Relief in the fact our playing season narrowly avoided the current Covid-19 crisis we now find ourselves in and trepidation of what the future holds for our game and the possible changes to it that may result. The season itself was a strong one for our club with 13 junior teams, 4 senior teams plus 9 boys and girls participating in the Saturday morning T20 Blast at Kareela. As a club we are most proud that we still have good participation in this area of the Sutherland Shire through the hard work of our committee and volunteers. Dropping in to a few of the games over the season I was most pleased to see the enjoyment the game of cricket brings to our young players. I do note that there has been an alarming decline in the number of seniors playing in the SSCA competition since 2009/10, maybe even before that. A high percentage of people are unable to commit to the current formats as they did in the past. I hope this resonates with the decision makers in the men’s association and that radical change is implemented to increase participation. On the field we had a very successful season with 7 teams contesting Finals. B2, 14A, 14B, 12A and 10E teams winning their respective competitions and the 16A and 12B-1 teams finishing as runners up. Well done to all. Once again we had strong representation in the various representative teams. 33 in the Sutherland junior representative teams and 13 current and ex Dragon’s played in the Sydney grade competition as well as 7 in the metropolitan cup. A special mention to Andrew Ritchie who made his first grade debut for Sutherland during the season. Also of note were ex Dragons players Nic Amos (Sutherland first grade), Ben Dwarshuis (Sutherland first grade and Sydney Sixers) and Brad Simpson (Australian U19’s). A club cannot function without its volunteers. Thank you to our secretary Neil Croker who contributes an unbelievable amount of time for the club. Also thank you to Brad Moreland, Col Berry, Adam Pascoe, Doug & Michelle Ritchie, Denise Martin, Kristyn Dundas, Tim Russel, Chris Moreland, Ian Latham and the many others that contributed throughout this season. Thank you also to all the parents who put their hands up to coach, manage, grade, select and help out with their respective teams. The game does not function without your input. A special thanks to our many sponsors. Your support provides so much for our club. Thank you to our 4 Gold Sponsors GENERATION LEGAL, PLUS FITNESS ENGADINE, CLUB ENGADINE & ENGADINE BOWLING CLUB. As the vast majority of our sponsors are local business please do your best to support them especially during this difficult time. We have just received the good news that our application for a NSW government local sports grant has been successful for the refurbishment of our Anzac practice nets. This upgrade to our facilities will provide greater training opportunities for all of our players. Well done to those players finishing their junior careers. Good luck with those moving on to senior cricket whether that is playing local men’s cricket, Shires or Grade Cricket. I’m sure you will have fond memories of your time in juniors with the Dragons. In closing let me once again thank everyone for their contributions to another successful season. All the club news and events are available via our website engadinedragonscc.org.au and Facebook page. The Club looks forward to seeing you again next season. Jim Lee President Page - 8 - Engadine Dragons Cricket Club OUR GOLD SPONSORS PLUS FITNESS ENGADINE Page - 9 - Engadine Dragons Cricket Club SECRETARY REPORT The 2019/20 season will go down as one of the most interesting seasons in the Clubs History with games being cancelled due to the smoke haze that covered Sydney in December, torrential rain in February and then just as we concluded our season COVID19 struck resulting in our Presentations being cancelled. On the field we had another successful season with our 14A, 14B, 12A and 10E’s all winning their respective grades – the most premiership wins this season by any club in the SSJCA. Commiserations to our 16A and 12B1 teams who lost their finals however put in a tremendous effort throughout the season. Our B2 Team won a very tight final against the competition favourites. We entered our first full Master Blaster Team and a joint U12 Girls team with Bosco in the SSJCA inaugural U12 Girls competition. On the 6th September, just prior to the start of the season the club received the devastating news that Harry Robins had passed away. For those people that did not know Harry, the club would not be what it is today without his efforts over 50 years, below are his list of achievements, Service to the Engadine Dragons Cricket Club – Secretary for 7 seasons. (1973/74, 74/75, 76/77, 77/78, 81/82, 82/83, 83/84) Treasurer for 1 season. (1966/67) Property Officer for 14 seasons. (1964/65 to 1977/78) Wrote articles for the local newspaper for 32 seasons commencing 1964/65. Newsletter Editor for the first 5 seasons of publication commencing 1964/65. Coaching junior teams for 23 seasons. (11 Premierships and 6 Runners Up) Club coach for 5 seasons.
