PRESIDENT REPORT

I write this 2019-20 President’s report with a sense of both relief and trepidation. Relief in the fact our playing season narrowly avoided the current Covid-19 crisis we now find ourselves in and trepidation of what the future holds for our game and the possible changes to it that may result.

The season itself was a strong one for our club with 13 junior teams, 4 senior teams plus 9 boys and girls participating in the Saturday morning T20 Blast at Kareela. As a club we are most proud that we still have good participation in this area of the Sutherland Shire through the hard work of our committee and volunteers. Dropping in to a few of the games over the season I was most pleased to see the enjoyment the game of cricket brings to our young players.

I do note that there has been an alarming decline in the number of seniors playing in the SSCA competition since 2009/10, maybe even before that. A high percentage of people are unable to commit to the current formats as they did in the past. I hope this resonates with the decision makers in the men’s association and that radical change is implemented to increase participation.

On the field we had a very successful season with 7 teams contesting Finals. B2, 14A, 14B, 12A and 10E teams winning their respective competitions and the 16A and 12B-1 teams finishing as runners up. Well done to all.

Once again we had strong representation in the various representative teams. 33 in the Sutherland junior representative teams and 13 current and ex Dragon’s played in the Sydney grade competition as well as 7 in the metropolitan cup. A special mention to Andrew Ritchie who made his first grade debut for Sutherland during the season. Also of note were ex Dragons players Nic Amos (Sutherland first grade), Ben Dwarshuis (Sutherland first grade and Sydney Sixers) and Brad Simpson (Australian U19’s).

A club cannot function without its volunteers. Thank you to our secretary Neil Croker who contributes an unbelievable amount of time for the club. Also thank you to Brad Moreland, Col Berry, Adam Pascoe, Doug & Michelle Ritchie, Denise Martin, Kristyn Dundas, Tim Russel, Chris Moreland, Ian Latham and the many others that contributed throughout this season.

Thank you also to all the parents who put their hands up to coach, manage, grade, select and help out with their respective teams. The game does not function without your input.

A special thanks to our many sponsors. Your support provides so much for our club. Thank you to our 4 Gold Sponsors GENERATION LEGAL, PLUS FITNESS ENGADINE, CLUB ENGADINE & ENGADINE BOWLING CLUB. As the vast majority of our sponsors are local business please do your best to support them especially during this difficult time.

We have just received the good news that our application for a NSW government local sports grant has been successful for the refurbishment of our Anzac practice nets. This upgrade to our facilities will provide greater training opportunities for all of our players.

Well done to those players finishing their junior careers. Good luck with those moving on to senior cricket whether that is playing local men’s cricket, Shires or Grade Cricket. I’m sure you will have fond memories of your time in juniors with the Dragons.

In closing let me once again thank everyone for their contributions to another successful season.

All the club news and events are available via our website engadinedragonscc.org.au and Facebook page.

The Club looks forward to seeing you again next season.

SECRETARY REPORT

The 2019/20 season will go down as one of the most interesting seasons in the Clubs History with games being cancelled due to the smoke haze that covered Sydney in December, torrential rain in February and then just as we concluded our season COVID19 struck resulting in our Presentations being cancelled.

On the field we had another successful season with our 14A, 14B, 12A and 10E’s all winning their respective grades – the most premiership wins this season by any club in the SSJCA. Commiserations to our 16A and 12B1 teams who lost their finals however put in a tremendous effort throughout the season. Our B2 Team won a very tight final against the competition favourites.

We entered our first full Master Blaster Team and a joint U12 Girls team with Bosco in the SSJCA inaugural U12 Girls competition.

On the 6th September, just prior to the start of the season the club received the devastating news that Harry Robins had passed away. For those people that did not know Harry, the club would not be what it is today without his efforts over 50 years, below are his list of achievements,

Service to the Engadine Dragons Cricket Club – Secretary for 7 seasons. (1973/74, 74/75, 76/77, 77/78, 81/82, 82/83, 83/84) Treasurer for 1 season. (1966/67) Property Officer for 14 seasons. (1964/65 to 1977/78) Wrote articles for the local newspaper for 32 seasons commencing 1964/65. Newsletter Editor for the first 5 seasons of publication commencing 1964/65. Coaching junior teams for 23 seasons. (11 Premierships and 6 Runners Up) Club coach for 5 seasons. (2001 to 2006) Ran School Holiday coaching clinics for 7 seasons. (2004/05 to 2010/11) Club delegate to the SSJCA for 8 seasons. (1973 to 1979) & (1981 to 1984) Club delegate to the SSCA for 9 seasons. (1967 to 1976)

Service to the SSCA & SSJCA Associations & Sutherland Grade Club – SSCA Auditor for 17 seasons SSCA General Committee for 3 seasons. SSJCA Grading Committee SSJCA for 5 seasons. SSJCA Representative Selector for 6 seasons. Coached Watson for 3 seasons. Coached Green Shield teams for 1 season (Undefeated Premiers).

Honours received – • Life Membership of the Sutherland Shire Cricket Association in 1970. • Life Membership of the Engadine Dragons Rugby League Football Club in 1975. • Life Membership of the Engadine Dragons Cricket Club in 1978. • Senior Club Champion Trophy named after Harry in 1996. • Hughes Community Award in 1998. • Australian Sports Medal in 2000. • Cricket 50 Year Service Award in 2005. • Club training facilities & Meeting Rooms named “The Harry Robbins Rooms” in 2006. • Service to Shire Junior Cricket Award in 2016.

SECRETARY REPORT

After coaching countless premiership teams over the years the 2006/07 10A Premiership victory at the age 76 years showed Harry had lost none of his ability to guide teams at the highest level. In 2008 Harry hung up his coaching boots, but still continued to help out teams where ever he could and was still actively contributing to the Club by writing his “Around the Grounds” column in the Club Newsletter and in the local paper. Ill health in the 2014 saw Harry’s 65 years of active contribution to cricket in the Sutherland Shire come to an end.

We received two grants this season, one from to purchase new Shade Tents and the second from the NSW Government Office of Sport to upgrade our nets. A special thank you to Lee Evans MP for Heathcote for supporting our application – these works will hopefully be completed prior to the start of the season.

Congratulation to Andrew Ritchie who made his First Grade Debut with Sutherland on the 14th March and became player number 277. Andrew started his junior cricket with the Dragons in the U8’s in 2008/09.

I hope to see everyone when the new season starts.

TREASURER REPORT

Congratulations to all those who had a successful year.

During the year the club made an operating Profit of $5,436.83 compared to last season loss of $4,875.03 an increase of $10,311.86 over last year. The overall balances are very healthy at $53,631.31.

Highlights include: Cash balances of $53.631.31 up $5,436.83 on last season. Income was $39,282.01 down from $47,239.25 Registration Fees down $4,428.36 from $34,381.00 to $29,952.64 due to a decline in numbers. Sponsorships for the year were down $4,500 to $4,150 from $8,650. Primarily due to increased focus in 18/19 to find sponsors to fund our 60th Anniversary shirts. A grant from Australian Cricket was received for the purchase of Shade Tents of $2,390 in 2019/20. These were purchased in 18/19. Uniform purchases were down $1,650 to $2,025 from $3,630, likely due to lower registration numbers and continuation of online registrations. Our Expenses were $33,845.18 down $18,269.10 compared to last season. Uniforms down $10,440.74 to $2,524.50 from $12,965.24 mainly due to purchase of 60th Anniversary shirts in 18/19. Our fees paid to the associations were down $1,615.45 compared to last year mainly the result of lower player numbers. Cost of Balls were higher by $1,798.08 than last year due to Juniors moving to more one day games rather than the traditional 2-day games. Umpiring costs were down by $2,135 compared to last season mainly due to a lower number of Senior teams and outstanding payment of Junior umpiring fees. Our Rent and clubroom costs were down $1,356.46 compared to last year due to additional payment carried over in 2018/19. Other Sundries costs were lower than last year by $2,299.11 due to the purchase of Shade Tents in 2018/19, grant received in 2019/20.

Finally, thanks to all those who contributed in some way to making this a great club, whether its sponsors/ advertisers, committee, coaches/managers, players or parents. Everyone plays some part towards the success of the club.

