayan and Katz's conceptualization of the genre of media events, as live programs which have the power to transform history. Fifteen years later, a series of televised reconciliation ceremonies, which marked the stages of the peace process between Israel and its Arab neighbors (the Palestinians and the Jordanians), are used to re-examine the model. We demonstrate (1) how the effectiveness of these ceremonies depends on the type of contract among the three participants-leaders, broadcasters and public-each of whom displays different kinds of reservations, and (2) how the aura of the ceremonies draws on the prior status of the participants (Hussein), but also confers status (Arafat). Through the experiences of the protagonists in Ahlam Mosteghanemi‟s novel Memory in the Flesh and Yamina Bachir-Chouikh‟s film Rachida, the article examines the body as a site and record of trauma and exile, where loss is experienced at both national and individual levels. Through the damaged bodies of men and women, these works demonstrate the disintegrating effects of the Algerian civil war. Keywords: Algerian women, trauma, civil war, body as canvas 1. Introduction Sociopolitical trauma has been a part of Algerian history as a French colony from 1830 to 1962, and as an independent nation from 1962 until the present. The War of Independence was followed by a relatively peaceful period, which ended when changes in governmental authority and widespread corruption brought about a civil war. Riots started in 1988 due to dissatisfaction with the ruling party, the National Liberation Front (FLN). During the Dark Years from 1991 to 2002, Algeria was thrown into turbulence by fundamentalism and terrorism.

INTRODUCTION The image in figure 1 is a screenshot of the hacking of the website of the Leba- nese Ministry of Energy and Water responsible for the country’s electricity in April 2012 by a group called Raise Your Voice, a self- proclaimed offshoot of the global hackers collective Anonymous.1 Protesting poor living conditions and in- adequate social services, the hackers not only crashed the government agency’s site but also substituted one text for another. Reenacting an electric cut, they transformed the cursor into a flashlight that needs to be moved around in order to light up an otherwise dark screen. This act of hacking defaces the ministry website through a textual and technological performance that involves viewers as active participants who need to move the cursor in order to reveal the text. Bourdieu’s framework is used to examine the relationship between the field of cultural production and its social agents. The thesis includes investigation in two areas: first, the role of social agents in structuring and restructuring the field of translation, taking Mahfouz’s works as a case study; their role in the production and reception of translations and their practices in the field; and second, the way the field, with its political and socio-cultural factors, has influenced translators’ behaviour and structured their practices.
