Congratulations to our premierships teams - The 16A’s & 16B’s in our junior ranks and the B3 & C1 teams in our senior grade. Our 10B’s who were undefeated throughout the season and stumbled in the final but I am sure that they will learn from this experience. Our B1/2 also made the final series and whilst not winning on the day, the club is very proud of their efforts. There were many fine individual & team performances throughout this year, and I congratulate all award winners and look forward to sharing these achievements at our upcoming presentation night. The game of cricket this year has received an enormous boost in popularity with Australia and New Zealand hosting the 50 over world cup series. The standard was unbelievable with both bat & ball with many records achieved before the host nations competed in the final with Australia proving to be the superior team. Cricket this year was rocked by the passing of international cricketer Phil Hughes, who was struck in the head whilst playing in a shield match against NSW. Hughes death triggered an outpouring of emotion rarely witnessed in sport and the cricket community rallied their support, by placing cricket bats outside homes, a minute silence at games or highlighting the number 63* that Hughes finished on. Richie Benaud was an icon of our game having been the Australian Captain, legend leg spinner and doyen cricket commentator who will be also be sadly missed. His knowledge of the game and wiliness to share his experiences or donate his time to charity was testament to the man who was respected both locally & overseas. Summer without the voice of Richie will be like summer without cicadas. Volunteers are important to any well run club and I would like to acknowledge the hard work of our committee and thank the coaches, managers and scorers for their support. If you are yet to enjoy this rewarding role, I encourage you to come along and be involved with our club as a participating volunteer. I am sure your child, along with others will show their appreciation. Unfortunately for the third year in a row the annual Bradman Oval fixture for our under 16 players was washed out due to inclement weather. Hopefully in the years ahead we can maintain this association and provide an opportunity to play on a first class ground with history. An area that our club could improve is obtaining sponsorship from local businesses to assist in keeping playing costs down. Our Bunnings BBQ at Kirrawee was again a profitable exercise with all teams supporting, however other social & player activities were deferred this year to assist with minimising costs which was unfortunate. Personally I would like to thank the club Secretary, Neil Croker for his efforts and also taking on the treasurer’s role at short notice. His dedication and support throughout my association with this great club has been invaluable. I have decided not to stand for re-election this year. It will provide an opportunity for new faces & some fresh ideas to steer the club into the future. My association with the Dragons has provided an opportunity to form many long term friendships, which will continue, and want to personally thank Russ Waddell for his guidance, Harry Robbins for his tireless work with players and coaches, Ian Latham who never stops improving the club & its records, Dennis Pendergast for his coaching & story-telling, Peter Ward who continues to be a great committee person & Bob Price, Bill Knowles and Anthony Marciante for their guidance and tireless work behind the scenes. Thank you. I’ll look forward to catching up with everyone at the end of season events. Steven Jones ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 6 ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 7 ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 7 ENGADINE DRAGON CRICKET CLUB Page 8 SECRETARIES REPORT The Dragons enjoyed another successful season with 3 Junior Teams and 3 Senior Teams making the final with our 16A, 16B1, B3 & C1 teams winning their respective grades. Whilst our 10B & B1 teams were not successful on the day they did the club proud. The club fielded 22 teams across the Junior and Senior competitions with 300 players playing for the club. Our U8 numbers were down this year and a strong focus on recruitment will be required for next season. Congratulations to Steve Jones on becoming the club’s 30th Life Member. Steve has led the club for the past nine years as President and his guidance and support will be missed next season. The passing of Phil Hughes whilst playing the game we all enjoy rocked the cricket community and I was extremely proud to see the way our teams honoured Phil with a minutes silence at the game following his death. The support of our Sponsors is appreciated and allows the club to keep our fees to a minimum. Our club can only function with the dedication and support of our Committee, Captains, Coaches, Managers, Scorers and helpers – thank you for playing some part in getting all 22 teams on the field this year. The 2015/16 season will be my last as Secretary and the club will need new faces on the Committee so please come along to the AGM on Wednesday 10th June.