CLUB RECORDS-SENIORS 1967/68 Onwards

In the season of 1991/92 the junior competition rules were changed as follows: from time limit to an over limit game, with restrictions on individual bowlers, the number of competition rounds were set at ten. In the younger age groups Introductory and Modified rules were introduced. In 2018/19 junior competition rules were changed by Cricket Australia as follows: the U10 & U12 competitions changed from two day matches to one day matches, the length of the pitch shortened, number of fielders reduced and compulsory retirement at a set number of balls faced by the batsman. In U14 & U16 competitions matches were limited to one innings per team. Because of these alteration the following EDCC junior club batting, bowling and wicket keeping records have been separated into three eras: 1959/60 to 1990/91, 1991/92 to 2017/18 and 2018/19 onwards. The senior batting, bowling and wicket keeping records remain unchanged from 1967/68 onwards. All archived club records can be viewed in full on our Club website: engadinedragonscc.org.au BATTING-200 runs or more. BOWLING-20 wickets or more. (Below records excludes Semi-Finals & Finals)

U8 MASTER BLASTERS In the third season of Master Blasters competition in the Shire, it was terrific for our Engadine Dragons club to field a full team again and not have to 'merge' with others. Symbolic of the growth and success of the women's game, we welcomed two girls to the team in Season 2019-20 in what was a summer full of fun, learn- ing and teamwork each Saturday morning at Kareela Oval.

Alexis: It was brilliant to see Alexis's confidence grow throughout the season. She truly found her voice when running between wickets, bowling accurately and backing up in the field.

Cai: A rocket arm, it is foolish to take a single in the infield if Cai has picked up the ball. Just as quick is his bowling and he put together some fiery spells this sea- son in games when his team really needed him.

Cruz: Super keen, Cruz would bat all day if he could. With a terrific eye and ever-improving bowling accuracy, Cruz has a big future ahead of him in this game.

Finn: Always putting his body on the line to stem the opposition's run rate, Finn took some classic catches this season but the development of his stock leg break saw him bowl some unplayable deliveries.

Isaac: Always looking for a direct hit run out when in the field, Isaac displayed important concentration whenever it was our team's turn to bowl. This focus was matched when he batted too and he was always a very good judge of a single.

Kyah: Tall, fiercely determined and possessing a quiet will to be better in each game, Kyah has achieved natural bounce when she bowls and this would often trouble the opposition batters. Her running between wickets and calling for safe runs got better with each innings too.

Myles: Possessing a very safe pair of hands and a willingness to never let the ball go to the boundary, Myles is a dynamic fielder and big-hitting batsman too. He took great delight in clearing the pickets.

Micah: Big hits, straight over the bowler's head were certainly a stand out of Micah's season. Just as impressive was his growth as a bowler too with increasing accuracy and bounce developing nicely by season's end.

Sam: The other half of our two-pronged spin attack, Sam looks every bit the cricketer whether it be his textbook stance or the fizz he generates from ripping a magical leggie.

A huge thank you to Cass and all of the other parents for your assistance either when umpiring, sideline cheer squad, organisation, Zooper Dooper distribution and/or scoring.

With Finn heading over to the Under 10's format next season, I'd like to congratulate the club and the association for their support of the Master Blasters competition since its inception three summers ago. It is a tremendous introduction to the game and I hope to see many more Dragons come through the ranks via this version of the game.

COACH: Kirk Grinham

10A TEAM

The 2019/20 season will be one that as a coach you remember for many years to come. It started off with a team thrown together last minute due to lack of numbers. This team consisted of two 10A’s from the 2018/19 premiers’ team, two 2018/19 B grade, two 2018/19 D grade players and one player who had never played a game of cricket before. It would have been a huge understatement to say that the season was going to be a success from game one.

However, the boys worked ridiculously hard on their skill sets more than any other team I have ever coached before. Credit must go to the parents who became bowling machines and bowling targets for the season.

We could not have achieved the eventual success without the camaraderie developed over the season.

After round 5 we had yet to record a win leaving us sitting last on the table. It would have been easy for the boys to throw in the towel, however the sheer determination to improve their skills, develop belief and trust in each other’s ability ensured that after Christmas we were going to be the team to beat. After the Christmas break, we rocketed up the table dominating teams and coming ever so close to defeating Cronulla. These boys fought like their lives depended on it, listening to every instruction and implementing them into each game.

Unfortunately, throughout the season we had several injuries that prevented us from truly achieving our full potential. Often playing with only 6 players, these boys were determined to take on the extra responsibility and fiercely competed in every game.

No longer did we bowl at the stumps every ball; we bowled outside off stump and strangled the batsmen on the offside. We improved our fielding to ensure we took our catches and runout chances. When batting we protected our wicket, identified the weak bowlers and ran singles to the weaker fielders. The boys made enormous improvements over the season and to finish in 4th place and play in the semi-final was nothing short of an amazing achievement. Firstly, congratulations to the 3 boys who were selected in the U/10s SSJCA Development Squad for 2019/20

Josh Lindsay Kai Laws Jake Simpson

Individual Statistics in the U/10s don’t always tell the true story due to the nature of the junior rules, however I feel that it is relevant to provide an insight into each player and their best performances of the season.

Harry Danne: Harry is the pinnacle of white line fever; he plays with is heart on his sleeve and always gives 110%. Determined and when focused he is destructive with the bat, rapid with the ball and magical in the field. When Haz is on the field you well and truly know he is there. The most vocal and encouraging of all. I love the passion when calling runs between the wicket. During one of the games at Heathcote Oval Haz called Yes so loud that a player in the U/14s on the opposing oval was run out thinking there was a sneaky single available. Haz’s highest score of 34no displayed his true potential with the bat. Smashing boundaries back past the bowler and running between the wickets like his life depended on it. Haz to the challenge of bowling express pace and leg spin achieving best figures of 3-13 off 4 overs. Also taking 10 catches and 6 run outs. A solid season from a Cricket fanatic.

Page - 48 - Engadine Dragons Cricket Club

10A TEAM

Sam Hewitt: This was Sam’s first season of cricket and although early stages of the season were tough, he most certainly made huge improvements to his all-round skill set. Sam mastered the ability of guiding the ball down to third man and consistently scored between 10+ runs without losing many wickets. His bowling although not fast was very difficult to score from often going for less than 10 runs off his allocated overs. Sam’s greatest assets was his team first mentality, always encouraging others and giving 110% during every game. Also, the fact that he would yell howzat every time the batsmen missed it and the keeper caught the ball of his bowling. A great first season showing enormous potential with a highest score of 12 and best bowling figures of 1-6 off 3 overs. I look forward to watching his progress over the coming season.

Bowen Hood: Bowen had a mixed season due to injuries. When he was available, he did not disappoint both with the bat and the ball. His batting can be explosive with the ability to score quickly and hit the ball out of the park. His highest score of 34 was an absolute masterclass smashing 4s to all parts of the ground. This innings showed the value of playing straight, watching the ball and taking advantage of poor deliveries. Bowen can bowl with good pace, bounce and huge inswing and although he only took 13 wickets if LBW was allowed it would have been 30+. Bowens best figures with the ball where 2-6 off 4 overs showing how difficult it is to play the swinging ball. Bowen is a player to watch in the future. If he can stay injury free and play all games there is no doubt, he will dominate the 20/21 seasons.

Kai Laws: Kai had an excellent 1st year of A grade cricket. He is a determined and dedicated player who lives and breathes cricket. He was one of the youngest and smallest players in the competition, however he always took the challenge on no matter the situation. Kai is fiercely competitive and very harsh on himself, however he always plays for the team and is the first to congratulate others on their achievements. Kai was consistent with his batting regularly scoring between 15-20 runs per game with a highest score of 26. His bowling and fielding are his greatest assets, he bowls with good pace and accuracy taking 23 wickets with best figures of 4-7 off 4 overs, also taking 10 catches and 12 direct hit runouts. An outstanding season and we look forward to seeing what he can produce in the 10As in season 20/21.

Josh Lindsay: Josh was another of our players who was struck down with injuries throughout the season, however it did not stop him from producing some classy performances throughout the season. His batting technique is exceptional and when he focuses on the ball, he strikes the ball cleaner than anyone else in the competition. Josh’s highest score of 27 produced 3 classy straight drives past the bowler for 4 and a genuine sweep shot off the spinner. Josh is an exceptional left arm swing bowler who bamboozled teams with accuracy and the ability to swing the ball late. He took a season best of 5-23 claiming the only 5 wicket haul of the season. As umpire you get a first-class view of what Josh can produce and that spell was nothing short of magnificent. A very consistent season and a bright future ahead.

