AROUND THE GROUNDS – ROUND NO.3

Round No.3 for our junior teams didn’t reach the dizzy heights of the previous round with only 5 wins from the 12 matches, although the results they achieved were good enough for the Club to retain top spot in the SSJCA “Club Championship”. The outstanding performance this round came from Hamish Jacka (14C) who scored 150 , which included a match winning partnership of 93 with Jye Savania. Other highlights for the round were by ‘Intermediate Player of the Round’ Cameron Westlake (16A) 63, ‘Junior Player of the Round’ Riley Ganderton (12C) 54 not out, Josh Sheehy (14A) 50, Aidan Wood ((12D) 3 for 6, Laythen Carlisle (14C) 3 for 12 and Mitchell Betts (16A) 3 for 25.

Our three modified teams all had close results with the 10C side the only winner thanks to some great batting from Tyson Burke 29 and fantastic bowling from Kyle Blakeney 2 for 9. Our 10E and U8 Blue team went down by only a handful of runs with Ryan Lillis (U8) the standout with 27 and 2 for 23.

Another great round for our senior sides with only two losses, some massive team scores posted and five centuries hit. The B3 team piled on 3 declared for 403 with Plus Fitness Engadine ‘Senior Player of the Round’ Matt Berry 176 and Brayden Heffernan 141 combining for a club record partnership of 342 for this grade. Doug Ritchie scored his second consecutive century with 169 with John Westlake chipping in with 100 that saw their B4 side score 365. Not to be outdone Josh Berry contributed 140 runs to his C1 teams 7 for 394. Although our batsmen dominated the best performances we had four bowlers that captured 4 apiece – Clinton Allen (B2-2) 4 for 14, Rithik Sahay (C1) 4 for 16, Mathew Barnes (B2-1) 4 for 18 and Adam Pascoe (B1-2) 4 for 67. At this early stage of the season all seven sides look in the running for some silverware, but there is a still a lot of cricket to be played.

Congratulations to Tim Berry, Matt Berry and Josh Kedwell on their selection in the SSCA Telegraph Shield Team. Tim is vice captain.

10C TEAM

Another resounding victory for the 10C squad this round. In a game where the weather was a big factor and made for very different conditions from first week to the next our team never wavered from the goal to keep our undefeated start to the season intact. Ultimately we outscored Miranda 110 to 60 even with the "Duckworth Lewis" method being used in week 2 to make up time after we arrived to find the pitch flooded.

The bowling figures were very impressive from this team with all players contributing strongly with nice line and length. Importantly very few sundries were conceded and regular wicket taking prevented any of their batsmen scoring beyond 10.

Kyle was first to be thrown the new cherry by coach Dean and didn't disappoint, grabbing wickets in 2 of his 3 overs to finish up with tight figures of 2 for 9 off 3. Tom's first over was a cracker knocking over their strike batter with his last delivery then only allowing a single in his 2nd. 1 for 2 off 2 overs plus some outstanding glove work behind the stumps. Jack was 3rd in the line up and sent down 3 lightning overs, unlucky not to get a wicket. Liam continued the theme of the match and proved very difficult to score from. He sent the bails flying and score book shows 1 for 7 off 3 overs. Will M also grabbed a wicket in his first over and had plenty of dots in his spell of 1/12 off 3. Corey recorded a maiden in his first over then backed this up superbly with a wicket in his 2nd and very few runs overall; 1 for 4 off 3. Tyson showed genuine pace and had their batsmen ducking and weaving. We're still not sure how he didn't snare a wicket or three but 0/3 off 2 overs is fantastic bowling nevertheless. Connor showed plenty of skill in the field as well as with the ball where he sent down 3 overs for 7 runs. Noah had plenty of dots in his 2 over spell which only went for 4 runs. Likewise Will P didn't wish to let the team down and bowled straight and true for only 4 runs against. Maeve was brilliant behind the stumps and fiercely accurate with ball in hand and her 3 overs had an astonishing 15 dot balls and obviously included a maiden. Jake only got 1 over this match but put it to good use promptly dismissing one of the better Miranda batters. 1 for 5.

If the bowling was brilliant then we'll need another superlative to describe the batting this round. We piled on a massive score and after week 1 were approximately double the score of our opponent.

Maeve and Will P got proceedings underway in an impressive fashion partnering for 19. Most of Maeve's runs (12) were accumulated with shots to the boundary. Will (7 runs) chimed in with plenty of singles. Connor and Noah were next pair in and continued the strong form on the lightning outfield of week 1. Both batsmen played some glorious strokes that crashed into the boundary fence. 16 to Connor and 20 to Noah. The middle order pairing of Tyson and Jack crushed any hope that Miranda may have had for a win. Tyson was ruthless belting five 4's including a devastating over that included 3 in a row. He finished with our top score of 31. Jack fed the strike to his partner beautifully and helped out with 4 valuable runs. Corey and Tom were our first pair on soggy week 2 and batted stoically in tough conditions and like all of last 3 pairs only had time for 4 overs. Fantastic to see neither batsmen getting out. They combined for 10; 8 to Tom. Kyle and Jake defended superbly against the swinging ball to knock up 7 combined sharing the spoils; 3 to Jake and 4 to Kyle. Our tail end pairing of Will M and Liam put the result well beyond doubt. Will remained not out for 7 and Liam got 3.

