My journey to seek out knowledge and be educated started on the tiny Island of the Kingdom of Bahrain when I was five and a half years old in the late sixties. Today, five decades later, I am ending my journey as a student and a scholar on the other side of planet earth from home, in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona. I have had some major stops on my journey that include four countries and three 5 continents. I attended the Teacher’s Training Institute in Muscat, Oman in 1979, and some years later, Moray House College, University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland. I also attended the University of Bristol in Bristol, England in the late eighties and the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in the nineties. My love to all. 6 DEDICATION I dedicate this research to Sultan Qaboos bin Said, the Sultan of wisdom and peace who has dedicated his life to making Oman a modern country, and to spreading peace and tolerance around the globe.     Camel Tails Glossary Arabic Spelling : Arabic spelling is strictly phonetic in the English language, as there is no direct correlation of the Arabic alphabet to the English version. Thus you will find such things/places spelled as Mekka, Mecca, Jeddah, Jidda, Jiddah, Mohammad, Muhammad, Osama bin Laden, Usama bin Laden, etc. All are essentially correct, and usually dependent on the source (or physical location) of the information. Earlier spellings (for instance from “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom ” by Lawrence) will have the same locations spelled quite differently, but readily recognizable. Arabic Names : These can get tricky. The last name of an Arabic individual is usually indicative of his tribal origin. For instance: Abdul Aziz al Saud (using the short form), would indicate that his given name is Abdul Aziz of the family of Sa’ud (or more correctly, the tribe of Sa’ud). Essentially, “al ” means “of, ” such that he would be Abdul Aziz of the Sa’ud Tribe. We had one Navy Commander whose name was Ammar al Katani. This means (in its simplest form), Ammar of the Katani Tribe. We initially called him Commander Katani, but were quickly corrected to calling him Commander Ammar (who, if you wish to get specific) comes from the Katani Tribe. Calling Commander Ammar, Commander Katani would equate to calling an American Indian of the Apache Tribe who happened to hold the rank of Captain in the Tribal Police say, Captain Apache! This mistake in Arabic is closely equated to the same faux pas. Occasionally you will see the designation “abu ” in an Arabic name, and this usually means “father of ” or “grandfather of ”.

    Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam in Qatar Rehenuma Asmi Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy under the executive committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Rehenuma Asmi All rights reserved ABSTRACT Language in the Mirror: Language Ideologies, Schooling and Islam Rehenuma Asmi My study explores language ideologies in the capital city of Doha, Qatar, where school reform movements are placing greater emphasis on English language acquisition. Through ethnography and a revised theory of language ideologies, I argue that as languages come in greater contact in multi-lingual spaces, mediation must occur between the new and old relationships that are emerging as a result of population growth, policy changes and cross-cultural interactions. I interrogate the development concept of the “knowledge economy” as it is used to justify old and new language ideologies regarding Arabic and English. As Qataris change their education systems in response to the economic development framework of the “knowledge economy,” they are promoting language ideologies that designate English as useful for the economy and “global” citizenship and Qatari Arabic and Standard Arabic as useful for religious and cultural reasons. I argue that Standard English, through its association with the “knowledge economy,” becomes “de-localized” and branded an “international” language. This ideology presents English as a modern language free of the society in which it is embedded, to circulate around the globe. In contrast, Standard Arabic is represented as stiff, archaic language of religious traditions and Qatari Arabic is presented as the language of oral culture and ethnonationalism.