Brodie Routh: Brodie is a coach’s dream!!! Dedicated to the team, focused during games, exceptional trainer and plays to win. Brodie was our teams’ man of all tricks. He started the season as the opening batsmen and medium bowler and end the season as an off-spin bowler that took the role of completing the innings. Extremely important in U/10 Cricket!!! Brodie never shy’s away from difficult situations and loves to take the game on. His highest score of 20 against Cronulla was the perfect innings. A mix of boundaries with quick singles and whilst not losing his wicket. Brodie’s off spin bowling developed nicely throughout the season. Although only 6 wickets he was very hard to score off regularly taking 1 wicket for less than 10 runs of his overs. A solid season and a pleasure to coach

10A TEAM

Jake Simpson: Jake is the smiling assassin and our Mr Consistent. He is a wholehearted competitor who produced 15 -20 runs every game. Although his highest score was only 21 it most certainly shows how consistent he was with his average per game. A key player within the middle order, always looking to steal quick singles for his teammates and was extremely hard to dismiss. His bowling improved dramatically throughout the season, while at times he pushed off the boundary like a plan taking off. His best bowling figures of 2-9 off 4 overs was outstanding. Not to mention both wickets coming from 2 genuine full-length diving classic catches off his own bowling. Jake was always keen to get behind the stumps always putting his body on the line (Literally saved 10 boundaries with his head). A very pleasing season from Mr Consistent.

Finally, a huge thank you must go to the parents who truly made the season feel special for the boys. I know how much time cricket takes out of your weekly routine but the as a coach your efforts do not go unnoticed. To all the fathers who took their sons down for extra sessions throughout the season to ensure everyone was developing their skills. To the mums who ensured the boy and other kids had snacks and drinks. Not to mention the consistent encouragement from the sidelines. These 1% extras are the exact reasons that cricket becomes a way of life for the boys. The reason as to why they love and live for the game. Again, I thank each one of you for your support throughout the season you are all absolute legends and we as a team could not have achieved the level of success without your 100% commitment week in week out.

Paul Simpson (Mr Manager): Paul is an enthusiastic Manager where some of his OCD played out whilst creating timetables, scoring schedules and weekly snack rosters for the team. Its mangers like Paul who complete all the groundwork allowing the coach to worry about the players and the game plan. His ability to take the stress out of every situation and keep the team moral high was a key aspect to our 2nd half of the season success. For this I am truly grateful Paul

Terry Danne (Digital Master): Terry the Master of My Cricket, No issue to big, no problem to small. Who said males cannot do more than one thing at a time? Terry most certainly debunked that theory. Hitting catches, throw downs, putting up the team tent, live scoring and directing traffic on and off the field. Thanks for your efforts mate

Thanks for an outstanding season Tim Laws

Firstly, what a great bunch of boys! well-mannered and polite they are a credit to their parents.

These boys made my first year as coach very enjoyable and it was an absolute pleasure to coach them and I hope that it was as memorable for them as it was for me.

I trust that I have instilled it in their minds of why we love and play this game and doing so that they are just as passionate of this club as I am and play in the Engadine way and in the right spirit for years to come.

I really got a lot of satisfaction watching them enjoy their cricket out in the middle and progress game by game as a team.

It was an impressive achievement to finish 2nd and then to defeat the minor premiers in the grand final was the cherry on top of the cake especially that it was the first year of club cricket for these boys.

Thanks to our Manager Ash who always had my back throughout the year, a special thanks to all my assistance coaches and parents who made my job worthwhile and stress-free!

Connor Paine: Our Little Lefty! Connor is an all-round cricketer, with a lot of skill, a talented left-hand batsmen with a beautiful technique with a large array of shots, a handy right arm medium paced bowler who was very hard to put away, Connor is also a crafty fieldsman, a kid who always played the game in the right spirit, Connor is a player that everyone would want in their team.

Noah Galas: This kid is a genuine all-round cricketer, his numbers back this up with the ball or the bat or in the field, Noah has proved this throughout the course of the season time and time again, Noah is a right hand batsman with a very high average due his ability with bat in hand to score runs all-round the park in the air or along the ground, he is also is a talent with the ball coming of 12 paces and bowling with a fair amount of pace to become one of our leading wicket takers. He also is a capable fieldsman.

Noah Griffiths: Noah is a very aggressive and attacking right hand batsmen who liked to go over the top many of occasions, bagging a lot of runs along the way he was our a top scorer with an entertaining 27* I’m sure we will see his name in newsletters in years to come, Noah’s bowling really improved throughout the second half of the year bowling some tidy medium-fast deliveries picking up a number of wicket and becoming our highest wicket taker.

Archer Wackwitz: A very passionate little cricketer who loves his cricket and playing with his mates also a handy right arm leg break bowler who claimed several wickets with his tweaks and improved throughout the year also doing the same with bat in hand finishing with tidy figures, another handy fielder and normally the dirtiest kid after each game.

Rehan Patel: Rehan struggled early on but tried and worked very hard on his bowling and his progression was nothing short of amazing, once he started to back himself the wickets followed, Rehan became a decent right arm off spin bowler claiming more wickets as the year when on. Rehan’s confidence grew with the bat and in the field as well.

10E TEAM

Kurt Rule: Kurt always played with a smile on his face at training or in a game, a classy right hand batsman who im- proved throughout the year another handy medium pace bowler before converting to leg breaks, Kurt is a very clever fielder, also he is very useful behind the stumps.

Josh Wimble: Josh was another player who wore his heart on his sleeve, an all-round cricketer, Josh’s batting was very consistent throughout the year as was his bowling, also useful behind the stumps, Josh could easily make it his position in years to come.

12A TEAM

The Dragons 12As team for this season was a very talented and successful team, with a team full of rep players we were always going to be very competitive in what was a very strong 12 A competition. Unlike other teams in the comp we rotated batting and bowling throughout the year with every player having success with bat and ball at various times in the season.

We were always strong with the bat with all players scoring runs but the improvement in our team came with ball in hand as the boys worked hard on fielding and bowling in good areas to build pressure on our opposition which led to us playing our best cricket in the semi and grand finals to beat Caringbah and Cronulla comfortably making us the champions for the 12As in 2019/20

I would like to thank Michael Snell for all his help as assistant coach, manager and lead scorer for the year as well as an easy going always helpful Parent group.

Tyson Burke: Tyson is a very talented all around sportsman, A beautiful Left Arm inswing bowler with good pace that can be unplayable, he had great success late in the year when he started to bowl full, with the bat he is a clean hitter of the ball who scored some important and entertaining runs throughout the year, especially in the final. His movement in the field especially around the boundary is a pleasure to watch.

Mason Fardell: Sadly this is Masons last year for the Dragons as he and the family are moving back down the coast, Mase has been a pleasure to coach for the last few years, Left Arm inswing bowler with excellent change of pace, technique to bat anywhere in the line up and up the tempo with running between wickets. Great hands in the field. Good luck in the future Mason, I look forward to hearing of your future success.

Tom Faulkner: This is the first year I spent coaching Tom, what a pleasure he is to coach, always put the team first with a smile on his face. When it was his turn to bat, he was awesome to watch. Hits the ball harder than anyone and has worked hard on his technique leading to some very important innings for the team in the semi and Grand Final. Can field anywhere with a strong arm and good hands and chipped in with some vital wickets with the ball.

Cooper Holmes: The youngest player in our team, still eligible for the 10s, Cooper improved with every week we played, after tightening up his defence he flourished with his stroke play, highlighted by his courageous 43 against Bangor after being hit by 1 of the quickest bowlers in the comp. Another naturally gifted athlete who can field anywhere and has a rocket for an arm, he can also be a very effective bowler when he bowls full.

Ryan Lillis: Ryan had a very strong year in both club and rep cricket, His ability to score quickly when needed has always been there but his maturity to bat long innings under pressure when the team really needed it was where he really stood up this year, always batting for the team needs he steered us to some vital wins along the way. His inswing bowling was hard to play as always and his fielding at short cover was pivotal to the team’s success.

Kade Payne: A key part of our team’s success this season, Kade contributed in a lot of ways, bowling the pressure overs in big games with the opposition unable to score off his extra pace and bounce. Excellent hands in gully taking some brilliant catches, but it was Kade’s batting that stood out this year, a good technique combined with powerful drives down the wicket or back over the bowlers head and highlighted by his back to back 50s in the last 2 rounds of the year.

Page - 54 - Engadine Dragons Cricket Club

12A TEAM

Lucas Sheehy: Larry works very hard at his cricket and was rewarded with a successful year, as co- of the team he led the team well setting intelligent fields that built pressure on the opposition. His batting was very consistent combined with understanding the type of innings that was required on any given day and highlighted by his ability to dominate opposition spin bowling, his wicket keeping was very tidy even when standing up to the medium pace bowlers and he even chipped in with a few wickets.