For a terrific all round performance and some great team spirit we congratulated Will Marcic with the player of the match trophy.

10E TEAM

Another great effort from the boys this game, although we did not get the points they improved from the previous game. Great bowling efforts this week from Oscar hitting middle stump, Ethan had his best performance of the season with some straight bowling, Riley was always making the batsman play giving himself every opportunity to take a wicket, Cooper is improving each and every week getting closer and closer to the stumps.

Our batting is getting better and we had some outstanding partnerships this week with Mitch and Rory getting us off to a good start with some excellent running between the wickets, Zach and Alex then followed that up with some good running and a couple of boundaries to both of them, Mitch Duric also batted well with some good running between the wickets and he also backed up well in the field, Brodie and Ollie had an outstanding partnership with a number of boundaries and always putting the opposition team under pressure with the running between the wickets.

Special mention to Ollie for taking the first catch of the year.

Well done boys

12A TEAM

What a great start to the season- three wins from three matches! This round we took on Como Jannali. After winning the toss the captains decoded to bat first. Highlights of the innings were Lachlan R and Koby L’s 55 run partnership. Kobey F’s powerful hitting to boundary, Charlies confidant batting and Lachlan M’s getting the runs ticking over late in innings. Unfortunately we didn’t get to bat the 50 overs, with only 10 players we were all bowled out for 168 runs, a solid total to defend.

Weeks 2 the teams were met with a wet and cold day at the Ridge. 2 early wickets to Thomas and Lachlan R had the dragons in a strong position. A missed run out opportunity could have proved costly as the Como batsman went on to score a 50. Even though no more wickets fell, the run rate was kept slow with many dot balls and superb fielding, a special mention to Beau who pounced on every ball not letting anything get past him. Charlie showed big improvement in his bowling from last game. Once again the team had too many sundries with 17 wides and 7 no balls for the innings. Let’s try to improve on this next game as we are up against the completion leaders Seagulls.

12C TEAM

Engadine 2 - 139 Lost to Miranda 182. Riley 54no, luke21 went well with the bat and Jacob 2/8, Cooper 2/21 bowled well.

14A TEAM

Engadine batted first and our top order batsmen continued getting the team off with patience batting and looking for runs with the loose ball. Great batting by our opening batsmen Hayden 18, Josh 50 well done, Luke 16, Corey M 19, Brayden a well deserved 10 and ‘Mr. Stand and Deliver’ Tyler 30 off 20 had his team mates and the parents enjoy seeing him on fire with boundaries and a 6 which pushed the score at the end of 50 overs to 170.

The second week had us all thinking we were back watching a winter sport with parents rugged up and also getting the pitch dry after heavy rain and very cold conditions, but that didn't stop the boys who wanted to defend their score.

It was amazing bowling in winter conditions with good line and length by our opening bowlers James who picked up 2 wickets and Corey M 1 , Luke 1 ( LBW), Jessie wicket maiden, and Tyler 1 and bowling 5 maidens in a spell had Bangor on the back foot and slowed their run rate down. Well done also to Corey A for picking up a wicket with his spin bowling on the day in those conditions.

Also sharp fielding by Brayden, Lachlan M, Ollie & Matt assisted our bowlers in those wet conditions, kept Bangor to 113 off 50 gave Engadine a great win. Keep up that positive attitude with your cricket boys and looking out and supporting each other no matter how the game is played in those winter conditions well done.

Cheers Scott 14B TEAM

Already at Round 3 and the season appears to be flying. Both coaches were off partying at a Wedding on the Central Coast first week and the boys received a bit of a wakeup call. Putting yourself in a position to win requires runs on the board and this week it didn’t happen. Jake topped scored this game with a much improved 16 runs and once again fell to some fielding brilliance.

The hard work at training is slowly showing on match day with some good catches being taken and overall the fielding is improving game by game. Kyan opened up with the ball picking up two wickets. Beau bowled well picking up two valuable wickets and was assisted by Tyler and Lachlan picking up one wicket.

Although not the result we were after it was a little bit of a wakeup call showing to the boys that this comp isn’t easy and the wins need to be well fought. I am more than confident they will bounce back this week with a win.

Keep the hard work up boys.

14C TEAM

Three wins from three matches! Another solid win by the 14C’s.

After winning the toss, as in the previous two matches, we bowled first on a warm smoky morning, with hazard reduction burning occurring nearby.

After having Bangor 1/11, we weren’t able to capitalise on the early wicket, the next wicket falling at 88. The batsmen took advantage of our short bowling, with a number of boundaries square of the wicket and loose fielding allowed for the extra runs; the extras were also adding up, again! When the bowling was pitched up, the wickets fell. Kyle took the vital wicket of their opener and Hamish the other batsman, who was also looking solid. After 25 overs Bangor were 4/100.