  • Transnational Connections and the Arab Gulf
    Transnational Connections and the Arab Gulf This volume presents a study of transnational cultural flows in the Gulf region and beyond. It combines an understanding of the region’s historical connections with the outside world and an assessment of contemporary consequences of these connections. In the context of current theoretical debates, empirical case studies are presented to demonstrate that the Gulf is not only an exporter of oil and capital, but also of culture and religion. As these travel to distant locations, they are transformed in ways not intended by those who initiated the process – at the same time, the Gulf remains an importer of labour, the latest technology, economic skills and ideas, whose roots are no longer possible to locate. Transnational Connections and the Arab Gulf challenges both the definition of globalisation and transnationalism as one way processes generated mainly by the Western World and the view that transnationalism is solely a twentieth century phenomenon. The authors collected here analyse and map historical and contemporary manifestations of transnational networks within this region, linking them to wider debates on society, identity and political culture. TABLER, EDITOR N RECENT STATEMENTS, both the U.S.-backed and Kurdish-based Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkish-backed Euphrates Shield have stated their intention to take the Islamic State (IS) capital, IRaqqa, raising questions about what entity will replace the jihadist group in eastern Syria. Whatever the outcome, tribes in and around Raqqa will be central not only to defeating IS but also to ensuring it doesn’t return. Indeed, the sentiments of Arab tribesmen are hardly uniform, and are affected by clan and other internal rivalries, making them hard to predict. But these groups constitute the traditional political and social structure in eastern Syria, and their opinions on IS and other outside players will be pivotal in shaping a more stable order in the area.     Helpful Tips when traveling to Bahrain Needless to say, many Arab customs are very different from those in the west, and you should be aware of what you’re expected to do and not to do. Although Arabs are understanding and unlikely to take offence at social blunders, provided they arise from ignorance rather than malice, you will be made far more welcome if you acquaint yourself with local ways of doing things. It’s important to remember that you’re a foreigner and you must therefore adapt to the customs and social behavior of the region – not the other way around. In addition to actions and behavior which are regarded as criminal, there are certain unwritten rules that you must observe in order not to offend local sensibilities. Dress There are two distinct types of women’s clothing in the region: one for locals, the other for expatriates. Outside the home, most Arab women dress according to religious custom, which means that they must cover most of the body, from head to foot. The traditional black overgarment (abaya) is ankle length with long sleeves and a high neckline, and the hair is covered. Some Arab women are totally covered, including their face and hands, especially Saudis and those with strictly religious husbands. This is meant to protect women protection from unwanted attention, and in Saudi Arabia even foreign women must wear an abaya outside the home; the religious police will stop any woman who has her head uncovered and direct her to cover her hair immediately. In other UAE states, foreign women may wear western clothes but should always dress conservatively.

    FOUO Cultural Intelligence for Military Operations: Kuwait Kuwaiti Arabs in Kuwait Summary of Key Points • Kuwaiti Arabs comprise 45 percent (approximately 950,000) of the population in Kuwait. “Arab” is a name originally given to the nomadic inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula. It is now largely a cultural/linguistic designation, embracing various national, regional, and religious groups in several different countries. • Kuwaiti Arabs tend to be dark-haired with brown eyes, and olive or dark skin. However, no single set of racial or physical characteristics defines Kuwaiti Arabs. Due to centuries of migration and contact with other groups, Kuwaitis can exhibit Persian, Turkish, Indian, African, and South Asian features. • Kuwaiti Arabs are predominantly Muslim. They are divided between Sunni (approximately 70 percent) and Shia (approximately 30 percent). The Sunni-Shia division has caused fewer problems in Kuwait than in neighboring states. The majority of people live in Kuwait City, which has grown from a small sea-town into a modern, cosmopolitan city. There are smaller communities inland and to the south along the Gulf coast. • Kuwaiti Arabs trace their lineage to the Bani Utub tribe, which settled Kuwait in 1716. The journey to Kuwait established a strong sense of community and gave Kuwaitis the origins of a national identity. • Although Kuwaiti identity remains influenced by their nomadic heritage, Kuwaitis have been essentially settled for nearly 300 years. A center for maritime and desert trade, Kuwait was linked to the Arabian Peninsula, the Gulf, and India.

    FOUO Cultural Intelligence for Military Operations: Saudi Arabia Cultural Field Guide Country: Saudi Arabia has a population of 22.8 million people. Saudi Arabs make up 80-85 percent of the population; foreign workers make up the remainder. Foreign workers include primarily non-Saudi Arabs (2 million) and South Asians (2.4 million). Saudi Arabia includes five regions: Nejd, al-Hassa (Eastern Province), the northern region near the borders with Jordan and Iraq, the Hijaz and Asir on the Red Sea coast, and the Rub al-Khali desert (the Empty Quarter). Although the House of Saud and the House of Wahhab attempted to consolidate Arab tribes on the Arabian Peninsula in the 18th Century, the modern Saudi identity only emerged in 1932, when Ibn Saud created the modern state of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is based on a puritanical version of Islam, known as Wahhabism. Once a poor area with a nomadic economy, Saudi Arabia has experienced rapid development since the discovery of vast oil reserves in the 1930s. The economic prosperity that came from the oil wealth has posed large challenges to the religiously and culturally conservative country and has required the importation of large amounts of foreign labor. These groups of foreign laborers are kept separate from the Saudis. Religion Divisions: Saudi Arabia is Muslim country. The Saudi population is divided between Sunni (95 percent) and Shia (5 percent). Most Sunni Saudi Arabs are followers of the Wahhabi interpretation of Hanbali Sunni Islam, which is the state religion. Non-Saudi Arabs are mostly Sunni Muslims. South Asian workers are Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Christian.
