Their narrators do not simply read minds and tell stories; they also become wrapped-up in the ethical implications of telling stories that require the reading of minds. In effect, they ask: what happens when narrators become godlike? Does the privilege of omniscience define—or disrupt—the novel’s ethical value? I argue that the phrase “God only knows” [Bog znaet] becomes the constant refrain of realist narrative, a performance of authority in the moment of divesting from it. In a series of close readings—from Turgenev’s early Sketches of a Hunter to his novel Fathers and Sons, from Dostoevsky’s first work Poor Folk to his late story “The Meek One,” and from Tolstoy’s earliest semi-autobiographical narrative experiments to the trilogy of novels Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth—I argue that the newly omniscient Russian narrator draws attention to the consequences of his gaze, highlighting the existence of a boundary in the moment he makes a display of crossing it, making sacrosanct the interior of the other in the process of laying it bare. These narratives of Turgenev, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy become deeply concerned with the troubling effects of their increasingly privileged intrusion into the minds of others and, in making us ever aware of the ethical consequences of reading the face to access the mind, cast a spotlight back onto our reading of them. Recent works of literary criticism—from rhetorical humanists championing the value of literature to deconstructive examinations of the ethics of reading—investigate the intersection of narrative and ethics in the novel. This dissertation brings Russian narratives of the mid nineteenth-century into this conversation, which has not yet been done by Slavic scholars. Building on recent theories of narrative ethics and omniscience, this dissertation argues that an awareness of the transgressive nature of privileged knowledge becomes clearly manifest in realist prose, even when hidden feelings and unspoken thoughts are rendered legible. These works reckon with—and invite us to attend to—the troubling effects of their increasingly privileged intrusion into the minds of others. Бог знает What happens when narrators become godlike? Does narrative omniscience, with its penetrating gaze and access to the privileged knowledge of character interiors, define—or disrupt—the novel’s ethical value? The narratives of Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Lev Tolstoy are intensely concerned with these problems. Their narrators do not simply read minds and tell stories; they also become wrappeD-up in the ethical implications of telling stories that require the reading of minds at all. But how is an awareness of the ethical problem of knowing someone too well—of “getting” their story and fixing them in words—possibly made manifest in the tradition of Russian realist novelistic narrative, where even consciousness, unspoken feelings, and private thoughts are rendered knowable? It would seem that nineteenth-century novelistic narrative’s greatest trick—accessing interiority and, in Dorrit Cohn’s terms, making the minds of other people transparent, such that we know the characters of novels better than we could ever know each other—also engenders its most significant ethical consequences.2 In the epigraph above, the narrator of Turgenev’s Fathers and Sons [Отцы и дети, 1862] defaults before God’s knowledge of his characters, begging not only ignorance, but also the very impossibility of such privileged knowledge at all. Although the narrator has just checked in on all the novel’s other main characters, peering into their bedrooms and detailing their mental states with ease, here he insteaD notes the visible illegibility of Pavel Petrovich’s thoughts: while “God only knows” their content, their direction is clearly to be seen in the expression of his face. This narrative voice, despite paying lip-service to the impenetrable sanctity of the character’s mind, in the same breath still breaks this boundary, narrating Pavel Petrovich’s thoughts by reading his face, unquestionably certain in the knowledge of which expressions correspond to which interior states. Turgenev’s narrator here attests to the unknowability of the character’s mind in the same sentence that makes it self-evident. 1 Translation aDapteD from RicharD Hare’s (1948). 2 Cohn asserts that this contraDiction lies at the heart of fictionality: the “most real” literary characters are “those we know most intimately, precisely in ways we could never know people in real life,” while the verisimilitude at the center of literary fiction relies on the communication and representation of the incommunicable anD unrepresentable. Dorrit Cohn, Transparent Minds: Narrative Modes for Presenting Consciousness in Fiction (Princeton: Princeton UP, 1978), 5-7. 2 This moment, I argue, lays out the antinomies central to the development of narrative omniscience in the mid-nineteenth-century Russian novel. Just as the character’s thoughts are at once legible and illegible, his mind made inviolable in the moment it is also violateD, so too is narrative authority defined by an anxious flitting between two opposites. The narrator divests his gaze of any penetrative insight (“God only knows where his thoughts wandered”) in the same sentence that he relies on it (“but they did not wander only into the past”). The narrative is aware of these contradictions, and draws attention to them. I argue that “God only knows”3 indexes the way Russian narratives of the mid nineteenth-century grapple with the consequences of their nascent omniscience. With the constant refrain of “God only knows”—the bellwether of a larger process of disavowing privilege in the moment of relying on it—Turgenev’s, Dostoevsky’s, and Tolstoy’s narrative voices make visible the work of their omniscience, as well as make known their anxiety over its effects.