Lachlan Snell: Lachie was a jack of all trades, using his high level cricket knowledge as co-captain to lead the team to success. His batting is beautiful to watch, a combination of aggressive drives and pulls mixed with the defence to keep even the best bowlers out, he bowled leg spin and pace when we needed it and is also a very good wicket keeper as well as being in my opinion the best fielder in the comp and was deservedly the recipient of the team’s fielding award.

Jackson Taylor: Jacks was another of our team Captains this year, he was always talking and encouraging the boys. A wonderful right arm quick with the ability to swing the ball both ways, got great success late in the year when he bowled full on or outside off. Lightening quick in the field contributing some nice catches and important run outs for the team. His lower order batting was a lot of fun to watch including a couple of massive 6s at Anzac Oval.

Kai Laws: We would like to thank Kai from our under 10s team for filling in for a game when we were short, He trained with us all year and didn’t take a backwards step at any point, even though some of the boys were a lot bigger than he was. One of the highlights of the year was his wicket against Gymea and the way the whole team celebrated with him.

12B-1 TEAM

The 2019/20 cricket season brought together a great group of young men to form the 12B(1) Dragons team. Unlike many of the other teams in our competition, the Mighty Dragons 12B1s had a well balanced outfit where every player contributed strongly to our successful campaign. Never is a truer phrase spoken than a champion team will always defeat a team of champions.

Each player should be commended for their sportsmanship, respect, sense of fair play and ultimately their desire to have fun and enjoyment playing cricket with their mates. These values typified the Dragons 12B1.

Our season commenced way back in September where we got off to a strong start by defeating our mates from Dragons 12B(2). This was then eroded by 2 losses followed by 3 wins. Leading up to the midpoint of the competition our confidence was dented with 4 consecutive defeats. With our season on the line, the boys rallied together, dug deep, trained hard and came out the other side with 2 of our most memorable victories in rounds 11 and 13. After a nail-biting loss to St. Pats in round 14, we stormed into the finals on the back of 3 strong wins to finish the minor premiership in third position. Our semi final against Caringbah was probably the stand out performance for the entire season. They way we played on that day was outstanding and memorable and spring boarded the team into the grand final to take on the competition heavy weights and minor premier; St. Pats.

Despite giving our all in the grand final; ultimately we were defeated by a better team on the day. St. Pats. led the competition from start to finish and deserved their premiership. The Dragons team can hold their head up high with the manner in which they conducted themselves and the graciousness with which they accepted the result. It is still an amazing result to finish as the Runner Up in the 12B competition.

The Engadine Dragons 12B(1) squad for the 2019/20 season was as follows:-

Bradford Beencke: 188 runs at an average of 14.46. 8 wickets at an average of 19.63. 3 catches. The first adjective that comes to mind when describing Bradford is POWER. When he came to the crease for his turn to bat, the opposition fieldsmen would immediately retreat to the boundary. Often this was not enough as Bradford would muscle the ball and clear the rope with ease. With the ball, he sent down some deliveries with fearsome pace that defied his 4 step run up. Bradford was always reliable in the field and was our unofficial captain of chirp; keeping the team enthused and entertained with his lively banter.

Kyle Blakeney: 99 runs at an average of 12.38. 10 wickets at an average of 14.60. 4 catches. The spearhead of our bowling attack. Kyle steamed in off the long run and bowled with venom and accuracy. He was an expert wicket taker but also bowled a line and length that restricted the run rate to a trickle. Kyle's batting, particularly in the second half of the season, improved immensely and he was rewarded with an outstanding score of 35 in the last round. Between the wickets he left no runs behind as he scampered through. Similarly in the field, several certain boundaries were run down and he rocketed the ball back into the keeper.

Ethan Driscoll: 142 runs at an average of 15.78. 10 wickets at an average of 11.90. 3 catches and a run out. The "Mr Reliable" of our team. If we needed some vital runs due to a batting collapse - Ethan would get them. If the opposition batsmen were scoring too many; we threw Ethan the ball to sort it. He often turned the match with some inspiring act in the field as well. A mature young man with an eye toward the statistics and history of the game he was amongst the best of our all rounders this season contributing in all facets and regularly.

Page - 57 - Engadine Dragons Cricket Club

12B-1 TEAM

Connor Ganderton: 237 runs at an average of 26.33. 10 wickets at an average of 17.40. 4 catches and 2 run outs. The "Silent Assassin". A man whose actions spoke louder than words. Connor's batting came of age this season. Always someone you could rely upon; in 2019/20 he really opened the shoulders and batted aggressively. Importantly, many of his runs were scored on the off side via some glorious cut shots and cover drives. With the ball his wily medium pace was often too good for even the best opposition batsmen and he rarely gave away any freebies by way of sundries.

Nate Hannah: 117 runs at an average of 10.64. 13 wickets at an average of 14.85. 1 catch and 1 stumping. The Dragons opened up the salary cap and poached Nate and cousin Rory across from arch rivals Caringbah so how sweet it was when we turned in such a performance in the semi final. Nate earned our Bowling Award this season. Not only did he top the wicket taker list he conceded very few sundries and always turned in a strong performance. With the bat, his stats stack up nicely as does his fielding performances, particularly when close to the wicket in the infield.

Jett Jones: 66 runs at an average of 6.60. 8 wickets at an average of 28.63. 4 catches and 2 run outs. An astonishing season for a young man making his debut in competitive cricket. What he gave away in size and experience, Jett more than countered with tenacity and skill. He started the season with a strong base of ability but the way he set his mind to continually improve through practice and training is to be admired. By the end of the season he could stand up in anyone's company and regularly delivered for us, especially in the field, where he was amongst our safest and best performers.

Coby Keillor: 74 runs at an average of 6.17. 10 wickets at an average of 21.80. 4 catches and 1 run out. The fire burns brightly for this guy! If team spirit was a currency, Coby would be a millionaire. He is the deserving recipient of the Coaches Award for his all round performances but more importantly for his positive attitude, commitment at training and support for his mates. When he got going with the bat the runs flourished as he was lightning between the wickets. When he converted from medium pace to spin half way through the season, the wickets started to tumble regularly and he hit his groove.

Rory Mesaglio: 153 runs at an average of 17.00. 5 wickets at an average of 45.20. 6 catches and 1 run out. The other half of the dynamic duo who defected from Caringbah. Rory is at the pointy end of our batting card with good reason. His wristy and deft leg side shots accumulated a significant portion of his runs this season. He also finished the season with an excellent average on the back of 6 innings not out. A young man who has very safe hands and he was rewarded with pouching a few spectacular catches. With ball in hand he sent down some deceptively swift deliveries that yielded bounce very difficult to score from.

Fred Morando: 395 runs at an average of 39.50. 5 wickets at an average of 34.40. 11 catches and 3 run outs. Outstanding statistics for an outstanding cricketer. Not surprisingly, Fred was the worthy recipient of the Batting Award for our team. He exuded class all the way through the season showing power and poise in equal measure and batted with beautiful technique. Fred also starred in the field, most notably when wicket keeping where he snared many fine catches. When he came on to bowl, the 12B "Shiek of Tweak" bamboozled the batsmen with flight and turn.

Tom Powell: 352 runs at an average of 35.20. 11 wickets at an average of 12.64. 9 catches and 2 run outs. It's doubtful that any batsman in the history of under 12's cricket has ever had a higher strike rate than Tom. This guy found the fence, and cleared it with an amazing frequency. Not only a devastating batter, Tom was a super bowler as his stats attest. Moreover his pace and accuracy troubled even the best batters from the opposition. He also delivered one of our season highlights with a freakish catch on our home patch at Kingswood Road in the latter rounds. This was one of several fielding highlights and easily enough to earn our Fielding Award.

Oliver Te Hira: 268 runs at an average of 26.80. 8 wickets at an average of 20.00. 8 catches and 2 run outs. One of our genuine all rounders, Ollie always delivered something special week on week. If he wasn't retiring at 35 not out while batting, he would take a vital wicket or a sensational catch. Some weeks he delivered on each of the above. A young man who also excels behind the stumps with the gloves and always proved to be an essential cog in the Dragons machine.

12B-1 TEAM

The 2019/20 cricket season was one which was truly memorable and rewarding. We brought together a fantastic squad of players who all contributed toward our excellent results. Much of this success can be attributed to coach Nathan who instilled a sense of pride and sportsmanship in the boys while also improving their skills. Special mention to all parents for enthusiastically cheering the team on and always helping out at training and game day. Good luck to all in your chosen winter sport and let's come together again next spring to give the U/14s competition a run for it's money.

