Camel Tails Glossary Arabic Spelling : Arabic spelling is strictly phonetic in the English language, as there is no direct correlation of the Arabic alphabet to the English version. Thus you will find such things/places spelled as Mekka, Mecca, Jeddah, Jidda, Jiddah, Mohammad, Muhammad, Osama bin Laden, Usama bin Laden, etc. All are essentially correct, and usually dependent on the source (or physical location) of the information. Earlier spellings (for instance from “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom ” by Lawrence) will have the same locations spelled quite differently, but readily recognizable. Arabic Names : These can get tricky. The last name of an Arabic individual is usually indicative of his tribal origin. For instance: Abdul Aziz al Saud (using the short form), would indicate that his given name is Abdul Aziz of the family of Sa’ud (or more correctly, the tribe of Sa’ud). Essentially, “al ” means “of, ” such that he would be Abdul Aziz of the Sa’ud Tribe. We had one Navy Commander whose name was Ammar al Katani. This means (in its simplest form), Ammar of the Katani Tribe. We initially called him Commander Katani, but were quickly corrected to calling him Commander Ammar (who, if you wish to get specific) comes from the Katani Tribe. Calling Commander Ammar, Commander Katani would equate to calling an American Indian of the Apache Tribe who happened to hold the rank of Captain in the Tribal Police say, Captain Apache! This mistake in Arabic is closely equated to the same faux pas. Occasionally you will see the designation “abu ” in an Arabic name, and this usually means “father of ” or “grandfather of ”. -

Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam in Qatar Rehenuma Asmi Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy under the executive committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Rehenuma Asmi All rights reserved ABSTRACT Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam Rehenuma Asmi My study explores language ideologies in the capital city of Doha, Qatar, where school reform movements are placing greater emphasis on English language acquisition. Through ethnography and a revised theory of language ideologies, I argue that as languages come in greater contact in multi-lingual spaces, mediation must occur between the new and old relationships that are emerging as a result of population growth, policy changes and cross-cultural interactions. I interrogate the development concept of the “knowledge economy” as it is used to justify old and new language ideologies regarding Arabic and English. As Qataris change their education systems in response to the economic development framework of the “knowledge economy,” they are promoting language ideologies that designate English as useful for the economy and “global” citizenship and Qatari Arabic and Standard Arabic as useful for religious and cultural reasons. I argue that Standard English, through its association with the “knowledge economy,” becomes “de-localized” and branded an “international” language. This ideology presents English as a modern language free of the society in which it is embedded, to circulate around the globe. In contrast, Standard Arabic is represented as stiff, archaic language of religious traditions and Qatari Arabic is presented as the language of oral culture and ethnonationalism. -

Moghadam Abstract In this paper I examine the way modalities of mobility and settlement contribute to the socio- economic stratification of the Iranian community in Dubai, while simultaneously reflecting its segmented nature, complex internal dynamics, and relationship to the environment in which it is formed. I will analyze Iranian migrants’ representations and their cultural initiatives to help elucidate the socio-economic hierarchies that result from differentiated access to distinct social spaces as well as the agency that migrants have over these hierarchies. In doing so, I examine how social categories constructed in the contexts of departure and arrival contribute to shaping migratory trajectories. -

Turkish literature (Turkish: Türk edebiyatı or Türk yazını) comprises both oral compositions and written texts in the Turkish language, either in its Ottoman form or in less exclusively literary forms, such as that spoken in the Republic of Turkey today. The Ottoman Turkish language, which forms the basis of much of the written corpus, was influenced by Persian and Arabic and used the Ottoman Turkish alphabet. The history of the broader Turkic literature spans a period of nearly 1,300 years. The oldest extant records of written Turkic are the Orhon inscriptions, found in the Orhon River valley in central Mongolia and dating to the 7th century. Subsequent to this period, between the 9th and 11th centuries, there arose among the nomadic Turkic peoples of Central Asia a tradition of oral epics, such as the Book of Dede Korkut of the Oghuz Turks—the linguistic and cultural ancestors of the modern Turkish people—and the Manas epic of the Kyrgyz people. Beginning with the victory of the Seljuks at the Battle of Manzikert in the late 11th century, the Oghuz Turks began to settle in Anatolia, and in addition to the earlier oral traditions there arose a written literary tradition issuing largely—in terms of themes, genres, and styles— from Arabic and Persian literature. -

Consumerism is an extremely controversial subject in Saudi society. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes that the opportunities and constraints of consumerism have brought about in the specific socio-economic and cultural settings between local traditions, religion, familial networks and institutions, on the one hand, and the global flow of money, goods, services and information, on the other. A qualitative method was applied. -

This dissertation examines processes of lexical borrowing in the Sorani standard of the Kurdish language, spoken in Iraq, Iran, and the Kurdish diaspora. Borrowing, a form of language contact, occurs on all levels of language structure. In the pre-standard literary Kurdish (Kirmanci and Sorani) which emerged in the pre-modern period, borrowing from Arabic and Persian was a means of developing a distinct literary and linguistic tradition. By contrast, in standard Sorani and Kirmanci, borrowing from the state languages, Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, is treated as a form of domination, a threat to the language, character, culture, and national distinctness of the Kurdish nation. The response to borrowing is purification through coinage, internal borrowing, and other means of extending the lexical resources of the language. As a subordinate language, Sorani is subjected to varying degrees of linguistic repression, and this has not allowed it to develop freely. Since Sorani speakers have been educated only in Persian (Iran), or predominantly in Arabic, European loans in Sorani are generally indirect borrowings from Persian and Arabic (Iraq). These loans constitute a major source for lexical modernisation. The study provides wordlists of European loanwords used by Hêmin and other codifiers of Sorani. -

two Transnational Merchant Families in the Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Gulf James Onley The Gulf has long been a transnational space, although the nature of that transnationalism has changed over the years. Before oil, the Gulf shaikhdoms looked towards Persia and the Indian Ocean; since the 1950s, their orientation has shifted towards the Arab world and the West. Gulf merchant families were and are one of the most transnational groups in the Gulf. More than any other group, they have connected eastern Arabia to the wider world for hundreds, possibly thousands, of years. They lived and still live dual lives, speaking two or more languages and keeping homes in two or more countries. This chapter examines the culture, activities and transnational connections of two Gulf Arab merchant families over the course of 228 years: the Safar family of Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Oman, Yemen, India and Britain; and the Kanoo family of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Britain and America. Transnational Merchant Families The Safar Family, 1778–1900 The Safars1 were prosperous general merchants in the nineteenth century, importing, exporting and shipping goods of every description – from rice to rifles – throughout the Gulf region and beyond.2 They also engaged in agency work, representing Messrs Lynch Brothers (a shipping company) and Fracis Times and Co. (an arms dealer). The family maintained an extensive business network, with merchant houses in Bushehr (Bushire), Manamah, Muscat, Mocha, Hudaydah and Bombay, and possibly in Hillah and Basrah. These merchant houses operated as a loose conglomerate – sometimes engaged in joint ventures with each other, sometimes operating on their own. -