We really allowed Bangor to accumulate way too many runs as a result of sloppy fielding, bowling too short and giving away too many extras; and didn’t the coach let the boy’s know at the innings break, in a ‘nice’ but firm manner!

Hamish and Nathan Allen opened the batting. Nathan received a short delivery that tucked him up, resulting in a caught and bowled. Austin was looking solid in his defence and a good anchor for Hamish before his dismissal. Jake was in next and was in real good touch, hitting 3 boundaries in his score of 16, before being unluckily run out after a direct hit. Next was Taj who gave further good support, showing good footwork, a straight bat, and looking comfortable at the crease.

Despite the loss of three wickets, Hamish was playing his natural game, hitting 8 boundaries in his first 50 runs. At stumps on Week 1, we were 3/105; 5 runs ahead of Bangor.

Week 2, after a night of heavy rain, the ground was in surprisingly great shape, and so play resumed under darkened, grey clouds, the ever present threat of rain grey and a real chill in the air; a complete opposite of the week before. Hamish and Taj resumed the batting; both batsmen looking comfortable at the crease. Our lead was steadily building until Taj was bowled for well complied 14. A short cameo hard hitting knock by Callum before being unluckily run out off a no-ball for four.

At this stage, we were 5/148 off 36 overs; with a lead of 48. Still more runs were needed to give Bangor a reasonable total to chase.

Hamish continued to bat aggressively, with shots and running between wickets; hitting any loose or short ball to the boundary, with his runs accumulating at a steady rate, giving us a defendable total. Jay was batting sensibly, hitting the occasional much needed boundary and also looking at every opportunity for a single to turn the strike over to Hamish. After a mighty 93 run partnership, after 25 overs we finished with 5/241, with Hamish 150 and Jay 18 both not out. Great batting Jay!

A special to Hamish for a patient, well crafted, thought out and hard hitting magnificent innings. Following on from his 125 and 96, Hamish’s talent and hard work at training, is really paying off.

Bangor resumed their innings at 4/100. A great spell from Laythen, quickly capturing two wickets, had Bangor 6/111. Keeping up the training Laythen, you’re getting better with every match and you thrive on hard work. Further wickets to Nathan Allen and Austin, quickly slowing down the run chase and assuring us of a win.

We couldn’t quite get the final wicket and after 50 overs, Bangor finished with 9/173.

Bowling highlights included Laythen’s magnificent 9 overs 3/12; Taj 8 overs 1/14; Kyle 5 overs 1/17; Austin 3 overs 1/14; Nathan Allen 4 overs 1/5. Hamish also bowled 5 overs 2/6 and two catches as wicket keeper. The final result was a win by 68 runs. Although a convincing victory, further work needs to be done on our fielding and bowling.

The next match is against our shared competition leaders Gymea Bay, so we need to be on our game for this one.

Continue to enjoy the wins boys, support and encourage each other and remember cricket is a team sport and everyone needs to make an effort, whether batting, bowling or fielding. A shout out to Adam, who is still recovering from a broken collarbone after suffering the injury playing footy of all things, during the cricket season! We’re missing you ‘out there’ Adam.

Fantastic effort 14C’s, let’s keep it going!

Well done to the boys for their first win for the season in round 3 against a Miranda. Once again we had only 10 players so it was a good effort.

Best with the bat were Cameron 63, Josh 39 and Ryan 14 for our total of 151.

With the Ball a great bowling and fielding performance, Mitchell Betts with 3wkts, Will Whitehouse with 2wkts, Will Craggs 2wkts and Dane Coombs. There was also a great direct hit thrown by Will Whitehouse that put us in a winning position in a tightly contested game.

Well done.

First time down at Oyster Bay for a lot of the boys with many still feeling the effects of Hydeys wedding the night before. For the first time this season the toss was lost and we were sent into bowl. The old work horse Ad’s was flogged with 18 overs returning the impressive figures of 4/68 which is around 3.7 an over on a small oval, great effort Ad’s. The bowling depth was tested with a few of the boys out, Alex picked up two wickets whilst Lakey, Stew, Sammy and Turk picked up a wicket each. A total of 202 was not unreachable with the line up we possess.

The run chase struck a hurdle when Moreland and Turkey fell cheaply however they weren’t going to be around second week and we can only assume it was a selfless act to get quick runs. Lakey made a valuable 39 runs supported well by Jono making 16.

We fell well short however all is not lost, the season continues and we will chase that next win again.

Batting first we got off to a great start at 0/96 with Joff 38 and Dean 64. David McMillan chipped in with 40, but we fell apart after that ending up on 202. We had them 4/60 over the break with Wade Horsnell taking 3 and Troy with 1.

Second week started with wet conditions and tough bowling conditions. They started well, but Anthony got the breakthrough we needed. Wade with a brilliant run out. Clinton came on and took 4 wickets and we wrapped it up all out for 130 odd.

Great effort guys