12B-2 TEAM

Our team this year was a real mix of experience levels with 5 from last year’s 12D finalists, 3 from last year’s 10A Premiers, and a Dragons Debutant.

And with our first three games against sides that would go on to be the competitions top 4 it was a real eye opener in terms of the speed, power and skills of some of the boys we would come up against.

We started the year 0 from 7, and despite some big losses, we were confident we were a better side than this.

The 12D’s players were starting to find their rhythm, the 10A’s boys were growing in confidence with the new format, and our Dragons Debutant was regularly getting amongst it. Each of the boys were starting to understand their roles in the team, they were learning how to feed off each other, forming partnerships and backing each other up. What’s the saying: A champion team can beat a team of champions?

Well that’s nearly what happened. We had a season changing win in Round 8 against a side (that we won’t name) but we respected a lot and knew well! Our boys looked up to the boys in this side. But we hit our highest score of the season against a great bowling attack, and we held our nerve against power hitting. The boys suddenly had belief that they could do it. And this turned our season around, winning 6 of the 10 games played, and being able to take the game to good sides for the remainder of the year.

So to my favourite ever Engadine Dragons 12-B2 side : super proud of you. You are the best 12-B2 side I have ever had the pleasure of coaching!

I am not the kind of coach that marks a successful year by where we end up on the ladder. We played to win, but I mark our year as awesome, because of this: every team member finished the year a markedly stronger cricketer than they started. You are each able to look back on the year and point to games where your contribution significantly influenced the outcome. You celebrated your teammates successes, you picked yourselves up quickly from disappointing dismissals, you were happy to play whatever role I asked you to . . . and you smiled, and you laughed, and you enjoyed yourselves.

Special mention to Denise Martin for Managing, running the scoring and keeping me in check. And to the parents I appreciate your help, input, support, and providing a great environment for the boys to enjoy themselves. Makes a huge difference.

Acknowledging the players:

Cooper Martin: Two words: raw power. Whether power hitting or express bowling. When Cooper was on, he could turn a game inside of 5 minutes, such was his ability to impact. Winner of the teams “Captain Scary” award for being the most likely to strike fear in the opposition (with bat or ball) Cooper was such a pleasure to coach. Harness that power Cooper and big results are yours.

Jake Whippy: Winner of the teams “silent assassin” award, Jake’s bowling was a standout and a major contributor to the team’s success. He doesn’t make a racket, doesn’t run in off the long run, doesn’t stare the opposition down, but just meanders up to the popping crease, and then SNAP – top of off stump, with surprise pace, surprise lift, and batsmen are walking back to the pavilion not knowing what happened. Extremely reliable, consistent, and with ability to provide important late innings runs as well. Such an important part of our team.

12B-2 TEAM

Jayden Dundas: Wow. Jaydo stepped up this year more than I imagined he could, with a long highlights reel from his milestone batting performances, incredible bowling spells and high energy commitment in fielding (taking the teams “screamer award” for catch of the year”). But what I am most proud of is how Jaydo developed the mental side of his game. He developed a strong ability to read games, and adjust his approach to the situation at hand that belies his youth. He was remarkedly calm and clear of mind even when under pressure, and he grew in the consistency of his results as a consequence. And all this while maintaining great team spirit. Stellar year and #proudas.

Luke Watson: Luke goes on my list of players to watch in the future. Luke’s game development from beginning to end was massive. Luke found his place as a top-order batsman, where his technical strengths and controlled aggression were able to shine. And bowling, mate you gotta watch this guy. While he can bowl pace when you need it, he can rip a leggie a mile!! I am most proud of Luke letting me throw him into pressure situations. Not only was he never fazed, he frequently delivered at key moments with his steely eyed focused . Winner of the team’s “peach award” for the ball of the season – a first ball ripping leg break pitching outside leg and spinning in front of the batsmen to take out the top of off. A pleasure to watch!

Mitch Duric: Mighty Mitch. Another team member that I was able to throw the ball to at critical junctures, and he would deliver – taking some critical match turning wickets for us at key times. But what I am most proud of with Mighty Mitch, is his batting. From where Mitch started the season, it was so wonderful to watch Mitch’s confidence in the last few games. His front foot driving became insanely good, with some incredibly important late season innings, and some incredibly rewarding late season boundaries. He took the team “Finisher” award, because most of our wins were completed either off Mitch’s Bat of Mitch’s bowling!

Owen Anderson: Owen was our Dragons Debutant, and what a cool dude to have in your team! Its never easy starting your career in B grade. You still tend to have a spread of A-grade capable players that are hard to face, or hard to bowl to. But Owen was able to contribute from game 1 (a wicket in his debut over), and as he continued to grow his game, he was able to keep providing key contributions. He nearly took my head off cracking a drive straight just past my left ear for 4 with his new Size “mega-large” Kookaburra, and for that effort, took the teams “Boom / Pow” shot of the year award.

Sam Verrell: Sam is a very talented allrounder. In some ways, Sam’s stats don’t tell the true picture of how important his contributions to the team where. Batting, Sam’s technique got better and better. Can bat in any role, solid in defence, powerful in attack. Just a bit unlucky with some dismissal calls. Bowling, Sam can really swing the ball, and when he found his line, he was brutal – with some very memorable bowling performances. And in the field, Sam was mega. Would play any role, was always on, and became one of our key wicket-keepers. He led the team admirable in “spirited appeals” and won the teams “Howzat” award by a landslide!

Tom Wheatley: Wheats is another whose game grew immensely throughout the year as he adjusted to the 12s playing conditions. His batting confidence grew game on game, and Tom was comfortable adjusting his game to all batting conditions. He was our other key wicketkeeper, solid as behind the stumps, especially against our express bowlers. But its Tom’s left arm finger spinners that are my highlight. With so many games under damp conditions, Tom’s ability, like Luke, to be thrown in the deep end as a spinner, to pitch the ball up and drag out batting errors: Tom was a master. Another very good cricketer with a well-rounded game. Won the teams “Ricky Ponting” award for the run-out of the season.

Travis Moran: Last but not least, my man Travis. Stellar season, with consistently strong performances with the bat, the teams leading wicket taker for the season, and most run-outs (for which he earned the team’s “Down to it” award). A genuine confidence player, Travis is another that had a big say in our results. But what most people wouldn’t know, is Trav is a very good reader of the game and a very smart cricketer. On the field, Trav showed some excellent leadership, game awareness and the traits you would want in the leadership of your team. A pleasure to coach also.

So cheers to a great year. I hope to see you all back at the dragons next year.

12C TEAM

For the U12C team this season has been a big step up from last year. The majority of the team were experiencing their first year in U12’s which included a harder cricket ball, you only get out once, and bigger boundaries and a longer pitch. We also had 3 x newcomers to the great game of cricket and they all excelled with bat, ball and in the field.

We started the year strong with some good wins and some very close games. As the season went on the competition improved and we were in every single game till the end which is a credit to all the team. We saw a large improvement in all players and we also showed how the game should be played in the right spirit.

Kobi: He started the year with the biggest smile on his face and that’s the way he finished. Kobi was a strong bowler who was always challenging batsmen, was electric in the field with some memorable catches, and could hit the ball as hard as anyone in the competition (once he shook the nerves away)

Callum: He had a very interrupted season with injuries but would always turn up even if he wasn’t playing. Callum showed improvement with the bat throughout the season, was a strong fielder with some good runouts, and got the wickets near the end of the season he deserved with the ball.

Alex: He had a very consistent year with bat, ball and field. Alex was always keen to get the pads on and score runs (which he ended with 253 of them), worked on swinging the ball when bowling, and was always keen to practise catching at training to always improve.

Rory: He started the year still learning his craft with bat and ball. As the season went on Rory showed how much he improved with the ball taking some very important wickets for the team. Also with the bat he got the rewards for his hard work at training scoring runs and getting the ball to the boundary on many occasions.

James: He had an all-round good season. James showed he could also bowl swing as well as his leg spin, with the bat he was scoring runs and pushing his batting partners to score more, and with his hard work in the field took a memorable catch in the last game of the season.

Brock: He showed improvement over the season. Brock worked on getting his bowling more consistent and it showed toward the end of the season, his batting had improved also with better shot selection, and was always present in the field.