With his mother and uncle Aleksey travelled to Europe in 1827, touring Italy and visiting Goethe in Weimar. Goethe would always remain one of Tolstoy's favourite poets, and in 1867 he made notable translations of Der Gott und die Bajadere and Die Braut von Korinth . In 1834, Aleksey was enrolled at the Moscow Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where his tasks included the cataloguing of historical documents. Three years later he was posted to the Russian Embassy at the Diet of the German Confederation in Frankfurt am Main. In 1840, he returned to Russia and worked for some years at the Imperial Chancery in Saint Petersburg. During the 1840s Tolstoy wrote several lyric poems, but they were not published until many years later, and he contented himself with reading them to his friends and acquaintances from the world of Saint Petersburg high society. Office: 328 Pugh Hall Vasily Vereshchagin, "Return from the Petrov Palace," 1895 Course Description From the battlefield to the ballroom, Tolstoy's epic novel of life in Russia at the beginning of the nineteenth century is a profound meditation on the causes of war, the nature of social relationships, the poles of human suffering and love, and, perhaps most importantly, the nature and meaning of history itself. In this course we will read War and Peace closely in its entirety. We will examine the origins of the novel in Tolstoy's early writing and consider the historical, political, and social contexts, both of the events described (the Napoleonic Wars) and the period fifty years later in which Tolstoy wrote War and Peace. We will address some of the following questions: Is War and Peace a novel? How does Tolstoy's obsession with the theme of history shape the text on a variety of levels? What do various adaptations of the novel tell us about its reception at different historical moments? Finally, how might War and Peace be relevant to our own moment in history? General Education Objectives This course will provide students with an opportunity to explore the interrelationship between literature, art, and national identity.     BOOK REVIEWS: Michael R. Katz, ed. Tolstoy's Short Fiction. New York: W.W. Norton & co., 1991. 503 pp. Like Homer, Tolstoy is homo duorum librorum. But if the hazards of transmission prevented even the Roman world from knowing more of Homer's creation, except by wistful hypothesis, Tolstoy's legacy beyond the two epics is bounteous and diverse, disengaged from the shadow of the major works while yet offering, as Homer's lost Margites apparently did, a commentary on them. outside the novels, Tolstoy's stories comprise the amplest and the most influencial body of fiction he produced. Like his admired predecessor, Tolstoy gave us a long work about society in the moment of finding its heroes, and a comparable study of society disconnected from heroism and the means of achieving it. The stories, in contrast, tend to deemphasize the dialectic between polis and person. Characters more often observe themselves than others, and the intense moments of bearing witness from which characters in the novels profit--Levin seeing his brother die, Pierre watching the downfall of his wife--are presented to the reader undigested by a second textual consciousness which the narrator esteems. This lack of a significant internal audience to action creates a fiction very different from War and Peace and Anna Karenina. The connection which Tolstoy believed art must demonstrate between people is demonstrated between reader and text. Michael Katz's Norton critical Edition brings together much of Tolstoy's best short fiction: "Sevastopol" (December, May), "Three Deaths," "Family Happiness," "God Sees the Truth, But Waits," "The Death of Ivan Ilych," "The Three Hermits," "The Kreutzer Sonata," "Master and Man," and "Alyosha the Pot." It will teach us to become more appreciative, perceptive, and understanding readers, and to communicate our experience of literary texts in a compelling way. In the process, we will touch upon questions of Russian history and culture, literary and intellectual tradition, philosophy and ethics and religion. How do we account for the extraordinary, unprecedented outburst of creativity in 19th century Russia? Why do we read these books more than a hundred years after they were written, and what skills do we need to have as readers if we are to understand and enjoy artworks that were created in a different language and in a different time? How do these works engage philosophy and social thought, and how do these aspects relate to their literary form? Why do we read fiction—which is a polite word for things that are not true, or at least not true in the usual sense—and what can fiction do that other kinds of writing cannot? These questions are just for starters. There will be many more questions, and you will pose most of them yourselves. For some of these questions you will develop good working answers. In other cases you will only open the door onto knotty knotty knots of complex issues. But by the end of the semester you will have read and understood the major prose works of what is called the “Golden Age of Russian Literature,” and you will have a firm foundation in the historical context and literary concepts necessary to understand works like them.

Lee: Fathers and Sons Fathers and Sons by Jessica Lee (History 2225) he novel Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev showed the differing ideals between the old generation and the young generation and the paths they each felt Russia should be taking. TTurgenev showed through his characters that one does not nor should, as was also the case with Russia as a country, negate the past, thinking that would build a better future. He then showed another option; a happy marriage of the two ideals, where melding of the old Russia and the ideas of a new Russia produced a better and beneficial result. In fact, those characters in the book who represented opposite and far ends of the spectrum did not end with happy lives. In 1861 Alexander II moved forward with the first of many reforms by emancipating the serfs. This huge reform affected eighty-five percent of the population or about fifty-two million people.1 There were groups within Russia that were not happy about these changes, “they insisted on long-established values and fought bitterly to preserve privilege and autocratic rule.”2 The nobles and the Russian Orthodox Church made up the largest group that did not support the emancipation of the serfs.

The article deals with the creative work of I. S. Turgenev, which is one of the prominent representatives of Russian critical realism of the second half of the 19th century. Turgenev´s books are very popular as the birthplace of writer and abroad. The writer has seen heavy side of human existence, so he could not ignore the social antithesis, individual and collective tragedy and disaster. His knowledge of real life has given rise to a direct criticism of society, but conciliatory melancholy position. The main ethical principle of acceptance of reality for Turgenev was the need of harmony and beauty in the world and the people; the desire to understand and be understood by all. Turgenev, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy occupy in their own land not only the place of Dickens, Thackeray, and George Eliot in England, but also to some degree that of Carlyle, Matthew Arnold, or Ruskin. Their works are regarded as not merely diverting tales over which to spend pleasantly an idle hour, but as books full of suggestive and inspiring teaching on moral and social questions. “Fathers and Children” and “Crime and Punishment” are discussed and read not merely for their artistic merit, as reflections of Russian life, but as trenchant criticisms of that life.