Ty: He had a very good season all-round. With the bat he worked hard on timing the ball and not just swinging hard (which resulted in 2 x 6’s in the season). With the ball he was consistently at the batsmen and got through his overs quickly, and was quick over the field which saved a lot of runs.

Sam: This was his first year of playing cricket and he improved so much. He was always working hard on his batting with a couple of scores over 20, his bowling was always consistent and picking up wickets constantly, and worked on his fielding skills at training and it showed on the field.

Page - 64 - Engadine Dragons Cricket Club

12C TEAM

Patrick: Watching him over his first season of cricket he showed a love for the game. With his training he worked hard on his batting and it showed on the field. With the ball he was learning to move the ball off the seam, and was always encouraging his team mates on the field.

Lachlan: He was also a first season player and hit the ground running. A left arm faster bowler he was always willing to practise his craft. With his batting he was consistent when he got a start, smashing the ball to the boundary regularly, and was a strong fielder with a rocket arm.

On behalf of Mel and myself we would like to thank the parents for helping out with the scoring, umpiring and at training. We would also like to thank all the boys for their amazing attitude every single week and making sure we played the game hard but very fair. We hope that next season you all come back and continue to work on your skills and enjoy the game of cricket.

Also a huge thank you to Melissa Bryant for her managing and organising of the team. With her help putting scores in every week, getting batting and bowling lists together so every child got a fair go, and bringing her enthusiasm to every game made this year a lot of fun.

12D TEAM

A fun season, with the boys able to grab themselves a few wins, with some of our losses being in very tight games each player steadily improved throughout the season, which was a pleasure to see.

Thanks to Trent Chatterton for managing the team, doing a great job with the off-field duties. Thanks also to Scott Carter for writing our match reports and to all the parents for their efforts on game day.

The most important part of cricket is to have fun and I hope the players and parents enjoyed the season as much as I did.

Steve Chalmers.

Rommy Archer: Mr. Reliable could always be counted on, no matter the situation. Able to hold up an end or go for quick runs. A natural leg-spin bowler, his figures don’t tell the true story as he was simply too good for most batsmen in this grade.

Nate Carter: The most dedicated cricketer I know. He dragged his dad to the nets every non-training or game day and it showed. He steadily improved as the season went on both batting and bowling. He also showed strength and bravery by stopping a pull shot with his head and continuing to play on.

Robert Chalmers: Improved with each game, becoming a reliable bowler by season’s end. Always alert and ready in the field and always encouraging his teammates. He was ‘keeper for the whole innings in a few of our games and is hoping to make it his full-time role in the future.

Matthew Chatterton: First season of cricket and we’re glad he came. His batting and fielding improved with each game, because of his great attitude and dedication to training. Bowling quickly became his specialty and improved rapidly with Matt taking out the bowling award.

Max Clay: Another dependable all-rounder, Max managed to bat through his quota of balls most games. Deadly accurate with the ball, he was always capable of keeping the run rate down and land the ball in whatever zone was required.

Oliver Garlick: Can bat, can bowl, can throw. What more can I say? Scored an undefeated half-century and was easily our highest run-scorer. Pulled off some spectacular catches and has an arm you don’t run on. Constantly watches cricket and tries to copy the techniques of the world's best players.

Ben McDonaugh: A coach’s dream. Always listens at training and the game. Bowled with consistent pace, line and length, he always looked like taking a wicket. Enjoyed bowling with a leather ball this season constantly keeping the run rate down.

Alex Smith: A great listener, Alex is always willing to try new drills and routines to help his improvement in the game. Didn’t score a huge number of runs but just seemed hard to dismiss. His bowling improves each game and I’m sure we’ll continue to work hard to perfect it.

Reuben Spicer: A big improver this season. Hits the deck harder than most bowlers in the grade and when he became more consistent with his length and line, he was hard to play for the opposition batsmen. Can play all the shots and hits the ball with great power.

14A TEAM

With COVID-19 hitting our shores we were very lucky to be able to complete our season.

Right from the outset we struggled to register eleven players for our side even though the Club could easily fill our second and third U14 teams. In recent seasons many players have opted to play lower grades, which gives them more opportunity to bat and bowl than would be possible in A grade. Never the less it came down to us having to do a bit of our own recruiting with only eight players ticking the A grade box on the registration form. With Bosco struggling to fill teams we fortunately got Nathan and thanks to some negotiations by Michelle and Craig we managed to secure the last two players to make a team.

Having a team with a bare eleven players proved challenging and combined with a number of players missing Saturdays due to family commitments and private school sport we rarely could put a full team on the park. Thank you to Bailey Croker from our 14C team who helped out and also Rory who registered for the last two rounds of the season to give us a fighting chance to make the Final.

Season: Putting all that to one side the team performed well enough to make the Final. They had an up and down season on the park winning some matches easily and losing others that they could have won. In a three horse race for the two Final’s positions we fell across the line on quotient thanks to a big round ten win over Gymea Bay.

Final: The 14A Final was a rematch of the 12A Final from two years ago where Seagulls won both the competition rounds, but lost the Final. As luck had it history repeated itself.

Saturday of the Final was one of the worse days you could imagine to play cricket and the ground we were allocated Ridge 3/4 had nowhere to hide from the gale force wind and rain. Both teams agreed to move the match next door to the ridge 1/2 where at least there was protection and shelter from the conditions.

Winning the toss we took the option of batting first. The ground was soft and spongy and from the outset both teams knew that runs were going to be hard to come by. We got off to a less than favourable start losing our first wicket with only a run on the board. Koby was very patient for his 16 forming partnerships with Lachlan and Kobey to push the score to 5/42 before he was dismissed. Macca and Keiren put together a little stand to edge the score along to 7/52 before losing another two quick wickets to be 9/59. We were in big trouble. Enter Nathan and Riley with 11 overs to go. Both boys were determined to see out our 50 overs and give our bowlers something to defend. Their gritty 30 run partnership got the team to the end of our 50 overs finishing on 9/89 with Nathan not out 16 and Riley not out 11. This turned out to be a match winning partnership.

We took lunch, but the rain set in and play was abandoned for the remainder of the day. Sunday morning greeted us with much milder conditions and the advantage of bowling with a dry ball. Early wickets were required and the call was answered by Keiren in his third over 1/3. A run out to Lachlan brought together Seagulls two main bats at 2/23. The team knew if they got these two wickets they were well on the way to victory. With the score on 54 it happened with Tom catching the edge and Kobey taking a great grab at first slip. Three balls later Kobey skittled the stumps and we were into the tail at 4/54. With 6 wickets in hand and 36 required there was still work to be done and Kobey answered the call with another 4 wickets, Lachlan 1 and Keiren another. The match ended with Maeve taking a high catch above her head and Seagulls were all out 74.

This was an excellent bowling and fielding performance with the team leaving their best to last. Great catch to Tom at first slip and a screamer from Keiren. Alex was running to all parts of the ground and was exceptional in saving a number of runs out on the boundary. All the bowlers performed well with Kobey 5/14 off 10, Keiren 2/8 off 7, Lachlan 1/9 off 8 and Tom 1/23 off 10. Both Maeve and Riley bowled very tightly and gave nothing away. Congratulations to Lachlan for his captaincy and the way handled his fielding positions when the pressure was on everybody.

Thank you to Lachlan Snell from our victorious 12A team for fielding for us. You did good!

The match was played in great spirit and Seagulls were most gracious in defeat. At the trophy presentation the umpires commended players from both teams on their conduct and politeness.

Thank you: Thank you to all the parents who assisted on Saturday mornings and to Craig who umpired every week and did all the hard stuff at training that the other coach (crock) couldn’t perform. It was great to have Nick at the training sessions adding some well needed youth to the coaching staff and being able to join in the drills. Thanks to Andrew Ritchie for filling in for us at training when we all went A.W.O.L. Michelle as ever did a fantastic job as team manager organising the various rosters, players, coaches and attending meetings.

Just a few words on each of the players –

The Players:

Lachlan Ritchie: A quality all round player. Captained the team well and led from the front with bat and ball.

Rory Anderson: Only played two matches, but helped us to the Final. Missed a Hattrick by a whisker.

Keiren Creighton: Bowled well all season and gave his best at every training session and in every match.

Riley Edwards: Left his best to last with a 30 run match winning partnership with Nathan in the Final.

Kobey Freer: Put in all the hard work and was rewarded with a great season with both bat and ball.

Mackay Johnson: His batting improved throughout the season and big scores aren’t too far away.

Koby Lillis: Opened the batting as well as keeping all season. A big job that he performed well.

Maeve Martin: Provided two great highlights this season. 5 for 7 verse Como and that catch in the Final.

Hayden McCarthy: Great asset to the team with bat, ball and in the field. Thanks for all the travelling. Dad to.

Thomas Sheehy: Did a hell of a lot bowling for the team this season and deserved many more wickets.

Nathan Steyn: What a character. Great innings in Round No.10 and even better in the Final to help win the match.

Alexander Trenberth: Best outfielder and the biggest arm in the team. Saved a stack of runs in the Final.

I will be coaching U14’s again next season so good luck to all the players that are going up to the U16’s.

14B TEAM

Looking back at the season, I'm sure we can all agree, it was a battle of the elements, both from mother nature and mankind!

If it wasn't extreme heat, mixed with fire, smoke, ash and dust, it was torrential rain, all capped off with a global pandemic, that we just beat to the end of the season!

Fortunately, where there is a will there is a way, and through all the drama we only lost 2 days of cricket!

From last year's 14C team that narrowly lost the Grand Final, we had 8 of the 11 boys return, losing a couple to the older age group and one to Fortnite!

A wrangling of locals keen for a hit meant a late surge in numbers and we started the season with 12 boys, all pumped to go one further than last year, this time in the 14B competition.

All-new editions to the team fitted in seamlessly from the get-go and the coach could sense that, with a bit of hard work, a few of these rocks could be polished into diamonds.

Of course, it takes a whole team of support off the field to make a team on the field, and I reckon the line up we had off the field was second to none.

Coming in at No.1 was our manager Kristyn Dundas. Not only super organised, which came in really handy for the coach whose logistic capabilities have often been questioned by his wife, but truly cared for all the boys. Whether it be weekly treats, offering transport to and from training/games, keeping everyone informed, or thinking ahead to make sure no stone was left unturned on game day, Kris was all over it. Thanks Kris, you're a gem!

Filling spots in the line up from No's 2-6 are all the parents who made sure their child was at training and games on time. It's not easy taxiing our children around these days especially with so much going on other than cricket. Also, the regular support you all showed on a Saturday was much appreciated. It was great getting to know you all, and, you being there from week to week really provided an excellent atmosphere. I hope you enjoyed your Saturday mornings watching your son play and were able to see the 3 hours as a way to chill out, and have a break from working all week! Hey, not to mention the scoring, of which you all excelled at...... except those few games we lost...... who was scoring then?

No.'s 7-10 taken up with the dad's who helped out at training, putting their skills on show and their hamstrings and backs at risk. From memory, we got through the season unscathed. (Kev's broken finger doesn't count as the season was officially over at 12pm on Grand Final day). All that assistance helps.

Finally, coming in at No.11 and Assistant Coach of the team, Darren Chapman. With training times this season not suiting Darren with his work commitments, he always made the effort to be there ASAP. Not only does Darren have excellent knowledge of the game, but he also has a very calming effect on everyone with his style of communication. I know the boys are better off with his presence, as am I. Invaluable!

Prior to the season starting Darren and I spoke about what we were hoping to see from the boys. Of course, there is the want to see them all improve as cricketers and gain confidence through success, but we were hoping to see more than that. We both agreed it was equally important to see all the boys grow as leaders, both on the field and off it. With this in mind, it gave us a real focus for the season.

I think there would be advocates for all sports explaining how their game offers opportunities to think, grow, lead and learn skills for life, but I reckon cricket provides it the most.

Page - 73 - Engadine Dragons Cricket Club

14B TEAM

I may be biased, but...... what other sport challenges your mental strength like cricket. So much time to think about many different things, then focus for that fraction of a second when the ball is bowled, and do it over and over again, whether batting, bowling or in the field. Throw in a 35 degree day to play on your mental fortitude and each week it presents a test. It's a game that is never won, and never lost, and can always be turned around for better or for worse. There is time to think through your options when you're down and to change the momentum of a game or an innings. It promotes patience, not rashness, and time to reflect on decisions while you're still playing.

It's a game for the strong-minded who ignore the heat and their opponent and focus on their job. It's a game for the strategic mind, figuring out what is the best reign to pull at the right time. It's a game of skill and action for those who lead by physical example, but it is a game for the kind-hearted who have time to console a teammate who may be down, or for those whose voice carries an entire oval, in the quiet moments, as they encourage their team. There are so many ways a player can lead before, during and after a game of cricket.

By the season's end I believe each of the boys realised this, and in their own way displayed maturity and growth that showed their true leadership qualities. Hats off to Elijah who captained the team this season. Age-wise, Elijah is one of the younger boys in the team, but his love of detail, strategy and the teamwork that cricket requires enable him to think like a seasoned professional.

I think what was most impressive was his genuine understanding that everyone has talent and the ability to contribute to the team's performance and this was reflected in the rotation of all the bowlers. Well done!

To all the boys in the team, congratulations on a well-deserved premiership. The Grand Final result was an indictment of the team you became. Regardless of that result, you all took great steps forward as cricketers, and, most importantly, bought into the team ethos. Week in week out each of you contributed to the success of the team and this was most pleasing. This was evident with the unwavering acceptance of our 15 over retirement rule for the batsmen that we had in place for the regular season. Without this, there is no way all players get the chance to spend time in the middle on a regular basis, so a big thank you to all the boys and parents for understanding.

A special mention to Noah who was playing his first season of cricket. Though very inexperienced, he listened intently to all instruction and soon developed his bowling action to the point where he became very consistent with his length. It was very satisfying seeing him take out the bowling award for most wickets given he was surrounded by some very talented teammates who were hot on his tail! Well done Noah.

All the boys should be proud of the way they conducted themselves this season both on the field and at training. It was a pleasure to be involved with such a motivated, well behaved, respectful and friendly group. Regardless of how many runs you scored, wickets you took or catches taken, you all improved significantly.

The best part is you've all got so much you can work on which should motivate you to come back next season to keep on improving!

Hope to see you then!

14C TEAM

This season saw a new “band of brothers” come together in the U14C competition. The lads bonded well with each finding their stride as the season unfolded. It was a slow start to the season, but the lads hung in there and notched up a few wins by the Christmas break.

Sneaking under the Covid-19 guns, we managed to complete our season and finish with a win landing us in third place despite the opposition having the biggest slip-cordon I have seen in a while (see below photo).

There was plenty of brilliance, mateship, skill and courage seen across the entire season. In summary, I believe we all walked away at close of the season with a few new skills, forged mateship among our team and, fond memories. A few comments now on each of the lads…Dylan and Bailey both led the side this year as Captain and Vice-Captain respectively. Both performed well with bat and ball stepping up when much-needed runs were required. They both also seemed to get those one or two wickets to stem the opposition run flow. Great work and top leadership lads.

Balin once again had an outstanding season with bat scoring a beautiful half century knock in one innings. Coupled with Will M who struck the ball beautifully as well, both had a superb season with the ball also finishing with nine wickets a piece. Outstanding performances!

Our resident spinners, Lucas (our leggy) and Hayden (our offy) were again, our spin twins both turning the ball a mile bamboozling batsman with majestical flight, drift and rip! Lucas courageously bounced back from a broken arm half way through the season and together with “H”, got a few vital runs at key times when needed. Hayden served the team well behind the stumps this year also grabbing a few “feathers” to boot. Proud of both of you!

Jayden (JD aka “Whisky”) and Jake R (Junior) both were outstanding in all areas. These two were our quite achievers always putting in 120% effort. They both would step up and change the tempo turning the game around just at the right time whether it be changing up the pace or, having a “lash” with the bat when defeat seemed imminent. Great effort.

Patrick (Pattie) and Kyson (Kyso) were my biggest movers this year improving “otta-sight” particularly in the bowling department. Both listened intently at training each week and, on game day, carefully apply techniques learnt from training. Both finished the season strongly. Top marks lads!

Page - 76 - Engadine Dragons Cricket Club

14C TEAM

Jake W (JW), Corey and Will P, were our three key men in the field. These lads fielded unbelievably whether it be taking a “specy” of a catch or, throwing down the stumps for a run out (and there were plenty). They kept the team focused and “on-song” through their superb display of effort and skills. Well done lads. Super stuff lads!

Finally, before closing the season off, thanks so much to the parents and siblings who came along to cheer us on each week and put on the chips and drinks when required. A specific thank you to our manager and, resident scorer Rod Driscoll. A big thanks also to our assistant coach Neil Croker (also serving tirelessly as club secretary might I add).

Most importantly, thanks to the lads. Thanks for listening to your old coach and applying yourselves in each game. It was truly a great season to be part of and I look forward to many more to come.

Hope to see you on the other side of Covid-19 for another dazzling season, till then

16A TEAM

The pinnacle of junior cricket in Sutherland shire is to play in the 16A competition and for several boys this was to be their final year in Junior cricket before they move on to either Senior cricket or grade cricket. This year’s competition was so close, and it was not until the end of the final round before we knew who the finalist would be. With some gritty wins and a few big wins throughout the season the boys managed to earn a spot in the Grand final and not only that they ended up minor premiers, which was an outstanding effort from the team given that we were plagued by injury throughout the season and had a few very tight losses which had we been fortunate enough to win the tight games we would have finished well in front on the competition ladder.

The season started off with a very tight loss to Caringbah by only 13 runs, however it was clearly evident that we had a very strong bowling team and on any given day we would be able to beat anyone if we were able to apply pressure in the field.

This really came to light in round 2 when were able to apply that pressure to convincingly beat Bangor, the side that had been pencilled in to take out the 16A title before the season had started. This was where I could see the boy’s confidence grow and they started to believe in themselves as they went on to win the next few rounds. In the lead up to Christmas we only had 1 more loss which again was to Caringbah by 5 runs. After Christmas we had a wash out and a very close win over Cronulla which put us in the box seat to make a finals appearance and with results going our way we ended up minor premiers based on quotient but never the less we finished on top and the boys should be really proud of themselves. That then left the GF to be played out on Glenn McGrath Oval against our bogey team Caringbah.

Unfortunately, we were completely out classed by a very good cricket team and all credit to Caringbah for taking out the 16A title. While the GF was a game the boys will want to forget they should be very proud of themselves for how they conducted themselves throughout the season always playing the game in the right spirit and always seemed like they were all enjoying getting out there playing with their mates.

As far as individual performances went everyone at some point had outstanding games and the accolades were shared around each and every week, just further evidence that as a team we played very well and did not rely on 1 or 2 players to win games for us.

On behalf of the boys and myself I would like to say a huge thankyou to Doug Ritchie and Mark Lindsay for managing the team. If it wasn’t for these 2 guys making sure we were at the right grounds and chasing up replacement players when we had injuries, then we would have struggled to get the team on the park and for that we thankyou very much. We would also like to say a huge thankyou to all the parents who supported the boy’s week in and out and for everyone who took turns with scoring, without your support we would not have had the kind of season that we did.

16C TEAM

The Engadine Dragons under 16C’s had a successful year. The young men stood tall with lack of numbers, the boys won many games with some great individual performances. Certain players had to stand up with the bat and ball and they did. Unfortunately, due to games not being completed, the grand final did not happen for us this year. We lost one game once we dropped to C grade which was due to having seven players, but still managed a decent score. We found C grade the right grade for our team, which made the year more successful for the players. Zac and Dom bowled outstandingly during the year leading our attack. Jake and Nathan also had an outstanding year with the bat. Caleb was so reliable behind the stumps and a great leader along with Nathan. Thanks to my manager Kim on managing the team and Cam and George for continually helping out with the scoring and training. I hope all the players continue to play cricket as there is some talent there.

Thanks for making it an enjoyable year. Cheers Danny.

Thal: Had a solid year with the bat getting many starts, just couldn’t turn it into a big score. Had an injury midseason which stopped his momentum into what I believe a big score. Fielded well, trained well, and was always there to bowl if needed. Great year for Thal.

Arnev: Had a couple of handy innings throughout the year. Opened on a couple of occasions doing well. Arnev was a good team player handy for a few overs.

Riley: Played a couple of great innings when the team really needed it. Riley was consistent with the bat throughout the year and bowled well when needed. Great year Riley.

Angus: Was a great team player. Unfortunately, he fractured his wrist and missed out on the majority of the season. He played with courage coming back early so we could field a team playing out the season with enthusiasm. Great year for Angus.

Nathan: Opened the batting and came in at first drop and was very effective in getting us off to good starts. Nathan valued his wicket, which made him hard to get out. Nathan was also a good backup bowler to our openers keeping it tight. Great year Nathan.

Caleb: Kept behind the stumps and hardly making a mistake all year. Great keeper, great leader. Caleb was unlucky with the bat, when he made a mistake, he was out and had no luck while others in the team had several chances. Great job caleb.

Jake: Was our opening batsman and led the team from the front. Jake loves to take the bowling on and has one hell of a pull shot. Jake had an outstanding year with the bat and made many big scores. His catching was sharp and bowled well as a first change bowler. Great year Jake,

Zac: Was our opening bowler. He bowled with pace and accuracy. Zac had many wicket hauls throughout the season. I believe Zac became the number one bowler in our competition and many batsmen won’t be missing him. Great year Zac.

Mark: Was a great team player. His fielding, batting and bowling improved during the year. Mark has a positive attitude and he has a handy knack of jagging a wicket. Great year Mark.

Noah: Had a great first season of cricket. While he wasn’t available to play many games he has great potential. Great year Noah

Dominic: Had a great season with the ball, holding our second top bowling stats. He always turned up to play and was happy playing where needed. Great year Dom.

I hope to see you all next year boys!

B2 TEAM

A first for the guys to be playing in a 5 team competition which at times felt a bit stop start.

Barnesy burst out of the gates with a 153 not out in Round 1 but unfortunately went off to early and the rest of the season was a struggle.

Hamish joined the team coming from the 16’s and impressed us all with his skill and technique, the under agers Jarrad and Corey were hampered by work and social commitments but showed their worth when they were able to play.

The start of the season was very friendly with easy wins in rounds 1 & 2 after decent batting performances by Barnsey (153), Hamish (49), Dunco (60) and Marty (57). Round 3 was a depleted Gymea team and Round 4 was an easy win against the bye.

Finally we found some competition with the Bangor Tavern boys who gave it to us in the three rounds we played them. This competition brought out the best in some of the boys who need a bit of fight in a game to stay motivated. The season rolled on with a tough loss to Illawong in Round 6 after they chased down 213, 9 wickets down and edging the winning runs past slips. Hamish continued his form of only being able to score big against Illawong with an impressive 58. Round 7 was a forfeit by St Pats, Round 8 was another easy win chasing 58 against another depleted Gymea team. Round 9 was another bye, Round 10 Bangor Tavern flogged us and Round 11 was canned due to the heat. Just like that it was the Christmas / New Year’s break with us looking pretty safe in second position.

After Christmas we came up against St Pats in Round 12. Stew Lumsden finally took wickets claiming his first 5 fa in years. Dunco made a 50 and Tim made a quick 63 smashing 30 runs off one over. Jarrad Wood had his best bat this round as well making a nice 33. Round 13 saw us making 202 against Gymea with Sammy Haynes making 93 and starting to hit his straps leading into the finals. Another easy win against the bye in Round 14 lead into another big loss against Bangor Tavern in Round 15. Bangor appeared to have one hand on the competition trophy and proved they were going to be tough if we made it through.

We finished the season in second place putting us in the Semi Finals against Illawong played up at Heathcote Oval. Losing the toss and being sent into bat felt like a little win from the get go. A solid partnership by Barnesy (18) and Hamish (43) saw us bat some time frustrating the easily frustrated Illawong team. Sammy Haynes came in and continued that frustration with a handy 38. Late runs by Moreland (14) and Jacko (16) helped us to 167 on a very slow ground put us in a really strong position. Jacko bowled tight picking up 2 wickets and Hydey ripped in taking 4. Andy pulled off one of the better catches you will see, which lifted the boys. A messy game with Illawong manipulating the runner situation but the boys managed to fight hard and get the win. Into the GF against a team we hadn’t beaten all season.

Grand-final day, what every player dreams they could make. Being all out for 85 after 33 overs was not part of that plan. Luckily Sam Haynes made a fighting 23 which gave us something to bowl to. Grand-finals are a funny thing and runs on the board feel bigger than they really are. The plus side of getting rolled so quickly was that it gave Timmy and Jacko some solid overs to build up some pressure throughout the afternoon. Jacko took the prized scalp in the first over and there appeared to be a small glimmer of hope. At stumps we had Bangor Tavern five wickets down, with only 35 runs left to defend it all leant towards a Bangor win. That was until Sammy Haynes threw the stumps down in the first over and totally changed the tempo. Nerves were building into batting team and confidence was growing with the boys. No need for bowling changes, Jacko had total control of his deliveries and Tim kept a tight line down the other end. It all came down to this, one wicket remaining, two runs to get. BOOM - Jacko bowls a pearler knocking out off stump and the unwinnable game was won.
